Mothers' attributions following their child's diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder: exploring links with maternal levels of stress, depression and expectations about their child's future.

Although the impact of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) on the family is well recognized, the way mothers attempt to make sense of the diagnosis is largely unexplored. However, in other disabilities, attributions have been shown to predict a variety of outcomes including maternal wellbeing and engagement in treatment. Using Weiner's (1985) three-dimensional model, 16 mothers were interviewed to examine the nature and impact of their beliefs about their child's ASD using semi-structured interviews and measures of depression, parenting stress and expectations for their child's future. The findin

Observations of early triadic family interactions: boundary disturbances in the family predict symptoms of depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in middle childhood.

This article argues for the importance of focusing explicitly on the construct of boundary disturbances in families to understand the development of depressive, anxious, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in middle childhood. Grounded in family systems theory, this study examined traditional parent-child antecedents of childhood depression and anxiety (hostile, controlling, and disengaged interactions) in the context of the entire family as well as enmeshed patterns, whereby one parent drew in the child by turning to the child for caregiving or intimacy and excluded t

[Neurotic disturbances, depression and anxiety disorders in the population living in the vicinity of overhead high-voltage transmission line 400 kV. Epidemiological pilot study].

Numerous reports suggest a relationship between the increased incidence of depressive and neurotic symptoms in humans and the exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) at the place of residence. Our study was conducted in one of the Cracow suburbs with low socio-economic status, adjacent to an easement containing two 400 kV high-voltage transmission lines (distance up to 50 m from the line). The population investigated comprised 70 persons (35 males and 35 females). This group was exposed to EMF from 1986. A control group (n = 37), non-exposed to EMF, was also tested. The

Predicting Relapse of Depressive Episodes During Maintenance Treatment: The Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression (CAN-BIND) Wellness Monitoring in Major Depressive Disorder Study: Prédire la rechute d'épisodes dépressifs pendant le traitement d'entretien : Une étude de suivi du bien-être dans les troubles dépressifs majeurs du Réseau canadien d'intégration des biomarqueurs pour la dépression (CAN-BIND).

BackgroundRelapse rates in major depressive disorder (MDD) remain high even after treatment to remission. Identifying predictors of relapse is, therefore, crucial for improving maintenance strategies and preventing future episodes. Remote data collection and sensing technologies may allow for more comprehensive and longitudinal assessment of potential predictors.MethodsThe Canadian Biomarker Integration Network in Depression Wellness Monitoring for MDD (CBN-WELL) study was a prospective, multicentre observational study with an aim to identify biomarkers associated with relapse in patients on m…

Head-to-Head Comparison of Sedation and Somnolence Among 37 Antipsychotics in Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Major Depression, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Delirium, and Repurposed in COVID-19, Infectious Diseases, and Oncology From the FAERS, 2004-2020.

Objective: Antipsychotic compounds are known to induce sedation somnolence and have expanded clinical indications beyond schizophrenia to regulatory approval in bipolar disorder, treatment-resistant depression, and is being repurposed in infectious diseases and oncology. However, the medical sciences literature lacks a comprehensive association between sedation and somnolence among a wide-range of antipsychotic compounds. The objective of this study is to assess the disproportionality of sedation and somnolence among thirty-seven typical and atypical antipsychotics. Materials and Methods: Pati

Procognitive Effects of Adjunctive D-Cycloserine to Intermittent Theta-Burst Stimulation in Major Depressive Disorder: Effets procognitifs de la D-cyclosérine en traitement complémentaire par la stimulation thêta-burst intermittente dans le trouble dépressif caractérisé.

OBJECTIVE: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with cognitive impairments that persist despite successful treatment. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a noninvasive treatment for MDD that is associated with small procognitive effects on working memory and executive function. We hypothesized that pairing stimulation with N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor agonism would enhance the effects of stimulation and its procognitive effects. METHOD: The effect of NMDA receptor agonism (D-cycloserine, 100 mg) on cognitive performance was tested in two randomized double-blind placebo-contr…

A New frontier in assessing functional and cognitive impediments in psychiatric disorders and avenues for mitigation and treatment: a special issue about rumination, cognitive performance, and depressive symptoms.

In this introduction to this special issue, we describe how rumination (habitual, negative, perseverative thought processes) plays a critical role in the experience of depression and anxiety, the cognitive decrements common to these disorders, and daily functioning. We argue that the traditional concept of depression as a functional disorder is limiting, given what is now known about brain processes underlying depression, in addition to the impact of psychological mechanisms like rumination on cognitive functioning. We go on to summarize the seven original empirical studies that compose this s

Milnacipran continuation during pregnancy in a patient with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and psychotic depression: a case report with 3-year pediatric follow-up.

Evidence on milnacipran exposure during pregnancy is sparse, complicating treatment decisions when maternal stability depends on this antidepressant. We report a 31-year-old primigravida with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and a severe major depressive episode with psychotic features in the context of a chronic, difficult-to-treat psychiatric course marked by self-harm, dissociation, and recurrent suicidal behavior. Milnacipran 150 mg/day led to marked clinical improvement before pregnancy. After pregnancy confirmation, treatment was changed to sertraline plus quetiapine because of limi

Interdisciplinary, Delphi-driven consensus guidelines on the use of intravenous ketamine infusions for depressive disorders from the American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners (ASKP3).

BACKGROUND: Off-label use of intravenous ketamine (IVK) for depression is a widespread practice with limited regulation in the United States. There is an urgent need for current, evidence-informed treatment guidelines to facilitate patient safety, clinical decision-making, and care quality in real-world contexts. METHODS: The American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists and Practitioners (ASKP3) convened an interdisciplinary working committee tasked with creating guidelines for use of IVK for depression in outpatient settings. Guideline development followed a two-stage process: 1

Efficacy and safety of home-based transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on patients with depressive disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Depressive disorders, including major depressive disorder, impair functioning and affect 280 million people globally. Traditional treatments are not fully effective. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) offers a noninvasive alternative. Home-based tDCS shows promise for treating depression, requiring systematic review to assess its reliability and efficacy. Six digital databases (Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane, PsycINFO, and CINAHL Complete) were searched for English-language records from inception to November 2024. Inclusion criteria involved randomized controlled trials (…
