Clinical usefulness of needle muscle biopsy in twenty-four patients with proximal weakness.

Muscle biopsy is an important tool in the evaluation of muscle disease. This was performed on twenty-four patients using the percutaneous needle method. Useful findings were obtained in all twenty-four patients. The method is safe, convenient and reliable and should be considered as a practical alternative to open muscle biopsy.

Recently characterised autoantibodies and their clinical significance.

Multisystem autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS), scleroderma and polymyositis are characterised by the presence of antinuclear antibodies (ANAs). Immunoblotting and cDNA cloning studies reveal that the autoantigens of the multisystem autoimmune diseases are important proteins involved in nucleic acid metabolism, including tRNA charging, intron splicing, DNA uncoiling, and RNA polymerase co-factors. Each specific syndrome associates with a restricted variety of ANAs, e.g. anti-La with primary SS, anti-Sm with SLE, anti-synthetase enzym

Non-Specific Interstitial Pneumonia in Anti-Jo1 Synthetase Syndrome With Probable Gougerot Syndrome: A Case Report.

Anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) is a rare autoimmune disorder of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy spectrum, characterized by the presence of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase antibodies, most commonly anti-Jo-1. Clinically presents with interstitial lung disease (ILD), myositis, and arthritis, and may be confused with other autoimmune conditions such as polymyositis (PM), dermatomyositis (DM), and Sjögren's syndrome. We present a 41-year-old French-Moroccan woman with progressive dyspnea, dry cough, weight loss, and diffuse myalgia. Extensive autoimmune and laboratory investigations revealed positive a…

Muscle mitochondrial changes in antisynthetase syndrome and other idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

Mitochondria are critical for cellular function. Their dysfunction contributes to cell degeneration and death, leading to disease progression. This study examined mitochondrial changes in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) including antisynthetase syndrome (ASyS), dermatomyositis (DM), and inclusion body myositis (IBM). Skeletal muscle biopsies were analyzed using histology, histochemistry, and electron microscopy from patients diagnosed with IIMs, according to the clinico-sero-morphological classification. There was no significant age difference between 16 ASyS and 16 DM patients, but …

Musculoskeletal Diseases: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Advances.

Musculoskeletal diseases encompass a broad spectrum of inflammatory, degenerative, and neoplastic disorders that compromise bone and joint function across the lifespan. Increasing evidence highlights the central role of immune regulation in their pathogenesis, driven by complex interactions among immune, bone, and stromal cells. Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and dermatomyositis are marked by persistent immune activation and progressive tissue destruction. Degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and intervertebral disc degeneratio…

Sit to stand and timed up and go in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies can significantly impair physical function, of which Sit to Stand (STS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) are qui … nthly over 6 months. A total of 120 patients (75% female, 81% White, mean age 55.5 ± 13.4 years,52% Dermatomyositis, 39% Polymyositis, 9% Necrotizing Myopathy) participated. There was strong test-retest reliability between baseline and month one for STS (r = 0.80) and TUG (r = 0.87); p < 0.01. At baseline, STS and TUG showed a very strong correlation with each ot …
