Noradrenergic pharmacotherapy, intracerebral infusion and adrenal transplantation promote functional recovery after cortical damage.

The research described in this review briefly summarizes evidence that short term pharmacological enhancement of noradrenergic (NA) synaptic activity, combined with symptom relevant experience (SRE), promotes functional recovery of some symptoms of cortical damage in rat, cat and human beings even when treatment is initiated from days to weeks after injury. A summary is provided of the numerous drugs tested in rodent cortical injury models which have been proven useful for predicting beneficial or harmful effects on behavioral outcome in human stroke. The pattern of drug effects indicates a ce

Nasal high flow therapy for primary respiratory support in preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Nasal high flow (nHF) therapy provides heated, humidified air and oxygen via two small nasal prongs, at gas flows of more than 1 litre/minute (L/min), typically 2 L/min to 8 L/min. nHF is commonly used for non-invasive respiratory support in preterm neonates. It may be used in this population for primary respiratory support (avoiding, or prior to the use of mechanical ventilation via an endotracheal tube) for prophylaxis or treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). This is an update of a review first published in 2011 and updated in 2016. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefi

Prevalence and correlates of e-cigarette use among older adults aged 60 years and over.

PURPOSE: E-cigarette use has increased substantially in the general population, yet evidence on use among older adults remains limited. Older adults bear a disproportionate burden of smoking-related morbidity and, in some populations, have shown persistently high smoking prevalence relative to younger age groups. Understanding the prevalence and correlates of e-cigarette use in this population is essential to inform targeted tobacco control and harm reduction strategies. METHODS: We conducted a pooled cross-sectional analysis of 13,297 adults aged 60 years and over (mean age 71.4 years; 54.3%…

Difference in pain experience between manual and motor-driven methods of interproximal enamel reduction: a single centre randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Interproximal enamel reduction (IER) is a common orthodontic procedure used to correct tooth-size discrepancies, create space, and reduce black triangles. Although several studies have examined the effects of IER on enamel roughness, caries risk, and periodontal health, none have investigated patient-reported pain associated with different IER techniques. As pain is a key patient-reported outcome, understanding how it varies between manual and motor-driven techniques can help clinicians improve patient comfort, refine treatment planning, and enhance informed consent discussions. Targeting alcohol use in high-risk population groups: a US microsimulation study of beverage-specific pricing policies.

BACKGROUND: Raising retail prices on alcoholic beverages preferred by high-risk groups (males, those of low socioeconomic status, and those with heavy alcohol use) might selectively reduce their alcohol consumption. However, the differential impact of beverage-specific price increases on US population groups has yet to be studied. This study aimed to simulate the effect of beverage-specific price increases on alcohol use within subgroups of the adult US population defined by sex, educational attainment, and alcohol use category. METHODS: An individual-level microsimulation of the US populatio

Assessment of a Hotel-Based COVID-19 Isolation and Quarantine Strategy for Persons Experiencing Homelessness.

IMPORTANCE: Several jurisdictions in the United States have secured hotels to temporarily house people experiencing homelessness who require isolation or quarantine for confirmed or suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). To our knowledge, little is known about how these programs serve this vulnerable population outside the hospital setting. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety of a hotel-based isolation and quarantine (I/Q) care system and its association with inpatient hospital capacity. Inhaled corticosteroids for cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Reduction of lung inflammation is one of the goals of cystic fibrosis therapy. Inhaled corticosteroids are often used to treat children and adults with cystic fibrosis. The rationale for this is their potential to reduce lung damage arising from inflammation, as well as their effect on symptomatic wheezing. It is important to establish the current level of evidence for the risks and benefits of inhaled corticosteroids, especially in the light of their known adverse effects on growth. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of taking regular inhaled corticosteroids, compared to not

Two- to six-year outcomes of tunnel technique with connective tissue graft in multiple mandibular anterior recessions.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to report the 2-6 year outcomes of the tunnel technique with a connective tissue graft (TUN+CTG) in treating multiple Cairo recession type 1 and 2 recessions over a 2-6 year follow-up, and the influence of CTG exposure on treatment effects. METHODS: Seventeen patients with 73 multiple recession sites were treated with TUN+CTG (27 of RT1 vs. 46 of RT2). A total of 32 sites exhibited CTG exposure. The average extent of exposure was 2.21 ± 0.95 mm. The recession depth (RD), keratinized gingival width (KGW), percentage of root coverage (RC), percentage of

Effectiveness, Usability, and Satisfaction of a Self-Administered Digital Intervention for Reducing Depression, Anxiety, and Stress in a University Community in the Andean Region of Peru: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: University communities, especially in low-resource settings like Peru's Andean region, experience high rates of depression, anxiety, and stress, which harm academic performance and well-being. Traditional mental health services often remain inaccessible, necessitating scalable, self-guided solutions. While digital mental health interventions have shown promise broadly, evidence is scarce for fully self-administered platforms in low-resource university environments. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the efficacy of a self-administered digital mental health service in members of a public univ

Decline in US Drug Overdose Deaths by Region, Substance, and Demographics.

IMPORTANCE: Drug overdose deaths (DODs) surged with the advent of fentanyl. Recent US reports indicated a decline, but standard surveillance … 2023 after 2 decades of increase. This shift may reflect changes in drug markets, treatment access, harm reduction efforts, and population-level risk. Although the decline is encouraging, persistent disparities highlight the need for targeted interventions and improved understanding of the underlying drivers.

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists in Plastic Surgery: Perioperative Considerations and Safety Protocols.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are increasingly prescribed among plastic surgery patients for obesity and overweight. Agents such as dulaglutide, liraglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide differ in pharmacology and dosing, directly influencing perioperative safety, particularly due to their effects on gastric motility and the high frequency of gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events that raise concerns about aspiration and postoperative morbidity in urgent or elective procedures. A narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library (2010-2025). Ra
