Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne disease caused by R. rickettsii in North and South America. Domestic dogs are susceptible to infection and canine RMSF can be fatal without appropriate treatment. Although clinical signs of R. rickettsii infection in dogs have been described, published reports usually include descriptions of either advanced clinical cases or experimental infections caused by needle-inoculation of cultured pathogen rather than by tick bite. The natural progression of a tick-borne R. rickettsii infection has not been studied in sufficient detail. Here, we provi

The pathogenicity of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains is, in large part, due to shiga toxin (Stx) genes (Stx1 and Stx2) and/or intimin (eae) gene. The purpose of this study was to analyze the role of domestic canaries (Serinus canaria domestica) as a reservoir of Stx and intimin producing strains of E. coli. For this study, a total of 50 cloacal swabs were collected from 50 healthy domestic canaries. Cloacal swabs were cultured and tested using standard methods of microbiology. After primary identification of E. coli, DNA was extracted and polymerase chain reaction was perform

Feral pigs (Sus scrofa) survive in many climates, reproduce year-round, and are dietary generalists. In the United States, the size and range of the feral pig population has expanded, resulting in greater interaction with humans and domestic swine and increased potential for disease transmission. We conducted a serosurvey in feral pigs from eastern North Carolina to determine exposure to the zoonotic parasites, Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp. Between September 2007 and March 2009, blood serum was collected from 83 feral pigs harvested at Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center, Four

Naturally occurring cystic fibrosis (CF)-causing mutations in the CFTR gene have not been identified in any nonhuman animal species. Since domestic dogs are known to develop medical conditions associated with atypical CF in humans (e.g., bronchiectasis and pancreatitis), we hypothesized that dogs with these disorders likely have a higher expression rate of CFTR mutations than the at-large population. Temporal temperature-gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) was used to screen canine CFTR in 400 animals: 203 dogs diagnosed with pancreatitis, 23 dogs diagnosed with bronchiectasis, and 174 dogs ad

Fecal samples were taken from 132 (103 wild and 29 domestic) aquatic birds on selected areas in Hungary from February 2008 to March 2008. Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts were purified from the samples and were viewed via fluorescent antibody staining. Molecular detection tools, such as PCR-sequencing and Loop mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) were used in order to determine the Cryptosporidium species and Giardia duodenalis assemblages present. All together 6 (5.8%) and 6 (5.8%) samples out of the 103 wild bird samples and 4 (13%) and 7 (24%) samples out of the 29 domestic bir

UNLABELLED: Cambodians experienced genocide from 1975 to 1979 and ensuing civil war until 1993.
PURPOSE: Are Khmer with a history of trauma who present to a general medical clinic with unexplained physical symptoms more likely than the general population to harbor psychiatric symptoms?
METHODS: Subjects were drawn from a Phnom Penh clinic and the surrounding neighborhood. All subjects completed the Stressful Life Events Screening Questionnaire (SLESQ) and the PRIMEMD. Clinic patients with unexplained physical complaints were compared with neighborhood nonpatients. All individuals reporting t

Amblyomma triguttatum triguttatum is assumed to be endemic to south-western Western Australia (including Barrow Island), Queensland (excluding Cape York Peninsula), and New South Wales, south to Dubbo and Barham. The species has been recorded on a range of mammalian hosts including macropods and domestic animals. In Queensland, A. triguttatum triguttatum is implicated in the epidemiology of Q fever. In 2000, the species was detected on southern Yorke Peninsula in South Australia. We aimed to identify A. triguttatum triguttatum's hosts through trapping, sampling of carcasses, and opportunistic

Computed tomography (CT) of the nasolacrimal drainage system with and without contrast medium (barium sulfate) was used to create an anatomic basis for clinical evaluation in domestic cats. To evaluate and compare the anatomical findings, three casts were carried out and were followed by CT examinations. These CT series were also used for a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the nasolacrimal drainage system within surrounding structures. In noncontrast CT images, osseous structures limiting the nasolacrimal drainage system are easily recognizable. In most cats, this allows the identifica

Vitrification is frequently referred to as a novel technology of cryopreservation in embryology, although some young embryologists were born after its first successful application. Unfortunately, in spite of the accumulated evidence regarding its enormous potential value, most domestic animal and human laboratories use exclusively the traditional slow-rate freezing with its compromised efficiency and inconsistency. The purpose of this paper is to clarify terms and conditions, to summarize arguments supporting or disapproving the use of vitrification, and to outline its role among assisted repr

Lymphatic filariasis has been targeted by the World Health Organization for elimination by the year 2020. Malayan filariasis, caused by Brugia malayi, is endemic in southern Thailand where domestic cats serve as a major reservoir host. However, in nature, domestic cats also carry B. pahangi infection. In addition to chemotherapy and vector control, control in reservoir hosts is necessary to achieve the elimination of the disease. Therefore, differentiation between B. malayi and B. pahangi in the cat reservoir will help the lymphatic control program to monitor and evaluate the real disease situ

Triatoma nitida was found in 14 (0.4%) out of 3,726 houses located in six departments across Guatemala, which were surveyed from 1994 to 1998 by the man-hour collection method. Compared to previous information, the distribution of T. nitida in Guatemala has increased from five to nine departments; the species is present in mild climates at altitudes from 960 to 1,500 m. Fourteen percent of the intradomestic T. nitida were infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. The species was often found in conjunction with other triatomines (T. dimidiata and Rhodnius prolixus). The objective of this review is to summarize the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for perturbations of endocrine function and development of structural lesions that result in important diseases in domestic and laboratory animals. For each major category, several specific disease problems have been selected to illustrate the functional and morphologic lesions that are characteristic for either a naturally occurring endocrinopathy or endocrine disturbances induced by the administration of large doses of xenobiotic chemicals. The major pathogenic mechanisms responsible for disruption of endocrin

In a study of 770 patients with allergic rhinitis, anamnestic data were collected by means of a questionnaire. 484 (63%) of the patients were women and 286 (37%) men. 45.5% of the patients had perennial symptoms, 33.5% had seasonal symptoms only, and 21% had predominantly seasonal but also some perennial symptoms. More than 50% of the patients belonged to the age group 21-40 years. The seasonal group included significantly more young patients than the perennial group. More than 50% of the parents and about 45% of the siblings had some atopic disorder. About 20% of the rhinitis patients had a c

The DDT house-spraying programme carried out throughout Greece between 1946 and 1950 proved highly effective against both the local malaria-vectors (Anopheles sacharovi and A. superpictus) and other domestic pests. However, during 1947 the housefly (Musca domestica) began to reappear in large numbers, and in subsequent years the development of a similar resistance to DDT was noticed among other domestic pests, such as Culex molestus, fleas, bed-bugs, and cockroaches. In 1951, signs of a weakening of DDT efficacy against the local malaria-vector A. sacharovi were noted for the first time.A seri

INTRODUCTION: Tribal women play a vital role in their communities, often managing both economic and domestic responsibilities. Despite the growing feminization of agriculture in India, women continue to face multifaceted challenges in accessing and controlling resources, exercising agency, and technological advancements, which collectively impede their empowerment and the achievement of SDG 5. These constraints are more pronounced among Oraon tribal women, who experience compounded disadvantages due to historical marginalization.
OBJECTIVE: This study identifies key challenges and formulates

BackgroundHome-based end-of-life palliative care presents unique ethical challenges that differ fundamentally from those in institutional settings. Healthcare professionals navigate the complex role of being both clinical experts and guests in patients' domestic environments, operating in a context where professional authority is continuously negotiated rather than institutionally established.Research aimThis study examines the ethical tensions healthcare professionals encounter in home-based end-of-life palliative care and explores the strategies they employ to balance and negotiate competing

BACKGROUND: Thailand has invested in domestic influenza vaccine manufacturing to strengthen health security, yet real-world evidence on the effectiveness of locally produced vaccines is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a domestically produced trivalent inactivated split-virion influenza vaccine (GPO Tri Fluvac) against medically attended outpatient laboratory-confirmed influenza infection following its introduction into the population.
METHODS: We conducted a phase IV test-negative case-control study among adults (≥18 years) presenting with influenza-like illness (IL

Rabies is a zoonotic disease known to humankind for millennia. Despite being preventable, rabies is still neglected and causes human fatalities, predominantly in resource-limited areas in Africa and Asia. In South Africa, rabies is maintained in both domestic and wildlife reservoir hosts, with frequent cross-species transmission. This study utilized retrospective epidemiological data from the Eastern Cape (EC) province of South Africa from November 2020 until December 2024, which included a prominent dog rabies outbreak. The majority of the rabies cases were reported in the Nelson Mandela Bay

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious multi-host pathogen that poses a significant threat to both domestic and wild carnivore populations. The increasing overlap between wildlife habitats, peri-urban environments, and domestic animal populations has raised concerns regarding the epidemiological role of wild canids in maintaining and disseminating CDV. This study investigated the occurrence of CDV infection among free-ranging wild canids from western Romania. Brain tissue samples collected from 64 free-ranging wild canids, including 38 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and 26 golden jacka
