Fibrous dysplasia of bone and concomitant dysplastic changes in the dentin.

Fibrous dysplasia of bone and dentinal dysplasia have not been classified as related conditions. However, the present report describes a patient with both polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and dysplastic changes in the dentin. One bone lesion was first discovered on the right side of the mandible on a routine roentgenogram. There was an atypical radiolucency apical to a short-rooted molar with an obliterated pulp. Additional lesions were found on the left side of the mandible in the maxilla, in the frontal and occipital bones, in the ilium, in the proximal ulnae, and in the ribs. All lesions demon…

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the jaws. Report of a case associated with fibrous dysplasia and review of the literature.

A case of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the mandible, recurring for the third time and arising in conjunction with fibrous dysplasia, is reported. A comprehensive review of the literature and analysis of over 50 cases of ABC of the jaws yielded the following results: ABCs of the jaws constitute 1.5 % of all non-odontogenic and non-epithelial cysts of the jaws, and 1.9 % of all ABCs of the skeleton. The mandible was affected in 55 % of the cases, the maxilla in 45 % of the patients. Females represented 53 % of the patients and males the remaining 47 %. Seventy-four percent of the ABCs occurred …

The odontogenic keratocyst. A clinicopathologic study of 312 cases. Part I. Clinical features.

An analysis was made of the clinical features of 312 acceptable cases of odontogenic keratocysts from the files of the Department of Oral Pathology, Indiana University School of Dentistry. A total of 5.1 per cent of the keratocysts were from patients with the basal-cell nevus syndrome and 5.8 per cent were from patients with multiple keratocysts but with no other features of the syndrome. There was a wide age range, with a peak incidence in the second and third decades of life. The mandible: maxilla ratio was 2:1, with the mandibular third molar area and ramus being the most common sites. Dent…

The effect of custom-made surgical guides for the removal of supernumerary impacted teeth.

BACKGROUND: Digital technology has been applied in the field of oral surgery. In this study, the efficacy of custom-made surgical guides for the removal of supernumerary impacted teeth in the maxilla was investigated. METHODS: The surgical guides were designed with access holes and rods that corresponded to the positions of the impacted teeth and the direction of the approach. The biocompatibility of the 3D-printed materials was first assessed in vitro. The efficacy of the printed surgical guides was evaluated in an in vitro experimental model study performed by 32 oral surgeons on 3D-printed …

Correlation between vitamin D3 serum levels and jaw bone density of candidates for dental implant treatment using CBCT.

BACKGROUND: Little information is available about the effect of vitamin D on jaw bone density, and human studies about this entity are scarc … there was no significant correlation between bone density and vitamin D3 serum levels in either the maxilla or the mandible. CONCLUSION: This study could not find a correlation between the serum levels of vitamin D3 and the bone density of the jaws. Further studies are necessary in this respect.

Morphological and Morphometric Analysis of the Maxillary Nerve in South Indian Cadavers.

INTRODUCTION: The maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve is a purely sensory nerve that originates in the cranial cavity from the trigeminal ganglion. It leaves the cranial cavity through the foramen rotundum to enter the pterygopalatine fossa. The maxillary nerve enters the infraorbital fissure and gives off its zygomatic and posterior superior alveolar branches. METHOD: The cranial cavity, infratemporal, and pterygopalatine fossae of 20 formalin-embalmed human cadavers of South Indian origin were dissected bilaterally to expose the maxillary nerve, and its morphology and morphometric di…

New classification system for osteoradionecrosis of the jaws - An integrative review.

The aim of this paper was to present an overview of the previous published classification and staging systems for osteoradionecrosis (ORN) o … systems only described changes in the mandible. Notably, only one article described changes in the maxilla. No standardised classification or staging system has to our knowledge addressed the complexity of ORN. There is a clear need for a new classification and staging system that enables the monitoring of disease progression, evaluation of treatment out …

CBCT and modern intraoral scanners as tools for developing comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment plans.

The aim of this narrative literature review is to present the possibilities of using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 3D dental scanners to prepare comprehensive, interdisciplinary treatment plans. Scanners are instruments whose usage seems to be a key element of modern digital dentistry. Their importance in orthodontic treatment with overlay appliances, planning modern prosthetic treatments (CAD/CAM) and implantology cannot be overestimated. These scanners allow for accurate imaging of the tooth structures and their positioning independently in the maxilla and mandible as well as in t…

A Fortuitous Finding of Asymptomatic Compound Odontoma Consisting of 156 Denticles on a Routine Radiographic Examination: A Case Report.

UNLABELLED: Odontomas are the most common odontogenic tumors and are classified into compound and complex types. They result from a combination of odontogenic epithelium and ectomesenchyme. Complex odontomas frequently occur in the posterior mandible, whereas compound odontomas are more commonly found in the anterior region of the maxilla. Due to their small size and asymptomatic nature, odontomas are often diagnosed incidentally. Typically, odontomas are <3 cm in diameter; those exceeding this size are classified as giant odontomas and may present with extraoral swelling. This case report doc…

Adolescent Patient's Perceptions During Treatment With Class II Elastics.

The article presents a case of a 13-year-old adolescent male patient who started orthodontic treatment at the age of 12. Before treatment, he was diagnosed with narrow maxilla, proclination of upper incisors, deep overbite, distal occlusion bilaterally with significant sagittal overjet in frontal area, skeletal Class II, and hypodivergent growth pattern. During treatment, the patient is in his pubertal growth spurt. About 2 months after intermaxillary Class II elastics (1/4 heavy, 6.5 Oz) were applied, he complained of pain during mastication, wide opening of the mouth, and sometimes during pr…

Surgical ciliated cyst a newly added entity in WHO classification of head and neck tumours (2022): A case report.

The surgical ciliated cyst is a newly added entity under the cysts of the jaws in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Head and Neck Tumours (2022). It is preceded by a prior surgery to the jaw many years before its diagnosis. A 53-year-old Chinese female, who had undergone cleft lip and palate repair followed by orthognathic surgery before the age of 20, was referred for management of an incidentally found cyst in the left maxilla. A cone-beam computed tomography revealed a unilocular, well-defined radiolucent lesion periapical to tooth 26. A provisional diagnosis of radicula…

Dental age estimation: development and testing of a reference data set for Qatari children, adolescents, and young adults aged between 5 and 25 years.

The purpose of this study is to establish and test a reference data set of dental development of Qatari subjects aged between 5 and 25 years. Radiographs of individuals aged between 5 and 25 years were re-used to establish a reference data set (RDS). A scheme comprising 8 tooth development stages (TDS) was used to assess all the teeth on the left side of the maxilla and mandible. The accuracy of dental age estimation (DAE) was tested with a separate sample of radiographs - the validation sample (VS) comprised 50 females and 50 males of known chronological age (CA). Dental panoramic tomographs …
