BACKGROUND: Living donor lobar lung transplantation is a viable therapy for carefully selected patients with end-stage pulmonary disease. Its success is largely dependent upon donor outcome, including both physical and emotional factors. To date, there has been little focus on psychosocial outcomes of lobar lung donors.
METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of 15 of 20 living lobar lung transplant donors was performed. Donors underwent evaluation of pulmonary function after recovery from donor lobectomy. Participants completed two self-report questionnaires, the SF-36 Health Survey (SF-36) and th

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the impact of moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) on clinically significant depressive symptoms in elderly Chinese men aged 65 and above.
METHODS: In a large prospective cohort of 2000 Chinese men aged 65 to 92 years of age in Hong Kong, the association between moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms and clinically relevant depressive symptoms was studied. After excluding men with prostate or bladder cancer or surgery, 1980 subjects provided response to a structured interviewer-administered questionnaire and physical examination. A case-contr

Pregnant teenagers (N=344) were interviewed during first and third trimesters (average age=16.2 years) and interviewed again as young adults (average age=23.0 years). Nearly 47% were smokers during the first trimester, 58% smoked during the third trimester, and 61% were smokers in their early adult years. Some 40% (n=137) continued smoking into young adulthood (persistent smokers); 7% quit. Average number of cigarettes per day was 10.0 among persistent smokers and 6.8 among quitters (p<.05). Nearly 20% started smoking by young adulthood (late-onset smokers). Persistent smokers and quitters wer

INTRODUCTION: Deaths related to drug overdose and suicide in the USA have increased 500% and 35%, respectively, over the last two decades. The human and economic costs to society associated with these 'deaths of despair' are immense. Great efforts and substantial investments have been made in treatment and prevention, yet these efforts have not abated these increasing trajectories of deaths over time. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated and highlighted these problems. Notably, some geographical areas (eg, Appalachia, farmland) and some communities (eg, low-income persons, 'essential workers'

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID-19 conditions (PCC) or Long COVID, will linger due to continued circulation of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Understanding the burden and risk factors of PCC could guide development of management guidelines for affected persons.
METHODS: Using Population-Based Infectious Disease Surveillance platforms established in Nairobi and Siaya Counties in Kenya, we followed up participants previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 between 01/05/2020 and 30/09/2021 to evaluate the presence and risk factors for PCC. Interviews were conducted from 13/10/202

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to observe the associated risk factors of lower back pain and the factors that increase the pain severity. So, the main objective of this research is to identify the factors which may cause the lower back pain and the causal effect on the pain severity and respective treatment. This study also tries to determine the demographical characteristics of the low back pain patients and determine the inter relationship of psychological health, work stress and treatment effect with the pain disability index.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the emotional and behavioral problems of orphans in Rakai District, Uganda, and to suggest interventions. Studies, elsewhere, have shown orphans to have high levels of psychological problems. However, in Uganda such studies are limited and no specific interventions have been suggested.
METHODS: The study employed a cross-sectional unmatched case control design to compare emotional and behavioral problems of 210 randomly selected primary school-going orphans and 210 non-orphans using quantitative and qualitative methods employing standardized questionnaires,

BACKGROUND: Injection drug use is on the rise in the USA, and skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) are a common complication, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Due to structural barriers to care-seeking, many people who inject drugs avoid formal care and resort to self-care techniques, but little is known about the nature of these techniques, or more generally about the accuracy or breadth of this population's knowledge of SSTIs.
METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 people who inject heroin in two metropolitan areas: Sacramento and Boston, U

AIM: To explore attitudes towards insulin acceptance an ethnically diverse population of people with Type 2 diabetes.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews using a topic guide based on a literature review and findings from our previous study, which explored the perspectives of healthcare professionals about insulin initiation and management. Analysis of data involved undertaking an abductive reasoning approach in response to emerging themes.
RESULTS: Participants discussed not only their concerns about insulin therapy, but also their views and beliefs about the necessity of insuli

The aim of this study was to explore how former psychotherapy patients characterize "good outcome" after having completed treatment that they described as successful, in the sense that therapy had changed their lives in ways that made a difference. Semistructured qualitative depth interviews were conducted with 10 former psychotherapy patients. A hermeneutical-phenomenological approach was used to analyse interview transcripts. The former patients' descriptions of good outcome clustered around four themes: establishing new ways of relating to others; less symptomatic distress, or changes in be

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to examine the incidence of social phobia in the general population and to establish a number of risk indicators.
METHOD: Data were derived from the Netherlands Mental Health Survey and Incidence Study (NEMESIS) which is a population based prospective study (n=7076). A sample of adults aged 18-64 years (n=5618) were re-interviewed 1 year later using Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI).
RESULTS: The 12-month incidence of DSM-III-R social phobia was 1.0%. Low education, low mastery, low self-esteem, emotional neglect in childhood and ongoing difficul

Degree of connection to the criminal underworld was the basis for typologic research on 698 male drug abusers; interviews as well as official records were used. Four types were distinguished: The addicted criminals seemed to resemble the groups dominant in Sweden from the 1950s to the 1970s. An early crime debut and criminal offenses in youthful years characterized their deviant careers. Drugs and criminal activities coexisted with an often very high intake of alcohol and the most difficult childhood and adolescence conditions compared to the other types. The criminal addicts had fewer recorde

IMPORTANCE: The well-being of emergency medicine (EM) physicians significantly impacts health care systems, and patients. Understanding the interplay of factors contributing to EM physicians' mental health issues and burnout is essential for developing targeted support mechanisms.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the individual, environmental, and structural factors influencing the mental health and burnout experienced by EM physicians, thereby informing potential strategies for intervention and support.
DESIGN: A qualitative study using recorded and de-identified semi-structured interviews.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child due to cancer constitutes one of the most devastating experiences for parents and is associated with profound emotional, relational, and existential consequences. Pediatric psycho-oncology highlights the need for interventions that go beyond symptom reduction and address grief as a complex process involving emotional expression, social connection, and meaning reconstruction. However, qualitative research exploring parents' lived experiences of grief-focused group therapy remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the impact of therapeutic group in

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of India's urban population lives in informal settlements, facing substandard living conditions due to overcrowding, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic amenities. These conditions critically affect the psychosocial well-being of mothers, yet limited research exists on how the built environment impacts maternal psychosocial health in urban poor settings in India.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of housing conditions and neighborhood environments on maternal psychosocial health among mothers of children under five residing in urban slums and in-situ slu
