An 83-year-old male with advanced oropharyngeal carcinoma was treated with combined radiotherapy and a daily low dose of cis-platinum with excellent results. In the early part of the treatment, radiotherapy was delivered in fractions of 1.8 Gy/day (5 days/week) to a cumulative dose of 20 Gy, concomitantly with UFT (400 mg/day po), but the response was not adequate. Chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the antibody-mediated destruction of platelets. To maintain the platelets above the symptomatic level we administered 100 micrograms of anti-D for 5 consecutive days to 19 children with ITP. Four patients did not respond to the treatment. We evaluated the feasibility of six courses of chemotherapy in 34 consecutive patients with localised squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus. All 32 evaluable patients first received at least two courses of chemotherapy. There were 18 patients with resectable carcinomas who underwent surgery and 14 patients with unresectable carcinomas who received definitive chemoradiotherapy. Hydroxyurea is one of several cytostatic agents that increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF) production in some patients with sickle-cell disease, although their mechanisms of action remain to be defined. We have studied the effects of hydroxyurea in several hospitalized patients with sickle-cell disease treated for 3 months, who were then maintained on outpatient therapy.
