BACKGROUND: Constipation is a common symptom among people with neurodegenerative diseases (PWND), with prevalence ranging from 25.2% to 70%. This is linked to cognitive decline, poor quality of life (QOL), and reduced survival. Although various non-pharmacological interventions exist, their methods and effects are inconsistent, highlighting the need to map current evidence.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to systematically map evidence on non-pharmacological interventions in PWND, identify gaps, and provide recommendations for future research.
METHODS: A bibliographic search of PubMed,

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) and frailty frequently co-occur and may interact bidirectionally through shared mechanisms of aging biology, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammation, and reduced physiological reserve. Objective: We aimed to synthesize current evidence on prevalence, directionality, clinical overlap, adverse outcomes, and management implications of the PD-frailty nexus. Methods: A narrative review of epidemiologic, cohort, and interventional studies was performed, examining frailty in PD and PD risk in prefrail/frail populations, plus trials of multimodal interventions. Managing delivery of complex multidrug infusions in anesthesia and critical care presents a significant clinical challenge. Current practices relying on manual control of infusion pumps often result in unpredictable drug delivery profiles and dosing errors-key issues highlighted by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). To address these issues, we introduce the SMART (synchronized-pump management algorithms for reliable therapies) framework, a novel approach that leverages low Reynolds number drug transport physics and machine learning to accurately manage multidrug infusions in

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment (CI) is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the diagnosis and prediction of CI progression in PD remain challenging. We aimed to explore a multi-omics framework based on machine learning integrating comprehensive radiomics, cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, and genetics information to identify CI progression in early PD.
METHODS: Patients were first diagnosed with PD without CI at baseline. According to whether CI progressed within 5 years, patients were divided into two groups: PD without CI and PD with CI. Radiomics signatures we

Aerobic exercise (AE) has been shown to offer significant benefits for Alzheimer's disease (AD), potentially influencing the gut microbiota. However, the impact of changes in intestinal flora in early Alzheimer's disease induced by aerobic exercise on metabolic pathways and metabolites is not well understood. In this study, 3-month-old APP/PS1 and C57BL/6 mice were divided into two groups each: a control group (ADC for APP/PS1 and WTC for C57BL/6) and an aerobic exercise group (ADE for APP/PS1 and WTE for C57BL/6). The exercise groups underwent a 20-week aerobic training program on a motorized

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing prevalence of cardiovascular metabolic diseases (CMD) in adults aged ≥ 45 years, and vision impairment (VI) is highly prevalent in this population. The objective of this study was to explore the critical determinants of VI in individuals affected by CMD and to develop risk prediction models. METHODS: We analyzed data collected in 2011 (n = 1,926) and 2015 (n = 3,033) within the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Risk factors were selected using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression followed by multivari

BACKGROUND: Nutrition can have a profound impact on chronic disease outcomes, but without periodic assessment of treatment fidelity, one cannot know whether the outcomes are due to an effective intervention or other unknown factors. Repeated measurement of fidelity of all treatments and across all interventionists will ensure the likelihood that treatment differences are maintained for the duration of the trial. This paper summarizes our efforts to assess treatment fidelity throughout the ongoing Phase III dietary intervention trial known as Nutrition effects on Brain Outcomes and Recovery in

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) are chronically underdiagnosed in the U.S., particularly among minoritized racial and ethnic groups. Primary care providers are at the forefront of diagnosis given the increasing prevalence of cases and shortage of dementia specialists. Advances in policy, detection, and treatment in the past decade necessitate an updated review of the current state of determinants of ADRD diagnosis in U.S. primary care settings.
METHODS: Following Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, we conducted a scoping literature review on ADRD diagnosis among o

A substantial portion of waking life consists of mental experiences that arise involuntarily, including mind-wandering, spontaneous thought and rumination. Given that these experiences are fundamental to cognitive function and mental health, there has been growing scientific and clinical interest in using measures of brain activity to model and predict the momentary occurrence of these various forms of involuntary thought. In the most common machine learning approach in neuroimaging and electrophysiology research, model training data include neural features derived from a population of individ

BACKGROUND: Self-control is essential for individual health and well-being. The relationship between mindfulness and self-control has recently become a central focus of research. However, the dynamics of this relationship in deaf and hearing individuals remain underexplored. This study, based on the Cognitive Behavioral Theory, developed a moderated mediation model to examine the mediating role of inner peace and the moderating role of group type in the mindfulness-self-control relationship.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey design, this study used a sample of 121 deaf and 142 hearing c

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental Illness (SMI) bear an excessive burden of periodontal disease, which can exacerbate their mental and physical multimorbidity. Therefore, improving and sustaining good oral hygiene is key.
AIMS: To co-create a theory-driven oral hygiene intervention for people with SMI.
METHOD: A two-stage, eight-step method was followed drawing on the Behaviour Change Wheel. Stage 1, understanding the problem, involved evidence review and stakeholder consultations. Stage 2 focused on identifying theoretical barriers and facilitators through semi-structured interviews (n

Effective interventions to promote language competence, cognitive abilities and integrate these skills into daily activities for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often involve providing guidance and training through specific tasks, typically delivered by speech and language therapists through directive interactions. However, engaging children with ASD in such activities is not straightforward and often fraught with challenges. Yet we know very little about how practitioners cope when the interaction breaks down, for example, due to misunderstandings or failures to engage. This stud

This study investigates patients' goal-oriented experiences in the context of home dialysis for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim is to understand how the home care context can be designed to support chronic patients in achieving their goals. Drawing on goal-oriented experience theory, we explore how patients' motivations, desired outcomes, and lived experiences shape their perceptions of home health care. To do so, we employed a co-design-based qualitative methodology, including postal kits, photo diaries, ethnographic observations, in-depth interviews, and participatory workshops with 22

Background/Objectives: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols aim to improve clinical outcomes, shorten hospital length of stay (LOS), and reduce costs through a multidisciplinary perioperative approach. Although introduced in colorectal surgery, they are less established in cardiac surgery, especially in combination with on-table extubation (OTE). This study evaluates the impact of a novel ERAS concept with OTE (RERACS) in elective aortic-valve-replacement and coronary bypass surgery. Methods: In a monocentric study, we compared a prospective RERACS-group (n = 114) to a retrospectiv

Perioperative skills-based interventions may support non-pharmacological management of pain and opioid reduction after surgery. Such interventions may target and enhance predictors for surgical recovery and possibly reduce chronic postsurgical pain. Existing meta-analyses are limited by inclusion of studies that are either non-surgical or with outcomes occurring only in the hours after surgery. Lacking is a scoping review of studies testing perioperative skills-based interventions for postsurgical pain relief and opioid reduction in the days and months after surgery. We reviewed the efficacy o
