Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are severe and costly complications of diabetes, often resulting in disability and significant health challenges. These infections place a substantial burden on both individuals and society. The increasing incidence of infections, coupled with the rising resistance to antibacterial drugs, has further complicated treatment strategies. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 484 hospitalized DFI patients at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from 2020 to 2024. Pathogens and their resistance profiles were identified through wound cultur

This study presents the first comprehensive molecular characterization of Escherichia coli producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL-Ec) in surface waters in Albania, focusing on the Shkumbini river. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquatic ecosystems poses a significant threat to public health, yet data from Albania remain scarce. Thirty water samples were collected from six locations near Elbasan between September 2022 and February 2024. Following the WHO Tricycle protocol, 52 ESBL-Ec isolates were recovered and characterized for antimicrobial susceptibility, biofilm formation, resi

Tumor multidrug resistance (MDR) remains a major cause of chemotherapy failure. Inhibiting the P-glycoprotein (P-gp)-mediated excessive efflux of chemotherapeutic drugs represent an effective strategy to overcome MDR. Conventional P-gp inhibitors are limited in clinical use due to systemic toxicity and risks of normal tissue dysfunction. In this study, we constructed a self-assembled system based on H6, the α-hederagenin derivative with potent MDR reversal activity, and the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin (DOX). Guided by the CREKA peptide, this system specifically targets fibronectin in tu

UNLABELLED: Salmonella enterica serotype Dublin is a major concern for livestock, particularly due to its high morbidity and mortality rates in cattle herds. In Brazil, limited research has explored the epidemiology of this serovar, including outbreak characterization, antimicrobial susceptibility profiles, and genetic similarity of isolates. This study aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiological features of confirmed S. Dublin outbreaks across multiple Brazilian cattle herds, as well as to assess antimicrobial resistance profiles, identify resistance genes, and evaluate genetic similar

Rationale: Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is an extraordinarily aggressive form of thyroid cancer, frequently presenting with locally advanced infiltration or distant metastases at the time of initial diagnosis, thus missing the optimal window for surgical intervention. Consequently, systemic chemotherapy and targeted therapies are vital for improving the prognosis of ATC. However, ATC exhibits significant resistance to conventional treatments, highlighting the need to elucidate the biological mechanisms underlying this drug resistance and identify novel therapeutic targets to overcome it.

Colistin is a last-resort treatment for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, particularly in critically ill patients. Nevertheless, it remains a major threat to public health. We assessed the proportion of colistin-resistant Gram-negative isolates from intensive care unit (ICU) infections in different years, areas, pathogens, and antimicrobial susceptibility tests (AST). We searched the studies in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science (until November 2021). Statistical analyses were conducted using STATA software (ver. 14.0). The overall rate of colistin resistance was

Escherichia coli is a Gram-negative bacterium that is ubiquitous in animals and humans, with some strains capable of causing disease. The aim of this study was to perform a comparative genomic analysis of 2732 generic E. coli isolates that were recovered from poultry samples collected from six regions in Canada as part of the National Microbiological Baseline study in Broiler Chicken. Isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing and a subset (1122/2732) were tested for phenotypic resistance to 15 antimicrobials. These E. coli isolates were highly diverse, representing 376 serotypes, 236

Multidrug resistance efflux pumps are among the primary contributors to chemotherapy failure. Therefore, the identification of novel inhibitors with greater specificity and efficacy remains a critical objective. Here the effects of harmane, harmine, and norharman were investigated on the activity of P-gp and MRP1 transporters in the EPG85.257RDB and A2780 cell lines. The lipophilicity of these compounds and their potential interactions with the transporters were assessed via molecular docking. Cytotoxicity, changes in the IC50 of daunorubicin, and efflux pump activity were evaluated using MTT

Cancer treatment is challenged by the emergence of multidrug resistance (MDR). MDR is often caused by the overexpression of certain ABC transporters, such as P-glycoprotein (P-gp, ABCB1) in the plasma membrane of tumor cells and tumor stem cells. Inhibition of ABC transporter-mediated efflux of anticancer drugs might be a plausible approach to overcome MDR. Here, we studied the interaction of 16 tetrahydroquinoline/4,5-dihydroisoxazole derivatives (A1 - D4) with human P-gp to identify and characterize new P-gp inhibitors. We found that compounds C1 and D1 inhibited the P-gp-mediated efflux of

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a human pathogen of global concern. The more recently described pathogen, K. quasipneumoniae, shares similar morphological characteristics with K. pneumoniae and is commonly misidentified as this species using conventional laboratory techniques. This study investigates the molecular characteristics of four phenotype-identified K. pneumoniae isolates obtained from hospital wastewater in Jakarta, Indonesia. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and the Average Nucleotide Identity (ANI) showed that these isolates were eventually identified as K. quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumo

Among doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP)-eligible men, Staphylococcus aureus tetracycline nonsusceptibility is more prevalent than in the overall population and is associated with resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and clindamycin. Doxy-PEP may select for multidrug-resistant S aureus, underscoring the importance of surveillance.

Salmonella Typhimurium is a significant foodborne pathogen and a leading cause of gastroenteritis in humans and animals. Among its various lineages, the DT104 strain is particularly notable for its high level of antimicrobial resistance, making it a significant global concern. Here, we used whole-genome sequencing to investigate the antimicrobial resistance and virulence-associated genomic features of clinical S. Typhimurium DT104, and we compared them to non-DT104 strains recovered from southern Tunisia between 2000 and 2013. Among 88 S. Typhimurium isolates, 39.8 % were definitive type DT104
