BACKGROUND: Müller-Weiss disease (MWD) is a complex pathology of the foot. Accompanied by navicular sclerosis, deformity, and osseous collapse, it leads to the destruction of the talonavicular (TN) joint. This review builds on and updates previous publications on Müller-Weiss disease, and compared with earlier systematic reviews the current study provides a systematic and PRISMA-based synthesis dedicated specifically to treatment outcomes and algorithms, including all available studies up to 2024. The aim of this systematic review was to answer the following questions: (1) what is the outcome

The change in axial tibial rotation after uniplane medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (uniplane OWHTO) and its relevant influence factor is not known. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the change in axial tibial rotation after uniplane OWHTO, and the factors affecting tibia rotational change were analyzed. Between January 2022 and April 2022, the study was retrospectively conducted on genu varum patients who underwent uniplane OWHTO. In the weight-bearing anteroposterior long leg view, the hip-knee-ankle angle and medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA) were evaluated. The post

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of hallux valgus deformity associated with mild or moderate osteoarthritis (OA) is still a topic of debate. In the literature, there are few studies concerning the management of patients affected by this condition. This study aims to report the experience at mid- to long-term results of an original joint-preserving surgical technique.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients affected by mild to moderate hallux valgus deformity and associated to grade 1-2 OA and treated with modified Simple-Effective-Rapid-Inexpensive (SERI) technique from 2008 to 2018 were selected. Inclusion c

The choice of treatment of hallux valgus deformity is influenced by angles measured on radiographs. Angles of interest are the hallux valgus angle (HVA), 1,2-intermetatarsal angle (IMA), and distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA), as well as the presence of first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) subluxation. Guidelines for measuring those angles have been distributed by American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), although the influence of weightbearing on these angles and its clinical relevance is not clear. We conducted a study to determine the influence of weightbearing and the in

BACKGROUND: There appears to be a general lack of consensus in treating calcaneus fractures. Many different patient-based variables such as smoking, diabetes, or occupation, may influence treatment decisions possibly more so than the nature of the injury itself. Indications for operative versus nonoperative treatment are often unclear. The goals of this study were to determine if lack of consensus exists, determine which factors most influence orthopaedic surgeons in choosing operative versus nonoperative treatment and determine if there are differences in treatment based on fellowship trainin

BACKGROUND: Tibialis posterior muscle weakness has been documented in subjects with Stage II posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) but the effect of weakness on foot structure remains unclear. The association between strength and flatfoot kinematics may guide treatment such as the use of strengthening programs targeting the tibialis posterior muscle.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty Stage II PTTD subjects (age; 58.1 +/- 10.5 years, BMI 30.6 +/- 5.4) and 15 matched controls (age; 56.5 +/- 7.7 years, BMI 30.6 +/- 3.6) volunteered for this study. Deep Posterior Compartment strength was measure

BACKGROUND/RATIONALE: Congenital vertical talus is a fixed dorsal dislocation of the talonavicular joint and fixed equinus contracture of the hindfoot, causing a rigid deformity recognizable at birth. The etiology and epidemiology of this condition are largely unknown, but some evidence suggests it relates to aberrations of skeletal muscle. Identifying the tissue abnormalities and genetic causes responsible for vertical talus has the potential to lead to improved treatment and preventive strategies.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore (1) determined whether skeletal muscle abnormalities are pres

BACKGROUND: Nicolaides-Baraitser syndrome (NCBRS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by pathogenic sequence variants in SMARCA2 which encodes the catalytic component of the chromatin remodeling BAF complex. Pathogenic variants in genes that encode epigenetic regulators have been associated with genome-wide changes in DNA methylation (DNAm) in affected individuals termed DNAm signatures.
METHODS: Genome-wide DNAm was assessed in whole-blood samples from the individuals with pathogenic SMARCA2 variants and NCBRS diagnosis (n = 8) compared to neurotypical controls (n = 23) using the Illumin

BACKGROUND: To report on the functional, biomechanical, and radiographic results of patients who had undergone arthroereisis plus tensioning of the posterior tibial tendon for flexible flatfoot. The hypothesis is that arthroereisis associated to a tensioning of the posterior tibial tendon give a good correction with great satisfaction in patients with flexible flatfoot in grade IIA.
METHODS: We evaluated 29 patients (31 feet), mean age of 46.4 years, who had been surgically treated for adult flatfoot grade IIA according to Myerson. Mean follow-up was 34.15 months. For clinical evaluation, the

BACKGROUND: Podiatric medical abnormalities are highly prevalent, yet few random population studies exist that determine the presence of pathologic abnormalities in the feet, despite their importance. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of podiatric medical abnormalities in a random sample population 40 years or older.
METHODS: An observational study was conducted of a random sample population (n = 1,002) located in A Coruña, Spain. Anthropometric variables, comorbidity (Charlson score), quality of life (36-item Short-Form Health Survey), and podiatric medical examination fi

The various available surgical methods for correcting congenital overlapping fifth toe deformity consistently require a skin plasty step, which can result in complications (necrosis, tight scar, unbecoming appearance). Here, we describe a percutaneous technique involving extensor tenotomy combined with release of the dorso-medial capsule and ligaments. No skin plasty is required. Percutaneous osteotomy of the first phalanx can be performed if needed. From 2006 to 2010, we used this technique in 16 patients (27 toes) with a mean age of 12.6years (range, 6-17years). Mean follow-up at last evalua

Lower back pain (LBP) is a widespread, expensive, and debilitating problem in Western industrialized countries. Though LBP can be caused by acute injuries, biomechanical discrepancies have also been indicated to cause chronic LBP. A possible link between podiatrical deviations and LBP has been established in the literature; yet, no comprehensive review investigating the effects of foot and ankle deviations on low back pain has been published. The aim of this study was to assess the relevant literature concerning the effects of foot and ankle deviations on LBP. After review, it was determined t

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical results of distal chevron osteotomy performed in conjunction with selective lateral soft tissue release. The criterion for doing a lateral soft tissue release was assessed by determining the ease and completeness of passive hallux valgus correction at the time of surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between August 2005 and November 2007, 48 feet in 43 patients classified as having mild to moderate hallux valgus were retrospectively studied. Distal chevron osteotomy without lateral soft tissue release was performed in 26 cases (Grou

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is the most common endocrinologic complication during pregnancy, and poor control can lead to a variety of congenital anomalies in the fetus. However, it is often difficult to differentiate between diabetes-related anomalies and an underlying genetic syndrome. In the 1990s it was proposed that preaxial hallucal polydactyly, particularly when proximally placed, was a distinguishing feature of diabetic embryopathy.
METHODS: We summarize the clinical findings in 18 patients (five previously reported in abstract form) with diabetic embryopathy and preaxial hallucal polydactyl

Pancreatic agenesis is a rare cause of neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM). It can be associated with malformations of the heart, the biliary tract, and the cerebellum. We report an infant with NDM because of pancreatic agenesis, intra-uterine growth retardation, dysmorphic features, and recurrent bacterial infections. He was born to healthy consanguineous parents. With adequate replacement of insulin and pancreatic enzymes, his blood glucose levels were controlled and his weight slowly increased. However, he continued to develop recurrent serious bacterial infections and died at the age of 11 mo

The purpose of this study is to introduce and describe a newly developed index using foot pressure analysis to quantify the degree of equinus gait in children with cerebral palsy before and after injection with botulinum toxin. Data were captured preinjection and 12 weeks postinjection. Ten children aged 2(1/2) to 6(1/2) years took part (5 boys and 5 girls). Three of them had a diagnosis of spastic diplegia and 7 of congenital hemiplegia. In total, 13 limbs were analyzed. After orientation and segmentation of raw pedobarographic data, we determined a dynamic foot pressure index graded 0 to 100

Proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD) is a rare congenital anomaly of the femur. Rotationplasty has been described as a reconstructive procedure in the management of PFFD. A 68-year-old woman with PFFD of the right leg and rotationplasty at the age of 12 years had prosthetic fitting problems after a fall. The authors describe the analysis of the prosthetic fitting problems and the considerations made in prosthetic management. Following a fall, 56 years after rotationplasty, this woman has a good prosthetic fitting and a satisfying level of functioning.
