The contribution of animals to injury in urban populations is not well described. We reviewed our trauma admissions for animal-related injury to identify animals involved, risk factors and patterns of injury. Eight thousand nine hundred and fifty-four patients were admitted for trauma during the study period. One hundred and sixty-seven injuries were due to animals (1.9%). Horses were involved in 86% and dogs in 10% of injuries. Most horse riders were injured in falls. Factors associated with increased risk included being young, female and riding for leisure. OBJECTIVES: An elevated maximal amplitude (mA) value with rapid thrombelastography on admission can identify general trauma patients with an increased risk of venous thromboembolic events (VTEs). We hypothesized that (1) the risk of VTE traditionally assigned to injury lies specifically in those who sustain major orthopaedic trauma and (2) an elevated admission mA value could be used to identify patients with major orthopaedic injuries at risk for VTE during initial hospital admission.

The charts of 124 consecutive patients with extremity shotgun injuries managed over an 8-year period were reviewed to assess the results of a uniform protocol. This consisted of liberal use of arteriography, prompt exploration, wide debridement or fasciotomy, and frequent operating room dressing changes for large wounds. Thirty-three patients had arterial injuries and 16 had major venous injuries. Twenty patients had major soft tissue wounds and there were 15 significant long bone injuries. Trauma due to motor vehicles accident and urban violence have made distal arterial reconstruction an increasingly important part of the surgeon's work.
