Intratemporal course of the facial nerve: morphological, topographic and morphometric features.

The purpose of this study is to present some morphological and morphometric aspects of the facial nerve and especially of the tympanic and mastoid segments of this nerve. The authors follow up a mesoscopic study concerning the tract (length, angulation, width) of these segments and the anatomic relations with the important structures of the middle ear. At the same time, some anatomical variations which involve the canal of the facial nerve (dehiscences, tract deviation or other anatomical deviations) are presented. To evaluate the risk of the facial nerve injury during operations for chronic o

The immunohistochemical aspects of protein Mena in cervical lesions.

UNLABELLED: The proteins Ena/VASP (Enabled/Vasodilator-Stimulated Phosphoprotein) family is involved in the regulation of actin cytoskeleton which activity is very important for physiological tissue formation but is sometimes implied in pathological processes. In this study, we analyzed the immunohistochemical expression of Mammalian Ena (Mena), which is a member of this family, in the cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and also in the cervical squamous cell carcinomas. We analyzed 30 cases with CIN (1, 2 and 3), and 10 squamous carcinomas. We used the EnVision system by LabVision. The M

Ultrastructural modifications at the level of marginal periodontium in the case of incorrect dental reconstruction.

Our study focused on the evolution of the marginal periodontium inflammatory process caused by an incorrect dental reconstruction. Our research studied a control group and a group of patients having traumatic and inflammatory lesions in different stages of evolution. A pronounced rarefaction of the junction desmosome structures as well as an inflammatory process pointed out by the presence of macrophages, neutrophils, Langerhans' cells, and mastocytes. The presence of altered fibroblasts and collagen fibers in the electron microscopic sections of vascular lesions represents microscopic signs o

Evaluation of dental and maxillary development in patients with cleft lip alveolus.

Our purpose was to determine in 20 unilateral cleft lip and alveolus subjects characteristics of the maxillary permanent teeth and maxillary arch development. Clinical and radiographic examinations have been carried out to identify congenitally missing teeth and sagittal skeletal patterns. Study cast assessment was undertaken to evaluate mesiodistal widths of individual teeth, intercanine and intermolar distances for the maxillary arch, as well as dental relationships. We observed that the congenital absence of the upper incisors was higher on the cleft side than on the non-cleft side. There w

Histopathological changes in acute ischemic stroke.

We study here the histopathological changes in twenty-two cases of acute ischemic stroke. The average age of the patients was 62-year-old, and the interval from the onset of the disease to the death varied from 6 hours to 15 years. The brain lesions after acute stroke were observed in all regions. Their evolution allowed us to classify them in fourth stages. Phase one changes (1-2 days after onset) (n=2 patients) included red hypoxic and "ghost" neurons and other acute neuronal injury and spongiosis. The second phase (n=14 patients) was subdivided into: (a) a phase of acute inflammation (3-37

Solitary angiokeratoma of the tonsillar pillar of the oral cavity.

Solitary angiokeratoma has rarely been described in oral mucosa, mainly in the tongue, where the main concern is either aesthetical or due to bleeding problems. We present a case of solitary angiokeratoma of the tonsillar pillar in a 68-year-old man. Histologically, the morphology was typical of angiokeratoma. It showed an immunohistochemical pattern in consonance with a blood vessel origin, with expression of CD31, CD34, and von Willebrand factor. The lesion did not express D2-40. No other malformation or metabolic disorder was found in the patient. The lesion was surgically removed and due t

Amyloid beta: a putative intra-spinal microtubule-depolymerizer to induce synapse-loss or dentritic spine shortening in Alzheimer's disease.

A loss or shortening of dendritic spines has been described in patients with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. Recently, there have been four reports of capture of the plus-ends of microtubules in the dendritic spines. One report, based on acute hippocampal slices that were fixed by a microtubule preserving process after LTP-inducing stimulation, showed that microtubules of the dendritic shaft ramified into spines in a manner that was specific to the stimulated postsynaptic membranes. This resulted in enlarged protrusi

Past experience of SUUB's Pathology Department in classic based cervico-vaginal cytology.

The importance of screening to detect early lesions that may soon turn into cervical carcinoma is well known. The Romanian contribution to the diagnosis of these lesions dates back over a century ago and is due to A. Babes (1926 and later in the standardization of the Papanikolaou 1928). The experience of the Cytology Compartment of the University Emergency Hospital in Bucharest increased permanently regarding smears made conventionally and those in liquid medium. We believe that this experience should be statistically analyzed and compared with the histological results, especially for the cas

Tuberous sclerosis complex: report of two intrafamilial cases, both in mother and daughter.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a multisystem syndrome characterized by neurological symptoms and tumors in multiple organs including kidney, brain, skin, eyes, heart and lung. Kidney and brain are the two most frequently affected organs in TSC. TSC is an autosomal disorder with extensive clinical variability. We described TSC in a family at a mother and her daughter. We emphasized the importance of Computed Tomography in the discovery of some asymptomatic organic involvement as bilateral renal angiolipoma in the mother.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of larynx with giant cell: case report and histological-clinical considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is a tumor which has a mesenchymal origin, and an uncertain histogenesis. MFH with giant cell accounts for 3-15% of all malignant fibrous histiocytomas. OBJECTIVE: To explore the histopathology, the diagnosis and the treatment of MFH with giant cell of larynx. PATIENT AND METHODS: We report a case of a glottic MFH at a 59-year-old male, who has been smoking for 30 years, and was hospitalized in June 2008 at Emergency County Hospital of Craiova. RESULTS: The largely-sized tumor was originated in glottic area, upper a left vocal cord, with no

Utero-adnexal damage in septic abortion. Histopathological study on 91 cases.

Septic abortion represents the main causes of abortion-induced maternal death. Hysterectomy may represent a beneficial therapeutic solution for septic abortion, nevertheless with irreversible effects on a woman's reproductive condition. The study analyzes the anatomopathological damage found in ninety-one patients hospitalized for septic abortion. The patients were admitted to the "Dr. D. Popescu" Clinical Hospital, Timisoara, between 1980-1989 and 1999-2008; hysterectomy was performed in all the cases to eliminate uterine sepsis responsible for the emerging complications.

Congenital patellar syndrome.

Congenital patellar syndrome is bilateral isolated absence of patella. Congenital patellar aplasia or hypoplasia associated with genetic disorders belongs to a clinically diverse and genetically heterogeneous group of lower limb malformations. Absence of patella as an isolated anomaly is extremely rare and we discuss such a case in a 9-year-old boy.

Detection of coronary artery anomalies and coronary aneurysms by multislice computed tomography coronary angiography.

We report some variants, anomalies and aneurysms of the coronary artery tree observed in patients referred to our radiology department for suspected or known coronary artery diseases. 265 patients, with heart rate < 70 beats per minute and stable clinical conditions, underwent 64-MSCT. They were intravenously given contrast medium followed by saline as a chaser. Images and data were reconstructed and evaluated by two radiologists. Seven out of these patients (5 males and two females) were found to have abnormalities (variants or anomalies) of coronary arteries or coronary aneurysms, with an in

The demonstration of the inferior sternal cleft using three-dimensional reconstruction: a case report.

Congenital sternal cleft is a rare disorder in which there is a gap in the midline of the anterior chest wall between the two halves of the sternum. Typically, the contour of the mediastinal structures can be seen beneath the skin. It is rare and the exact incidence is not known. It results from failure of fusion of the two lateral mesodermal sternal bars by 8 weeks of gestation. Most cases are diagnosed shortly after birth and are reported only rarely in adults. We report here one of the congenital major chest wall deformities; inferior sternal cleft is rarely seen, associated with sternal an

Risk factors related to omphalocele and gastroschisis.

Omphalocele and gastroschisis are recognized as congenital malformations with a high mortality. Only 60% of children with such malformations survive until the end of the first year of age. It has been suggested that omphalocele and gastroschisis are associated with other congenital malformations, concerning the bones, the heart and the kidney. The aim of the present study is to determine the risk factors in 12 omphalocele and four gastroschisis cases diagnosed and surveyed in the last four years (November 2003-November 2007) at the Emergency County Hospital of Constanta. In 10 of the 16 cases

Variations in the superficial palmar arch of the hand.

Variations in the pattern of the hand blood supply are frequently encountered. Awareness and identification of such variations is crucial during hand surgery. Thirty formaline fixed hands of male and female cadavers were dissected. All arteries contributing to the superficial palmar arch (SPA) of the hand were verified. In addition to the frequently encountered types of SPA, three very rare cases were described. In the first case, the superficial branch of the radial artery passed superficial to the thenar muscles with a diameter larger than that of the ulnar artery. In addition to the common

Unusual coexistence of a variant abductor digiti minimi and reversed palmaris longus and their possible relation to median and ulnar nerves entrapment at the wrist.

During routine anatomical dissection of the left upper limb of a 73-year-old female cadaver, a unique coexistence of variant muscles was found. In the forearm region, a largely developed reversed palmaris longus was discovered. Its short distal tendon was in close relation to the median nerve. In the neighboring hypothenar region, an unusual abductor digiti minimi was also observed. Its muscular body was composed of two portions - medial and lateral one, arising from the reversed palmaris longus tendon. The lateral portion passed over the ulnar nerve and artery in the canal of Guyon. In the li

Differential diagnosis between chronic granulocytic leukemia, polycythaemia vera and essential thrombocythemia using micro-and ultrastructural measurement data performed at the level of megakaryocyte.

The common features of chronic myeloproliferative disorders (CMDs) make the differential diagnosis on clinical or paraclinical basis to become more difficult, and validate the requirements for new methods of detailed diagnosis. Besides the cytogenetic methods, the megakaryocyte (MK) morphology is a valuable element of diagnosis included in the recent "en vogue" criteria. The purpose of this paper is to compare different morphological parameters in MKs from patients diagnosed with three CMDs and to establish a differential diagnosis of these disorders. Studies were performed on smears of bone m

Spitz nevus with an uncertain malignant potential.

We present the case of 10-year-old girl who have had from birth a plane tumor, of tan color, 3-4 mm of diameter, localized on the face on the cutaneous part of the superior lip. This tumor has been stabile until 8-year-old. Then, after repeated sunlight exposures, the lesion has become more stark, hemispheric in shape, has increased in size becoming about 5-6 mm, with irregular borders, and after an accidental traumatism it began to bleed. We have performed the electroexcision of the lesion for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. The histopathologic exam distinguished typical images of Spitz n
