Major depression is associated with impairments in natural and cellular immune responses. Using a flow cytometric assay, conjugate formation between human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and three different human tumour cell lines has been analysed. The proliferation of splenocytes from healthy adults was induced by anti-CD3 McAb, PHA and IL-2. The proliferative capability and anti-tumor activity as well as phenotypes of the splenocytes cultured in different medium systems were studied. The immunologic status of 40 breast cancer patients with operable disease and 50 healthy women was studied at the Division of Medical Oncology of the 2nd Medical School in Naples. Skin tests and lymphocyte subpopulation determination were performed. The same tests were repeated after surgery in the cancer patients. At the same time, the immunologic modifications during chemotherapy (CMF) were studied in a further 25 premenopausal breast cancer patients. The cancer patients did not show significantly different reactivity to recall antigens, nor did surgery or chemotherapy modify this parameter.

Collecting duct carcinoma (CDC) is a recently recognised histological variety of renal carcinoma (RC) considered to arise from the epithelium of the collecting ducts. Diagnosis of this entity depends on well defined gross and microscopic criteria and is supported by a characteristic immunostaining pattern. Donor-specific alloreactivity of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) lymphocytes was evaluated in the immunologic monitoring of lung transplant patients. The study dealt with 161 BAL performed on 28 transplant recipients. Unseparated BAL cells, separated BAL lymphocytes, and PBL were tested for donor-specific proliferative responses in 3-day primed lymphocyte testing (PLT), and for nonspecific proliferative responsiveness to exogenous IL-2. The proliferation data were analyzed for correlation with the status of the lung allograft assessed clinically, histologically, and by pulmonary function testing.

Clonal chromosome abnormalities were demonstrated in 13 cases of T cell leukemia with a mature membrane phenotype. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC), are inflammatory gastrointestinal conditions in which the pathogenesis is influenced by immune dysfunction, genetics, and environmental factors. Of the 2 conditions, UC is more prevalent, and there is a positive correlation between bacterial dysbiosis and colitis severity and incidence.
