Automatic respiratory and bulk patient motion corrected (ACROBATIC) free-running whole-heart five-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: Free-running five-dimensional (5D) whole-heart magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) simplifies image acquisition by eliminating the need for external gating, breath-holding, and prospective scan planning. However, it remains vulnerable to patient movement in pediatric populations, which may require sedation or general anesthesia. We present a retrospective motion correction approach using the automatic respiratory and bulk patient motion correction (ACROBATIC) framework to detect, estimate, and correct for bulk motion, thereby improving image quality in pediatric cardiac MRI. METHODS: Fr

Rapid and motion-robust pediatric brain imaging: T2-weighted turbo-spin-echo PROPELLER acquisition with compressed sensing.

BACKGROUND: In pediatric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), reducing the rate of non-diagnostic scans due to artifacts and shortening acquisition time are crucial not only for economic reasons but also to minimize sedation or general anesthesia. OBJECTIVE: Enabling faster and motion-robust MRI of the brain in infants and children using a novel, enhanced compressed sensing (CS) algorithm in combination with a turbo-spin-echo T2-weighted sequence utilizing the PROPELLER-technique (periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction; T2PROPELLER CS). Impact of Length Indexing of Deformation in Echocardiographic Evaluation of Right Ventricular Function.

BACKGROUND: When assessing right ventricular (RV) function by echocardiography, some discordance between the deformational indices is predicted on the basis of the influence of RV length. RV free wall longitudinal strain (RVFWS) is relatively independent of RV length, whereas tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) reflects the strain-length product. Systolic annular velocity (s'; distance over time) is also likely to be influenced by length. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that indexing TAPSE and s' to RV length would lead to better congruency with RVFWS. METHODS:

Lymphatic pathway evaluation in congenital heart disease using 3D whole-heart balanced steady state free precession and T2-weighted cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: Due to passive blood flow in palliated single ventricle, central venous pressure increases chronically, ultimately impeding lymphatic drainage. Early visualization and treatment of these malformations is essential to reduce morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) T2-weighted lymphangiography (T2w) is used for lymphatic assessment, but its low signal-to-noise ratio may result in incomplete visualization of thoracic duct pathway. 3D-balanced steady state free precession (3D-bSSFP) is commonly used to assess congenital cardiac disease anatomy. Here, we aimed t

An improved method for estimating the heart-to-mediastinum ratio from cardiac sympathetic nerve imaging with low-energy high-resolution collimators.

BACKGROUND: Septal penetration causes underestimation of the heart-to-mediastinum (H/M) ratio in cardiac (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging with a low-energy high-resolution (LEHR) collimator. We aimed to improve the method of estimating the H/M ratios using the LEHR collimator. METHODS AND RESULTS: 4 hours after (123)I-MIBG injection, 40 patients were imaged successively with the medium-energy (ME) and LEHR collimators using gamma cameras having 3/8-inch crystals. Severe underestimation of the H/M ratios was observed with the LEHR collimator when compared to the ME collimator. Nar

Quantifying cerebellar atrophy in multiple system atrophy of the cerebellar type (MSA-C) using three-dimensional gyrification index analysis.

Multiple system atrophy of the cerebellar type (MSA-C) is a degenerative neurological disease of the central nervous system. This study employed a method named, "surface-based three-dimensional gyrification index" (3D-GI) to quantify morphological changes in normal cerebellum (including brainstem) and atrophied cerebellum, in patients with MSA-C. We assessed whether 3D-GI can exclude gender and age differences to quantify cerebellum and brainstem atrophy more accurately. Sixteen healthy subjects and 16 MSA-C patients participated in this study. We compared 3D-GI values and volumes in the cereb

Impact of genetic and renovascular chronic arterial hypertension on the acute spatiotemporal evolution of the ischemic penumbra: a sequential study with MRI in the rat.

Although chronic arterial hypertension (CAH) increases the risk of stroke and the severity of the resultant lesion, it is rarely integrated in preclinical studies. Here, we analyzed the impact of CAH on the acute spatiotemporal evolution of the ischemic penumbra as defined by the perfusion-weighted imaging/diffusion-weighted imaging mismatch. Sequential 7T-MRI examinations were performed from 30 minutes up to 4 hours after permanent cerebral ischemia in genetically hypertensive rats (spontaneously hypertensive rats, SHR), renovascular-hypertensive rats (RH-WKY), and their normotensive controls

Assessment of synovitis in the osteoarthritic knee: Comparison between manual segmentation, semiautomated segmentation, and semiquantitative assessment using contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted MRI.

Osteoarthritic joints regularly exhibit synovitis, which is ideally assessed on contrast-enhanced MRI. Manual segmentation is the reference standard for volumetric analysis but is labor intensive. The aim was to evaluate alternative semiautomated approaches of targeted thresholding and gaussian deconvolution. Volumetric and semiquantitative synovitis assessment was compared in addition. Thirty-two knees with osteoarthritis were scanned on a 1.5-T system. Synovitis volumes were plotted against each other and distributions fit with linear functions. The relationship between semiquantitative scor
