Benzene homologues in environmental matrixes from a pesticide chemical region in China: Occurrence, health risk and management.

The contamination status and health risks of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) in air, soil, dust and groundwater were evaluated in a pesticide chemical region located in Hebei province, China. The concentrations of BTEX in air ranged from 7.80 to 238ug/m(3) and those in soil and dust ranged from lower than limit of detection (LOD) to 32,360ng/g dw, and those in groundwater varied from 2.68 to 98.6ug/L. Generally, the levels of BTEX in multimedia matrixes were all below the standards established in China. Health risk assessment was performed based on the monitoring data via inha

Capacity building in environmental health research in India and Nepal.

The Fogarty International Training and Research Program in Environmental and Occupational Health at UC Berkeley concentrates on two major environmental health issues in the Indian subcontinent: arsenic in drinking water in West Bengal, India, and indoor air pollution in India and Nepal. Local trainees and researchers have had the opportunity to work on related research. Concerning arsenic in drinking water, projects included studies of skin lesions, pulmonary effects, reproductive outcomes, and child development, as well as mitigation approaches to reduce exposures. Activities in the indoor ai

Accident settlement for avian influenza in travel health insurance.

Among those infectious diseases that lead to insurance settlement for damages, we normally list those cases that do not involve person-to-person transmission, but rather those cases wherein the harmful agent enters the body without the intention of the person harmed, and which causes acute infectious disease or food poisoning. This is the way in which, for example, tick-borne encephalitis following an insect bite, rabies caused by animal bites, and acute food poisoning contracted in restaurants or from public catering arise. We can also list among the latter those cases of avian influenza illn

Risk Assessment in the Working Environment in Estonia.

The first step to chart hazards in the working environment in Estonia (labour force: 0.65 million) was taken by the National Board of Health Protection in the beginning of 1996. The existing chemical, physical, and biological agents in the working environment were investigated with the help of local health inspectors in all counties. An identification of hazards and workers at risk was carried out. The results of the analysis showed that 16% of Estonian industrial workers are exposed to different hazards: 20,000 persons are exposed to noise, 11,000 are working in the conditions of vibration, 1

Genotoxicity and chronic health effects of automobile exhaust: a study on the traffic policemen in the city of Lanzhou.

A study on the health and genotoxic effects of occupational exposure to automobile exhaust was carried out among traffic policemen in Lanzhou (China) in 1996. A total of 78 traffic policemen working in the field was the exposed group, and 57 household register policemen working in the office was the control group. The health effects were evaluated by health questionnaires. Significant differences were observed between the exposed and control groups with respect to the morbidity of rhinitis, pharyngitis, trachoma, syndrome of neurasthenia and joint pain, apart from disorders in the digestive sy

[Health problems among persons exposed to grain dust].

This review describes health problems in persons primarily exposed to grain dust. The main epidemiological investigations from the nineteen seventies and eighties are reviewed. The commonest complaints were mucus membrane irritation. In the majority of investigations, an excess incidence of chronic bronchitis was encountered and it cannot be disproved that asthma developed in a number of the employees. Influenza-like symptoms compatible with the organic dust syndrome have been described in several investigations from silos but allergic alveolitis has not been described in this branch. The latt

High Environmental Stability of Hepatitis B Virus and Inactivation Requirements for Chemical Biocides.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is considered a major public health problem worldwide, and a significant number of reports on nosocomial and occupational outbreaks have been reported. This systematic investigation of HBV stability and susceptibility to different antiseptics revealed that HBV infectivity was very stable, with a half-life of >22 days at 37°C. At 4°C, infectivity was barely reduced for up to 9 months. Different alcohols and commercially available hand antiseptics had a virucidal effect against HBV. We propose that very strict compliance with established hygienic guidelines shou

Vision concerns after mild traumatic brain injury.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can manifest with visual dysfunction including deficits in accommodation, vergence movements, versions, and field of vision as well increased photosensitivity and a decline in ocular and overall health. Patients with incomitant strabismus should be referred to an ophthalmologist for intervention. Patients with mTBI who experience photosensitivity, or deficits in accommodation, versions, vergences, or field of vision may benefit from vision rehabilitation. These therapies may include spectacles with tinting and a variety of prism combinations. Patients with ch

Shift work and sleep: optimizing health, safety, and performance.

Shift work is a fundamental component of the US workforce and an integral part of the lifestyles of a large proportion of the population. More than 22 million Americans work on shifts as part of their work life. Emerging research suggests that shift workers are at higher risk for a range of metabolic disorders and diseases (eg, obesity, cardiovascular disease, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal problems, abnormal blood glucose levels, and metabolic syndrome). Sleep disorders associated with shift work also pose a serious public health risk, as they can impair an individual's ability to perform ef

Pregnant women in the workplace: distinguishing between normal and abnormal physiologic changes.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in 2001 that 51% of married women return to the work force before their children are 1 year old (Rojjanasrirat, 2004). Women's roles in the United States are rapidly changing, and the workplace environment is also changing to meet the added demands of women in the work force. Many women assimilate the multiple roles of wife, mother, and working professional into a cohesive unit; however, this is often difficult. Occupational health nurses play a vital role advocating for women in the work force. A critical area of advocacy (and education) focuses on prov

Vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is an important plastic resin for construction, pipe and tubing, siding, and other uses. Exposures to vinyl chloride monomer during the early years of production resulted in an important sentinel health event: the recognition of an excess of a rare liver cancer, hepatic angiosarcoma, at facilities throughout the world. Several other syndromes, including acro-osteolysis, also have been associated with PVC, but less clearly with vinyl chloride. Extensive research ranging from large-scale epidemiologic studies to biomarker research into molecular mechanisms continues to p

Cutaneous manifestations of anthrax in rural Haiti.

In industrialized countries, the zoonotic disease anthrax has been virtually eradicated because of effective public health measures including animal vaccination and quality control of animal products. In developing parts of the world, however, anthrax remains an occupational hazard of herdsmen and workers who have direct contact with infected animals or who process animal hides, hair, bone and bone products, and wool. For clinicians unfamiliar with this interesting infectious disease, the major dermatologic characteristics and clinical evolution of five cases of cutaneous anthrax are reviewed

Onychomycosis: a significant medical disorder.

A number of factors have contributed to the growing incidence of fungal nail infections, including an aging population, an expanding number of immunocompromised patients, and increasing participation in fitness-related activities. Although onychomycosis and other nail diseases can adversely affect the appearance of the nail unit, the impact of such nail disfigurement extends well beyond the aesthetic realm. In fact, many patients with fungal nail infections experience serious physical, psychosocial, and occupational effects as a result of this disease. In addition, onychomycosis is a serious h

A case-control study of past history of nasal diseases and maxillary sinus cancer in Hokkaido, Japan.

A case-control study of maxillary sinus cancer was performed in Hokkaido with 116 cases and 232 controls matched for sex, age (within 5 years), and residence (same health center region). Preliminary univariate analyses showed that a history of chronic sinusitis [relative risk (RR) = 3.1]; nasal polyps (RR = 5.7); an occupational history of being a carpenter, joiner, furniture maker, or other woodworker (RR = 2.9); and a history of current or past cigarette smoking (RR = 3.3) were statistically significant risk factors for men. No single item was a significant risk factor for women.

Schistosomiasis in a mining area: intersectoral implications.

The high prevalence (greater than 90%) and intensity of infection (50% of those infected excreted greater than 600 eggs per gram of faeces) of schistosomiasis in a tin mining area in eastern Zaire is related to extensive man-made ecological changes and intensive man/water contact. Construction of latrines, water supply and availability of diagnosis and treatment through occupational health services have been used in control efforts. The integration of environmental measures is limited by their high costs. The control of schistosomiasis in this area of intense transmission would require repetit

Research needs in leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis is a widespread infection of man and animals, and locally it assumes considerable importance as a public health and economic problem. It is an important occupational infection among persons working with animals or in environments that may be contaminated by infected animals. In recent years, considerable attention has been devoted to this infection but efforts to control and eliminate it, especially from natural foci, are hindered by gaps in our knowledge. This memorandum is a review of recent progress and current problems in leptospirosis research, with special reference to taxo
