During August 1989, the urine of 5010 women of childbearing-age in Alabama was screened for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and barbiturates. A program of rapid mass screening of kidneys was conducted with ultrasound for initial detection of renal and the adjacent organ abnormalities in school children and neonates in Taipei area from March 1987 to December 1990. From May 1986 to March 1988, there were 3,622 "new" female clients at the Calgary Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Clinic of whom 2,278 registered for the first time. A cervico-vaginal (Pap) smear was obtained from those who had not had one in the previous 6 to 12 months and any history of venereal warts (VW) was recorded. 621 smears were accessed of which 611 were suitable for inclusion in this study. 65 (10.6%) smears revealed human papillomavirus (HPV) and/or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Breast self-examination (BSE) behavior was analyzed in 89,835 participants in the National Breast Screening Study (NBSS) of whom 64,619 were eligible for annual rescreening and 25,216 were followed by mail after a single screen exam. Evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of the Pediatric Early Elementary Examination (PEEX), a test designed to identify children at risk for learning problems. Using a sample of 299 seven- to nine-year-old "disadvantaged" children, the number of "areas of concern" identified by the PEEX and a school record indicating whether a child was receiving special educational services were used to compute test sensitivity and specificity. A group of 89 prostitutes and 45 patients attending sexually transmitted disease clinics in Mogadishu, Somalia were examined for evidence of HIV infection. Both groups reported more than 1 sexual partner routinely and had sexual contacts with prostitutes. The contribution of parental suspicion in the original identification of a 16 year cohort of 171 children with varying degrees of hearing impairment who were screened and identified in childhood was studied. To evaluate motivational factors for participation in a breast cancer screening program and concurrently to examine beliefs regarding carcinoma of the breast held by those participants, we interviewed 135 consecutive women who took part in an American Cancer Society-sponsored breast screening project in an affluent suburb of Philadelphia. Sudden death in young competitive athletes is most commonly due to underlying cardiovascular disease. Echocardiography has the potential to identify structural cardiovascular abnormalities, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC), that have been incriminated in such events.
