Refining the assessment of BI-RADS 4 lesions on breast magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the positive predictive value (PPV) of the imaging characteristics of breast lesions classified as BI-RADS category 4 (risk of malignancy > 2% to < 95%) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in order to create an algorithm to subcategorize such lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study including 199 breast lesions (131 nodules and 68 non-mass lesions) classified as BI-RADS 4 on MRI. Of the 199 lesions, 93 were excluded, for various reasons: they were lymph nodes; they were not biopsied or were not followed at our center; they were additional findings

Neuroinflammation-targeted magnetic resonance imaging nanoprobes for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) that is an important contributor to dementia, is a chronic and irreversible neurodegenerative disease, with high rates of disability and mortality. Recently, more and more therapeutic methods have been developed to delay the progression of AD, but it remains a great challenge to achieve the early diagnosis of AD. In this work, we developed a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) nanoprobe (NP@angiopep-2/CD137) based on angiopep-2 peptide and CD137 antibody with a NaGdF4 nanoparticle as the core and realized neuroinflammation-targeted imaging on APP/PS1 model mice using a cl

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Guided Stereotactic Radiosurgery to Avoid Symptomatic Radionecrosis.

PURPOSE: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) localizes eloquent areas of the brain more accurately than structural imaging alone and minimizes the risk of neurosurgical injury. However, fMRI remains underutilized in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). We assessed the neuroanatomic relationship between SRS to brain metastases (BMs), nearby eloquent areas, identified using fMRI, and attributable symptoms of radionecrosis (RN). We then evaluated the advantage of a novel fMRI-guided SRS (fMRI-SRS) planning approach. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients with an fMRI study within 3 months of SRS f

The neurobiological foundation of effective repetitive transcranial magnetic brain stimulation in Alzheimer's disease.

Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), are promising candidate therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease (AD). We review the evidence supporting the fundamental mechanisms of action of rTMS treatments in AD. rTMS exerts profound effects at different neurobiological and systems neurophysiological levels. By engaging distinct pre- and postsynaptic structures within the stimulated neural network, it directly or indirectly influences various cellular and molecular components. In AD, rTMS influences synaptic plasticity, inducing last

Rapid and sensitive detection of Candida albicans using nystatin-functionalized magnetic spheres.

Candida albicans is the leading cause of invasive fungal disease; candidemia carries 30-40 % mortality. It commonly colonizes human mucosa as a commensal, but immunosuppression or disrupted microbiota enables opportunistic infection. Therefore, rapid, reliable diagnostics are vital to improve public health. In this study, a magnetic solid-phase microextraction (MSPE) technique based on nystatin-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@NYS) was developed to achieve the dual objectives of efficiently enriching C. albicans rapidly and extracting its deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Optimization o

4D Flow Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Uncovers the Hemodynamic Clue in Aortic Dissection.

BACKGROUND: Persistent or recurrent aortic coarctation after surgical repair can create hemodynamic stress that predisposes to aneurysm formation and dissection. CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old man with prior extra-anatomic bypass repair of coarctation presented with acute interscapular pain and an upper-to-lower limb pressure gradient of >40 mm Hg. Computed tomography showed a thrombosed graft, a descending thoracic aortic aneurysm, and a Stanford type B dissection. Multimodal imaging, including 4D flow cardiovascular magnetic resonance, showed a high-velocity jet traversing the coarctation and

Magnetic Fluid-Driven Vine Robots for Minimally Invasive Tissue Biopsy Sampling.

There is a growing need for precise, minimally invasive biopsy techniques that reduce patient discomfort, improve sampling accuracy in hard-to-reach areas, and minimize tissue damage. Vine robots, a type of continuum robot, offer a promising solution with their unique ability to evert, allowing them to navigate complex environments while reducing friction. This article presents a novel vine robot design powered by magnetic fluid. The fluid drives both vine growth through pressurization and enables precise steering and manipulation using external magnetic fields. Unlike previous designs, the ro

Cingulo-Opercular Connectivity Enhances the Repeatability of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Target Maps.

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) may be enhanced through individualized targeting in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Recent clinical trials have used TMS targeting based on the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) or right anterior insula (rAI) functional connectivity. However, the repeatability of such individual targeting may present significant challenges for feasibility. We aimed to compare the repeatability of the novel depression core network model-based (CNM) target maps with

Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Endolymphatic Hydrops Using Compressed Sensing Acceleration Technique.

Endolymphatic hydrops (EH) is a key underlying pathologic alteration of Ménière's disease (MD). MD is characterized by recurrent episodes of spontaneous vertigo, fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and aural fullness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in visualizing EH, with gadolinium-based contrast agents facilitating the identification of endolymph and perilymph. Specific MRI techniques, such as the hybrid of reversed image of positive endolymph signal and native image of positive perilymph signal (HYDROPS) imaging method, offer high-quality results but are

Electrophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder after transcranial magnetic stimulation: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the top ten most disabling diseases worldwide. In recent years, a significant number of OCD patients have not responded to psychological and pharmacological treatments, resulting in treatment-resistant OCD. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has emerged as a promising alternative strategy for treating treatment-resistant OCD and has been widely used in clinical practice. However, the EEG indicators associated with the anti-OCD effects of TMS are still not fully understood. This review systematically synthesizes EEG changes before a

Binding Capacity and Adsorption Stability of Uremic Metabolites to Albumin-Modified Magnetic Nanoparticles.

Kidney disease causes the retention of uremic metabolites in blood, which is associated with many comorbidities. Hemodialysis does not properly clear many metabolites, including large, middle-sized, and small protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs). Adsorption strategies for metabolite removal require the development of engineered adsorbents with tailored surfaces to increase the binding of desired metabolites. Albumin is uniquely positioned for modifying blood-contacting surfaces to absorb uremic metabolites, as it (i) minimizes non-specific protein adsorption and (ii) binds a range of molecules
