We experienced a case of carcinomatous meningitis originating from stage IIIc ovarian cancer complicated by syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH). Epilepsy is a brain dysfunction characterised by unpredictable occurrence of seizures. There are various causes and presentations of epilepsy but in many cases no definite cause is found. In the present work an effort has been made to search different causes and presentations of epilepsy in West Bengal. Incidence, morbidity and mortality of bacterial meningitis in developing countries are manifold greater than those in the industrialized world. We reviewed retrospectively children with meningitis treated in the paediatric hospital of Luanda in 2004. Among the 555 children, median age 11.0 months, the leading agents were Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), pneumococcus, and meningococcus in 60%, 24%, and 10%, respectively. To retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of zonisamide as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of refractory juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. We retrospectively reviewed the records of seven patients with refractory juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, commenced on a compassionate-use basis on zonisamide as adjunctive treatment between October 2001 and September 2004. We report a 41-year-old man with meningoencephalitis associated with herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The patient developed fever, headache and dysuria followed by generalized convulsion and neck stiffness, and the CSF showed pleocytosis. The titers of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay against HSV measured 6 days after onset showed a significant rise; IgG antibody 4.89 (<0.2) and IgM antibody 1.45 (<0.8) in CSF, IgG antibody 46.1 (<2.0) and IgM antibody 1.76 (<0.8) in the serum.
