Semantic memory in partial epilepsy: verbal and non-verbal deficits and neuroanatomical relationships.

Semantic memory was evaluated in 124 epilepsy patients, including 84 with left (n=44) or right temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (n=40) and 40 with left (n=25) or right frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) (n=15), in order to determine their verbal and visual deficits, and the neuroanatomical relationships between them. The controls were 35 healthy subjects. Semantic memory was assessed by means of Picture Naming, Picture Pointing, the verbal Pyramid and Palm Trees Test (PPTT), the visual PPTT, Object Decision Hard, and Drawing From Memory. Episodic memory was assessed by means of the Short Story, Rey's Com…

Hybrid PET/fMRI reveals interactive effects of T2DM and MCI on cerebral glucose metabolism and ALFF.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is frequently associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), significantly impacting patient health, quality of life, and healthcare systems. However, the precise cerebral metabolic and functional alterations resulting from the interaction between T2DM and MCI remain incompletely understood. METHODS: Fifty-four participants were categorized into four groups based on T2DM and MCI status. Hybrid positron emission tomography/functional magnetic resonance imaging (PET/fMRI) was used to assess cerebral glucose metabolism and the amplitude of low-freque

Nonlinear responses within the medial prefrontal cortex reveal when specific implicit information influences economic decision making.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The authors used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate how individual economic decisions are influenced by implicit memory contributions. METHODS: Twenty-two participants were asked to make binary decisions between different brands of sensorily nearly undistinguishable consumer goods. Changes of brain activity comparing decisions in the presence or absence of a specific target brand were detected by fMRI. RESULTS: Only when the tar get brand was the participant's favorite one did the authors find reduced activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal,

Reference frames for spatial cognition: different brain areas are involved in viewer-, object-, and landmark-centered judgments about object location.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare the neural correlates of three different types of spatial coding, which are implicated in crucial cognitive functions of our everyday life, such as visuomotor coordination and orientation in topographical space. By manipulating the requested spatial reference during a task of relative distance estimation, we directly compared viewer-centered, object-centered, and landmark-centered spatial coding of the same realistic 3-D information. Common activation was found in bilateral parietal, occipital, and right frontal premotor regions. The re

Automatic atlas-based volume estimation of human brain regions from MR images.

OBJECTIVE: MRI offers many opportunities for noninvasive in vivo measurement of structure-function relationships in the human brain. Although automated methods are now available for whole-brain measurements, an efficient and valid automatic method for volume estimation of subregions such as the frontal or temporal lobes is still needed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We adapted the Talairach atlas to the study of brain subregions. We supplemented the atlas with additional boxes to include the cerebellum. We assigned all the boxes to 1 of 12 regions of interest (ROIs) (frontal, parietal, temporal, and

Brain Metabolism Monitoring through CCO Measurements Using All-Fiber-Integrated Super-Continuum Source.

For monitoring of concussion, brain function, organ condition and other medical applications, what is needed is a non-invasive method of mon … tion task, interleaved with 60-s periods of resting baseline. It has been well established that the frontal lobe of the human brain is active during tasks of attention. We therefore predicted that attention task should elicit an increase in HbO concentration accompanied by a decrease in redox state of CCO (e.g., ratio of oxidized CCO to reduced CCO) in frontal …

Automated Talairach atlas-based parcellation and measurement of cerebral lobes in children.

This study applied a Talairach-based automated parcellation method, originally proposed for adults, to the measurement of lobar brain regions in pediatric study groups. Manual measures of lobar brain regions in a sample of 15 healthy boys, girls and adults were used initially to revise the original Talairach-based grid to increase its applicability to pediatric brains. The applicability of the revised Talairach grid was then tested on an independent sample of five girls with Rett syndrome. As Tables 3 and 4 in the text demonstrate, sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive values either

MRI of the normal brain from early childhood to middle age. II. Age dependence of signal intensity changes on T2-weighted images.

We examined 66 healthy volunteers aged 4 to 50 years by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the signal intensity was measured on T2-weighted images in numerous sites and correlated with age and sex. Using distilled water and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) as references on each slice, we calculated the signal intensities of the brain structures. Calculated ratios between structures did not change with age, except for those of the globus pallidus and thalamus, in which the signal intensities decreased more rapidly. The signal intensities of other brain structures changed equally but this could not b

Midfrontal oscillatory alterations during gait imagination and observation in Parkinson's disease with freezing of gait.

Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), linked to impaired motor automaticity and cognitive control. Cognitive strategies like motor imagery (gait imagination, GI) and action observation (gait observation, GO) are used in rehabilitation, but their neural mechanisms are not well understood. This study used EEG to examine midfrontal oscillations during GI and GO in healthy controls (HC, n = 21), PD without FOG (PDFOG-, n = 16), and PD with FOG (PDFOG+, n = 34), with resting-state EEG (eyes-closed and eyes-open) as baseline. During GI, both PD groups showe

Oscillatory Correlates of Habituation: EEG Evidence of Sustained Frontal Theta Activity to Food Cues.

Understanding how the brain adapts to repeated food-related cues provides insight into attentional and motivational mechanisms that influence eating behaviour. Previous studies using event-related potentials (ERPs) have shown that food cues, particularly high-calorie stimuli, elicit sustained neural responses with repeated exposure. The present study extends this line of inquiry by examining the oscillatory dynamics of within-session habituation using time-frequency analysis of electroencephalographic (EEG) data from 24 healthy adult participants. Repeated presentations of the same high-calori

Effects of swLORETA Z-score neurofeedback in Z-coherence of the fronto-limbic circuit in patients with major depressive disorder.

Patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibit abnormal hypercoherence within the fronto-limbic circuit (FLC), involving core brain regions such as the ventrolateral, ventromedial, dorsolateral, dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (vlPFC, vmPFC, dlPFC, dmPFC), and the amygdala (AMY). This study examined the effects of standardized weighted low-resolution electromagnetic tomography Z-score neurofeedback (swLZNFB) on LFC coherence and emotional symptoms. Sixty-one MDD patients were assigned to either the swLZNFB or control groups. All participants completed the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI

Multimodal EEG-fNIRS classification as a clinical tool for bipolar disorder diagnosis.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex mood disorder characterized by recurrent depressive and manic/hypomanic episodes, accompanied by significant cognitive dysfunction and emotional dysregulation. Accurate and timely diagnosis, especially the differentiation between subtypes, remains a challenge due to overlapping symptoms, variable onset times for more specific symptoms (e.g., psychotic features), and the reliance on subjective assessments. This study examines the use of a multimodal approach combining electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to identify pa

Breathing Modulates Network Activity in Frontal Brain Regions during Anxiety.

Anxiety elicits various physiological responses, including changes in the respiratory rate and neuronal activity within specific brain regions such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Previous research suggests that the olfactory bulb (OB) modulates the mPFC through respiration-coupled oscillations (RCOs), which have been linked to fear-related freezing behavior. Nevertheless, the impact of breathing on frontal brain networks during other negative emotional responses, such as anxiety-related states characterized by higher breathing rates, remains unclear. To address this, we subjected rats

Trait characteristics of midfrontal theta connectivity as a neurocognitive measure of cognitive control and its relation to general cognitive abilities.

Understanding the neurocognitive basis of cognitive control and its relationship with general cognitive ability is a key challenge in individual differences research. This study investigates midfrontal theta connectivity as a neurocognitive marker for individual differences in cognitive control. Using electroencephalography, we examined midfrontal global theta connectivity across three distinct cognitive control tasks in 148 participants. Our findings reveal that midfrontal theta connectivity can be modeled as a trait-like latent variable, indicating its consistency across tasks and stability

Traveling waves link human visual and frontal cortex during working memory-guided behavior.

Traveling waves guide the spatial propagation of neural activity and computational processes across the brain. Traveling waves could contribute to the control of memory-guided behaviors by flexibly organizing the timing and direction of interactions between brain regions responsible for storing memory content with those responsible for producing task-relevant behaviors. Using short-term memory as a test case, we report evidence supporting this possibility. Analyses of human EEG data revealed forward- and backward-propagating traveling waves linking visual and motor brain areas around the time

Frontal Theta Modulation in Sequential Working Memory: the Impact of Spatial Regularity and Scenario.

Humans can quickly extract spatial regularities from sequences to reduce working memory (WM) load, yet the electrophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. Although previous studies have underscored the role of frontal-midline theta (FM-theta) in sequential WM processing, whether and how spatial regularity modulates FM-theta is unknown. To investigate this, we varied the spatial relation between successive items-more repetitions of the same displacement yielded fewer unique chunks and thus higher regularity-while sequence length stayed fixed. Participants were asked to encode, maintain and repr

Working memory readout varies with frontal theta rhythms.

Increasing evidence suggests that attention varies rhythmically, phase locked to ongoing cortical oscillations. Here, we report that the phase of theta oscillations (3-6 Hz) in the frontal eye field (FEF) is associated with the spatiotemporal variation of information readout from working memory (WM). Non-human primates were briefly shown a sample array of colored squares. A short time later, they viewed a test array and were rewarded for identifying which square changed color (the target). Behavioral performance varied systematically with theta phase at the time of test array onset, as well as
