Background/Objectives: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience persistent physical symptoms and psychosocial challenges that can impair functioning and quality of life. Health mindset, beliefs about whether health is fixed versus malleable and responsive to effort, is linked to positive health outcomes but has not been examined in AYAs with IBD. This study evaluated the internal reliability of a health mindset measure in AYAs with IBD and examined associations between health mindset and depressive symptoms, peer relationships, global health, pain in

INTRODUCTION: Individuals who have had adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) tend to have more health problems as adults. They are also at higher risk of adopting health-risk behaviors, further increasing the risk of negative health outcomes and premature death. This study aimed to assess the associations between ACEs, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), health problems, and health-risk behaviors in adulthood according to the number and nature of ACEs among Iceland's general population.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study among 12,400 individuals aged 18-80

The economic crisis in Venezuela has eroded the country's health-care infrastructure and threatened the public health of its people. Shortages in medications, health supplies, interruptions of basic utilities at health-care facilities, and the emigration of health-care workers have led to a progressive decline in the operational capacity of health care. The effect of the crisis on public health has been difficult to quantify since the Venezuelan Ministry of Health stopped publishing crucial public health statistics in 2016. We prepared a synthesis of health information, beyond what is availabl

BACKGROUND: Social media, encompassing online mental health communities (OMHCs), has revolutionized mental health discourse by fostering open discussions that drive population-specific empowerment. These discussions generate diverse empowerment processes, such as informational, family awareness, and social awareness support, that can empower different health-consumer populations based on their support needs. However, how OMHC discourse themes drive these empowerment processes remains unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand how discourse themes in Twitter/X OMHCs drive three cat

BACKGROUND: In ageing populations, frailty prevalence and associated demand for health and social care services are expected to increase. Whilst there is good evidence about the demand for primary and secondary care services, the estimated demand for community-based health and social care associated with frailty is not known.
AIM: To estimate future demand for community-based health services and publicly funded social care for those aged ≥50 with frailty, in England.
METHODS: Analysis of cohort data from North-West London provided rates of mental health, community health and publicly funded

The US is facing a growing epidemic of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), with over 2.5 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis reported in 2021 and again in 2022. This public health crisis disproportionately affects youth and racial and ethnic minority communities, exacerbating barriers to accessing sexual health services. Untreated STIs can lead to severe health consequences, including infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and increased risk of HIV transmission and acquisition. Managed care organizations (MCOs) within Medicaid play a pivotal role in improving sexual heal

Free-range pig systems support rural livelihoods in Zambia but increase exposure to contagious diseases through unrestricted movement, environmental contamination, and informal trade. We explored non-biological drivers of disease risk in Gwembe District to inform practical control strategies. We used Spatial Group Model Building (SGMB) with LayerStack mapping to engage 12 purposively selected value-chain actors (farmers, traders, transporters, and veterinary personnel). Participants co-produced spatial layers (settlements, production zones, markets, disease occurrence, service points), behavio

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Spina bifida is a birth defect of the spinal column that is a substantial contributor to serious developmental disabilities in the United States. The risk for spina bifida and other neural tube defects (NTDs) can be reduced if women consume 0.4 mg of folic acid before and during the first trimester of pregnancy. Public health programs are being developed to prevent many NTDs by increasing the consumption of folic acid by women of childbearing age. To assess the national impact of these programs on the prevalence of NTDs at birth, multistate surveillance is needed to monitor

BACKGROUND: The conceptualization, definition, and measurement of health system resilience remain contested, hindering policy integration. Country-specific empirical evidence from sub-Saharan Africa, where infectious disease shocks recur, is limited. This study explored how national-level Ugandan stakeholders conceptualize health system resilience to infectious disease shocks and its attributes.
METHODS: We conducted a descriptive exploratory qualitative study using semi-structured key informant interviews with 15 purposively selected national-level stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, a

The eye has emerged as a vital window into systemic health and a powerful tool for proactive, preventive healthcare. This study explored how ideas from antiquity to the 19th century gradually led to the emergence of ophthalmoscopy and the contemporary model of healthcare through the eye. Key developments across the Eurasian continent were examined through the lenses of cultural anthropology, historical medicine and ophthalmic science. Texts were selected to illustrate major conceptual transitions concerning disease causation and the perceived relationship between the eyes and internal organs.

Background/Objectives: Remote patient monitoring (RPM) is recognized as a key component of health system transformation in Europe, in the context of vulnerable populations. However, its large-scale adoption remains uneven across countries. The research explored how technical infrastructure, governance and regulation, interoperability, and ecosystem readiness influence RPM adoption and scale-up in seven European country contexts. Methods: An exploratory qualitative cross-country study combined targeted desk research with semi-structured interviews conducted between February and March 2025. The

Artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare holds transformative potential but risks exacerbating existing health disparities if inclusivity is not explicitly accounted for. This study addresses the disconnected discussions on inclusive health AI by developing a comprehensive framework, PREFER-IT. This framework is based on the outcomes of a five-day transdisciplinary co-creation workshop that involved 37 experts from diverse backgrounds, including healthcare, ethics, law, social sciences, AI, and patient advocacy, held in the Netherlands. For this workshop, we used design thinking and particip

The Amazon Basin is undergoing rapid climatic and environmental changes, with direct impacts on infectious disease transmission and public health. Rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, and more frequent extreme events are reshaping vector and pathogen dynamics. Additionally, deforestation and land-use change increase human and animal exposure. These combined factors intensify the risk of disease transmission in the region. This narrative review synthesizes evidence generated by researchers from a reference center in tropical medicine in the Amazon, integrating epidemiological analyse
