INTRODUCTION: High Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) prevalence is well documented among peptic ulcer patients. However, there have been recent reports of declining H. pylori infection rates in developed countries. Based on previous local data in a different hospital, H. pylori prevalence was 66% in gastric ulcer, 86% in duodenal ulcer and 75% in combined gastric and duodenal ulcers. Our present study aims to review the recent H. pylori prevalence in peptic ulcer patients in a Singapore hospital. H. pylori infection rate in relation to sex, age, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use a

The paper is dedicated to the study of effects of helicobacteriosis on the alimentary canal in children with special reference to particular features of the clinical picture of this medical problem. Methods are described for pathogenetic and symptomatic treatment of chronic disorders of the upper portion of the alimentary canal in children.

Various in situ hybridization (ISH) methods have been used to identify Helicobacter pylori, a causative organism responsible for chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease, but they were hard to perform and time consuming. To detect H. pylori in a rapid and easily reproducible way, we developed synthetic biotinylated oligonucleotide probes which complement rRNA of H. pylori. Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded tissues from 50 gastric biopsy specimens were examined. Using a serologic test and histochemical stain (Warthin-Starry silver stain and/or Giemsa stain) as a standard, 40 of them were c

Duodenal ulcer (DU) is frequently accompanied by Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and associated with the imbalance of aggressive factors and defensive factors. To investigate the possible relationship between Hp and regional gastric blood flow, 26 endoscopically proved DU (scar stage) and Hp infection patients were included and received triple therapy (colloid bismuth subcitrate 120 mg qid for 4 weeks, amoxicillin 500 mg qid for 2 weeks and metronidazole 250 mg tid for 2 weeks). Regional gastroduodenal blood flow (RGDF) was measured at DU scar area and antrum lesser curvature site by laser

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is responsible for a high proportion of digestive symptoms attributable to the upper gastrointestinal tract. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the main etiologic factor in chronic gastritis and gastroduodenal ulcer disease, but its relation with GERD has not yet been established. The aim of this paper is to review the relationship between H. pylori and GERD, trying to answer the question whether a nexus of "friendship" or "hate" exists between them. Although H. pylori may, in theory, represent a cause for GERD, available data suggest that the infection i

The prevailing concept of peptic ulcer etiology has swung over entirely in just a few years from the psychological to the infectious, yet the rich literature documenting an association between psychosocial factors and ulcer is not invalidated by the discovery of Helicobacter pylori. Physical and psychological stressors interact to induce ulcers in animal models, concrete life difficulties and subjective distress predict the development of ulcers in prospective cohorts, shared catastrophes such as war and earthquakes lead to surges in hospitalizations for complicated ulcers, and stress or anxie

Autoantibodies against gastric epithelial cells are detectable in up to 50% of patients with chronic, active Helicobacter pylori gastritis. Presence of autoantibodies against canalicular structures within human parietal cells (anticanalicular autoantibodies) correlate with gastric mucosa atrophy. It has been suggested, that molecular mimicry between H pylori and the host on the level of Lewis X and Lewis Y blood group antigens leads to these autoantibodies. This study aimed at analysing whether antigastric antibodies can be absorbed to Lewis X or Y positive H pylori strains. Sera from 14 H pyl

Patients with duodenal ulcer have lower gastroduodenal mucosal histamine and a reduced tissue fibrinolysis at the ulcer edge. In the duodenal mucosa fibrinolysis is regulated by the tissue-type and urokinase-type plasminogen activators; and inhibitors type 1 and type 2. Trends across ordered groups leading from mucosa of nonulcer control subjects, "normal" mucosa of ulcer patients, to ulcer edge were found in tissue-type plasminogen activator concentration, histamine concentration, and histamine methyltransferase activity. Concentrations of tissue-type activator, inhibitor type 1, and histamin

Rebamipide, a gastroprotective drug developed in Japan, accelerates ulcer healing and reduces recurrence of experimental gastric ulcers. We examined the effects of rebamipide, given during healing of human gastric ulcers infected with Helicobacter pylori, on the quality of ulcer healing and ulcer recurrence. Sixty H. pylori-positive patients with gastric ulcers were randomly allocated to three treatment groups: group O (N = 20) received 20 mg of omeprazole every day for eight weeks, group OR (N = 20) received the same dose of omeprazole and 300 mg of rebamipide three times a day for eight week

BACKGROUND: The growth of primary low-grade B-cell gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is an antigen-dependent process
CASE: We were able to document the influence of Helicobacter pylori on the natural history of primary low-grade B-cell gastric MALT lymphoma in a case investigated by means of polymerase chain reaction for IgH rearrangement. In this case the presence or absence of the bacterium appeared to affect both clinical manifestations and histologic features of the neoplasia, with an acceleration or a slowing down of the neoplastic expansion, respectively.

A NIH Consensus Conference recommended Helicobacter pylori eradication to all ulcer patients, based mainly on information coming from countries with a low prevalence of infection in general population. The epidemiological situation is different in developing countries, where a pandemic of H. pylori goes unchecked, and most people become infected at young age. It is possible that response to eradication therapies and reinfection rate were to be included among the differences between developed and developing countries, raising doubts about the worldwide applicability of NIH recommendations. Beyond peptic ulcer disease, Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with intestinal-type gastric cancer and low-grade gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. It is also currently implicated as a possible cause of dyspepsia and extraintestinal disorders such as coronary artery disease, rosacea, chronic urticaria, and delayed growth in children. There are strong epidemiological data from large cohort studies linking H. pylori to gastric adenocarcinoma. Several cofactors, including early childhood acquisition of infection, strain-specific differences, genetic predispositio
