The effects of gonadectomy on the secretion of prolactin, LH, TSH, and thyroxine were investigated. An 8-year-old girl with idiopathic central precocious puberty experienced multiple episodes of anaphylaxis after receiving a goserelin acetate implant. She was hospitalized and treated with epinephrine, antihistamine, and corticosteroids. The goserelin implant was surgically excised; however, anaphylactic symptoms continued for 4 days after excision. Less severe systemic symptoms recurred 6 weeks after removal; these were possibly due to leakage of the depot drug into subcutaneous tissues. UNLABELLED: We evaluated gonadal function in twenty prepubertal boys (6.87 +/- 3.84 years old) at diagnosis and 2.5 +/- 1.6 years after treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). The effects of marginal (MZD) and severe (SZD) zinc-deficient diets on testicular function and development were studied in rats maintained on dietary treatment for 6 weeks after weaning. PURPOSE: We evaluated the effect of patient age at treatment of cryptorchidism in relation to subsequent semen quality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semen analyses and hormonal evaluations were performed in 51 men who were treated for cryptorchidism at ages 10 months to 12 years.
RESULTS: Sperm concentration was normal in 90% of the patients with unilateral and 50% with bilateral cryptorchidism. No patient treated before age 4 years had severe sperm defects. Elevated follicle-stimulating hormone levels indicated severe testicular damage.
