We describe the isolation and characterization of Rickettsia monacensis sp. nov. (type strain, IrR/Munich(T)) from an Ixodes ricinus tick collected in a city park, the English Garden in Munich, Germany. Rickettsiae were propagated in vitro with Ixodes scapularis cell line ISE6. BLAST analysis of the 16S rRNA, the citrate synthase, and the partial 190-kDa rickettsial outer membrane protein A (rOmpA) gene sequences demonstrated that the isolate was a spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsia closely related to several yet-to-be-cultivated rickettsiae associated with I. ricinus. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and myasthenia gravis (MG) are category I indications for therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). We previously characterized two cDNAs that encode for distinct preprosomatostatin molecules containing [Tyr(7), Gly(10)]-somatostatin-14 at their C-termini (PPSS II' and PPSS II") and found that these cDNAs were differentially expressed in the endocrine pancreas (Brockmann body) of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. In this study, we examined the control of PPSSII' mRNA and PPSS II" mRNA expression by glucose. Fish injected with glucose displayed elevated plasma levels of glucose in association with nearly three-fold higher levels of PPSS II mRNAs compared to saline-injected control animals.

Urolithiasis is uncommon in adolescence and rare in early childhood. In pediatric populations, congenital urinary tract anomalies associated with stasis and infection, idiopathic urolithiasis (adolescents), and nephrocalcinosis (premature infants) account for the majority of urolithiasis patients. Inborn errors of metabolism, such as the primary hyperoxalurias, are rare causes of urolithiasis in childhood. We report six children (mean age at symptom onset 1.3 years; range 0.32-4.1 years) with moderate hyperoxaluria (mean 1.10 +/- 0.58 mmoL/1.73m2 per day; range 0.69-2.19 mmoL/1.73m2 per day).
