INTRODUCTION: Soon after starting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), some patients experience clinical deterioration due to the reactivation of their immune system. Mycobacteria are the principal agents complicating this immune reconstitution period.

PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate thin-section computed tomographic (CT) findings in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (ie, bone marrow transplant) patients with histopathologically proved pulmonary candidiasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ethical approval was obtained from the institutional review board of each of the three institutions; informed consent was not required. The study included 17 hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients with proved pulmonary candidiasis. Histopathologic specimens were acquired at transbronchial biopsy (n = 8), open lung biopsy (n = 6), and autopsy (n = 3).

Four children on chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia presented with severe diarrhea and dehydration. Cryptosporidium was identified in the stools using modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain. Two of them received paromomycin and responded well. This paper presents an overview of smooth muscle tumors occurring in deep soft tissue. Although the existence of leiomyomas of soft tissue has been questioned in the past, it appears that they do exist but are rare, and must be diagnosed using stringent histologic criteria that include no atypia and minimal or no mitotic activity.
