Halo nevi in Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by an abnormal or missing X-chromosome. Rarely reported cutaneous manifestations in Turner syndrome include hemangiomas, angiokeratomas, hirsutism, and halo nevi. A recent study demonstrated an increased prevalence of halo nevi in Turner syndrome when compared to vitiligo. We present a case of halo nevi with multiple melanocytic nevi in an 11-year-old patient with Turner syndrome on growth hormone.

A new hypothesis about the origin of uterine fibroids based on gene expression profiling with microarrays.

This article will discuss some recent insights based on our microarray studies that have emphasized the role the extracellular matrix, transforming growth factor beta, and collagen structure in fibroid formation. These studies led to appreciation of molecular similarities between fibroids and keloids. Collectively, these observations suggest a model of fibroid development based on an abnormal response to tissue repair, resulting in disordered healing and formation of an altered extracellular matrix.

[Rett syndrome. A frequent cause of progressive mental retardation in girls].

We report 6 cases of Rett syndrome, a disorder that occurs only in girls and is characterized by slowly progressive deterioration of higher brain function, with dementia and autistic behavior, loss of purposeful use of the hands and deceleration of head growth. We consider interesting this report because Rett syndrome would be an important cause of mental retardation in girls, which has been overlooked until few years ago.

A case of adiposis dolorosa: lipid metabolism and hormone secretion.

The present report describes a 53-year-old non-obese man with adiposis dolorosa whose pain was dramatically relieved by the intravenous injection of lidocaine. The patient showed a paradoxical response of growth hormone to thyrotropin-releasing hormone. In addition, in-vitro studies on adipose tissue metabolism revealed the reduced glucose conversion to neutral glycerides in painful adipose tissue. These abnormalities may be related in some ways to the pathogenesis of this disorder.

Executive function in CHARGE syndrome.

This study addressed the presence of executive dysfunction in children with CHARGE syndrome, a genetic disorder with multiple physical anomalies and severe challenging behaviors. Ninety-eight children were included in the study. More than half received clinically significant scores on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF; Gioia et al., 2000) scales of Shift, Monitor, and the Behavioral Regulation Index, with additional high scores on Inhibit and the Global Executive Composite. Associations were found with the age the child first walked, scores on the Autism Behavior Check

Cerebrolysin therapy in Rett syndrome: clinical and EEG mapping study.

Based on the suggestion that nerve growth factor plays a core role in the brain maturation process, which is altered in Rett syndrome, we investigate the influence of Cerebrolysin--the brain-derived peptidergic drug - on motor and higher cortical functions in Rett syndrome girls. The open pilot study was performed on nine Rett syndrome girls (aged from 2 years and 2 months to 7 years and 6 months) at stage 3 of the illness, and included both clinical and quantitative EEG evaluations before and after Cerebrolysin treatment. After Cerebrolysin treatment, increases in the behavioral activity, att

Dynamic Metabolite Profile Changes in Semen Ziziphi Spinosae During Ripening.

RATIONALE: In traditional Chinese medicine, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae (SZS) is employed for alleviating conditions such as neurasthenia, sleep disorders, and anxiety. Its therapeutic effects are attributed to an abundance of biologically active compounds. The main objective of this study was the comparative profiling of SZS from different harvest times using a widely targeted metabolomics approach. METHODS: First, UPLC-Q Trap-MS/MS was used for identification of metabolic profile. Then, multivariate statistical analysis and KEGG enrichment analysis were performed to screen out the differential m

Characteristic Mutational Damages in Gastric and Colorectal Adenocarcinomas.

INTRODUCTION: Gastric and colorectal adenocarcinomas are prevalent malignancies characterized by mutations in genes such as p53, RAS, and MDM2, which play crucial roles in tumorigenesis and cancer progression. Understanding the specific mutational patterns and their implications in these cancers was essential for identifying potential therapeutic targets. AIM: To identify the nature of mutational disorders in the p53, p21Waf1, RAS and MDM2 genes, depending on the degree of cell differentiation by adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract. METHODS: Genomic DNA was isolated from 200 sample

Genomic Selection Signals in Andean Highlanders Reveal Adaptive Placental Metabolic Phenotypes That Are Disrupted in Preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: The chronic hypoxia of high-altitude residence poses challenges for tissue oxygen supply and metabolism. Exposure to high altitude during pregnancy increases the incidence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and fetal growth restriction and alters placental metabolism. High-altitude ancestry protects against altitude-associated fetal growth restriction, indicating hypoxia tolerance that is genetic in nature. Yet, not all babies are protected and placental pathologies associated with fetal growth restriction occur in some Andean highlanders. METHODS: We examined placental metabo

The Roles of Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 and 4 in Olfactory Regeneration.

Olfactory disorders, which are closely related to cognitive deterioration, can be caused by several factors, including infections, such as COVID-19; aging; and environmental chemicals. Injured olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) regenerate after birth, but it is unclear which receptors and sensors are involved in ORN regeneration. Recently, there has been great focus on the involvement of transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) channels, which are nociceptors expressed on sensory nerves during the healing of damaged tissues. The localization of TRPV in the olfactory nervous system has been

Evolving pituitary hormone deficits in primarily isolated GHD: a review and experts' consensus.

Isolated growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is defined by growth failure in combination with retarded bone age, low serum insulin-like growth factor-1, and insufficient GH peaks in two independent GH stimulation tests. Congenital GHD can present at any age and can be associated with significant malformations of the pituitary-hypothalamic region or the midline of the brain. In rare instances, genetic analysis reveals germline mutations of transcription factors involved in embryogenesis of the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. Acquired GHD is caused by radiation, inflammation, or tumor growth.

No pain, no gain: lack of exercise obstructs neurogenesis.

Bedridden patients develop atrophied muscles, their daily activities greatly reduced, and some display a depressive mood. Patients who are able to receive physical rehabilitation sometimes show surprising clinical improvements, including reduced depression and attenuation of other stress-related behaviors. Regenerative medicine has advanced two major stem cell-based therapies for CNS disorders, namely, transplantation of exogenous stem cells and amplification of endogenous neurogenesis. The latter strategy embraces a natural way of reinnervating the damaged brain and correcting the neurologica

Histological features of endplates of the mammalian spine: from mice to men.

STUDY DESIGN: Histological features of the intervertebral disc (IVD)-endplate interface were analyzed. OBJECTIVE: To define cartilaginous and bony vertebral endplate in commonly used laboratory animals and compare with that of the humans. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Endplates are crucial for the IVD nutrient supply: the IVDs have limited blood supply; most nutrients diffuse through endplates to nourish the discs. Various animal models of IVD and endplate degeneration have been used to study the etiology and treatments of spinal disorders. However, because humans are biped, the spine mechanic

Elevated serum levels of IGF-1 are sufficient to establish normal body size and skeletal properties even in the absence of tissue IGF-1.

Use of recombinant insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) as a treatment for primary IGF-1 deficiency in children has become increasingly common. When untreated, primary IGF-1 deficiency may lead to a range of metabolic disorders, including lipid abnormalities, insulin resistance, and decreased bone density. To date, results of this therapy are considered encouraging; however, our understanding of the role played by IGF-1 during development remains limited. Studies on long-term treatment with recombinant IGF-1 in both children and animals are few. Here, we used two novel transgenic mouse strains

Neurological Correlates of Fetal Cocaine Exposurea.

Cocaine is a highly psychoactive substance with numerous effects that readily crosses the placenta, achieving variables levels in the fetus. Determining whether prenatal exposure to cocaine and its metabolites damages the developing human nervous system is hindered by the multiple intervening factors (confounders) that plague clinical settings, which warrant consideration in controlled studies. Prenatal cocaine exposure has been linked to numerous adverse neonatal outcomes, affecting fetal growth (i.e., low birth weight, intrauterine growth retardation, and small head size) and neurobehavior.
