Leishmania/HIV co-infections: epidemiology in Europe.

As the AIDS pandemic spreads to rural areas and human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) becomes more common in suburban areas, there is an ever greater degree of overlap between the geographical distributions of the two diseases and, in consequence, an increasing incidence of Leishmania/HIV co-infection. Cases of the co-infection have been reported from 35 countries around the world but most have been recorded in south-western Europe. There has been a total of 1911 cases detected in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. The incidence of Leishmania/HIV co-infection is expected to continue increasing in

History of medicine: the metamorphosis of scientific medicine in the ever-present past.

Hippocrates (460-370 BCE), the father of medicine, developed principles for medical diagnosis and treatment together with a code of ethics. When the first Ptolemy ruled Egypt, he created a great library of 700,000 rolls at Alexandria, which became a repository for the works of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates, and all the writings of the known world, but it was destroyed by a great fire. Galen of Pergamum (129-216), who lived 500 years after Hippocrates, was well educated and studied anatomy, surgery, drugs and Hippocratic medicine. His ideas influenced medical thinking for the next 150

A comparison of the results of long-term follow-up for atypical intraductal hyperplasia and intraductal hyperplasia of the breast.

Follow-up information was obtained on 199 women with breast biopsy specimens containing intraductal epithelial proliferation. The proliferations were divided into regular or ordinary intraductal hyperplasia (IDH) (117 cases) and atypical intraductal hyperplasia (AIDH) (82 cases). The average length of follow-up was 14 years for the patients with IDH and 12.4 years for the patients with AIDH. Of the 117 patients with ordinary IDH, carcinoma subsequently developed in six (5%); three of these were invasive carcinomas (2.6%). All three invasive carcinomas were in the ipsilateral breast, but of the

Characterization of studies considered and required under Medicare's coverage with evidence development program.

IntroductionIn 2005, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services introduced the Coverage with Evidence Development program for items and services with limited evidence of benefit and harm for Medicare beneficiaries, aiming to generate evidence to determine whether they meet the statutory "reasonable and necessary" criteria for coverage. Coverage with Evidence Development requires participation in clinical studies approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (i.e. Coverage with Evidence Development-approved studies) as a condition of coverage. We examined the quality of evidenc

Awareness, knowledge and attitudes towards artificial intelligence among nursing students: a systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Internationally, nursing students' awareness and familiarity with artificial intelligence (AI) remain a challenge as evidenced by the current literature. Interestingly, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region has earned a strong standing for driving national digital transformation; however, this ambition has not been translated into research. Despite growing interest in AI-driven healthcare, empirical studies examining nursing students' readiness in these countries to operate in healthcare environments remain limited, representing a critical gap in the literature. Our initial l

Quality indicators for substance use disorder care: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are a major public health challenge, affecting millions of individuals globally and contributing to substantial morbidity and mortality. Individuals with SUDs face numerous barriers to accessing high-quality healthcare, leaving vulnerable populations susceptible to the undertreatment of SUDs. Despite the availability of clinical practice guidelines and effective interventions for SUD, there is a notable gap in the implementation and adherence to evidence-based care.Measuring the quality of care (QoC) is a critical initial step toward enhancing the t

Study protocol to assess clinical outcomes of breast cancer and its relationship with access to healthcare in Brazil-BREAST trial (BRaziLian outcomE for metAStatic breasT cancer): a prospective observational study in HER2-negative/hormone receptor-positive metastatic disease.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer survival rates in low-income and middle-income countries significantly differ from those in high-income countries, indicating limited access to first-line systemic therapy for advanced and metastatic tumours. Recent studies have demonstrated the benefits of combining cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitors (CDK 4/6) with endocrine therapy in hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative advanced or metastatic breast cancer. However, in Brazil, the population faces limited access to these drugs, particularly in the public healthcare

The European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry achieves Q1 status: a strategic advancement in specialised dental publishing.

The European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry (EJPD) has attained a significant milestone by entering the first quartile (Q1) in the 2024 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), curated by Clarivate Analytics, in both the "Dentistry, Oral Surgery & Medicine" and "Paediatrics" categories". This dual recognition is a rare and significant achievement for a journal exclusively devoted to paediatric dentistry, underscoring its growing influence within both the dental and broader medical research communities. Since its initial inclusion in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) in 2010, the European Journal of P

Ethics of Procuring and Using Organs or Tissue from Infants and Newborns for Transplantation, Research, or Commercial Purposes: Protocol for a Bioethics Scoping Review.

UNLABELLED: Since the inception of transplantation, it has been crucial to ensure that organ or tissue donations are made with valid informed consent to avoid concerns about coercion or exploitation. This issue is particularly challenging when it comes to infants and younger children, insofar as they are unable to provide consent. Despite their vulnerability, infants' organs and tissues are considered valuable for biomedical purposes due to their size and unique properties. This raises questions about the conditions under which it is permissible to remove and use these body parts for transplan

Study protocol for a factorial randomized trial of behavioral interventions to increase health care proxy documentation among older and seriously ill adults.

INTRODUCTION: Health care proxies serve as surrogate decision-makers for patients with limited decisional capacity, yet only one in three U.S. adults have designated one. This trial will evaluate low-cost, scalable behavioral interventions embedded in previsit mailed outreach to increase health care proxy documentation. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this 2 × 2 + 1 factorial superiority trial, approximately 20,000 patients with an upcoming in-person primary care visit at a Northern California health system will be randomized over a 12-month period into one of four intervention mailers encouraging d

Quality of care metrics contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluation processes of telehealth solutions in home-care settings for paediatric palliative care: protocol for a systematic literature review.

UNLABELLED: Paediatric palliative care (PPC) aims to improve the quality of life of children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. PPC addresses the needs of both the child and family and preferably starts immediately after a palliative diagnosis. It includes effective symptom management, psychosocial, spiritual and emotional support. Receiving PPC is often challenging due to the varied and complex nature of conditions and the difficulties in reaching all children who require palliative care. Telehealth offers a promising solution by enabling virtual access to interdisciplinary t

State of development of regional hospice and palliative care networks in Germany and a descriptive comparison of the role of coordination: results of an online survey using a maturity model.

BACKGROUND: Regional hospice and palliative care networks (RHPCNs) aim to establish frameworks for care-management level collaboration between end-of-life care providers within specific regions. Since 2022, political support for RHPCNs in Germany has been bolstered by a new funding guideline for network coordination under § 39d SGB V. However, despite this political backing, limited data exist on the development of these networks. The present study, conducted within the framework of the HOPAN project, aimed to systematically assess the maturity of RHPCNs in Germany and offer first insights in

Effect of fish oil as an adjunct therapy to metformin on vascular and cardiac health in women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome: protocol for a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) (formerly known as polycystic ovary syndrome) is a metabolic-endocrine disorder that affects 8-13% of women globally and is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) across the lifespan. CVD develops in young women due to risk factors such as atherogenic dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance and elevated body weight. High-risk overweight-obese young women with PMOS often present with subclinical CVD including atherosclerotic CVD and cardiac hypertrophy. Metformin is prescribed as standard of care to treat insulin resistance

Rapid Qualitative Approaches in Pandemic Research: Protocol for an Exploratory Qualitative Multimethod Study (VERDIQual) on Mpox in Italy, Nigeria, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Recent mpox outbreaks have underscored significant gaps in global preparedness for emerging and re-emerging infections. These outbreaks have disproportionately affected vulnerable and marginalized populations, exposing the weaknesses of health systems, particularly in resource-limited settings. The global spread of mpox beyond endemic African countries in 2022 and the emergence of a new Clade Ib in 2024 emphasize the pressing need for comprehensive and context-specific public health responses. We outline the protocol for an innovative multimethod qualitative study (VERDIQual [SARS-

Linezolid in addition to standard antibiotic treatment for Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia: study protocol for a randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) bacteraemia is a common and severe infection. With mortality rates ranging from 20-30% and long-term impairments in over a third of survivors, better treatments are urgently needed. Linezolid, a well-established treatment for pneumonia and complicated skin infections, has been shown in preclinical studies to strongly suppress S. aureus virulence factors critical to bacterial persistence and tissue damage. Hence, we aim to investigate whether the addition of linezolid to standard therapy in patients with S. aureus bacteraemia leads to an overall i

A Culturally Grounded Music-Based Intervention for Indigenous Older Adults in Long-Term Care: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities continue to experience significant mental and physical health disparities associated with historical trauma, structural inequities, and disruptions to cultural continuity. Indigenous older adults residing in long-term care settings may be particularly vulnerable to social isolation, psychological distress, chronic pain, and reduced opportunities for cultural engagement. Music-based interventions (MBIs) have demonstrated potential for improving psychosocial and physical health outcomes; however, few MBIs have been culturally grounded in Indigenous worldviews o
