Fifty-six men who underwent uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) because of habitual snoring without preoperative obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to respiratory sleep recordings, were interviewed concerning persistent snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). We have investigated a new optical reflectance sensor for pulse oximetry in 70 patients under general anesthesia. The reflectance sensor was applied to the forehead, the dorsal manus, the inguinal region, and the anterior crus of the patients. Selective venous sampling catheterisation was performed in 19 patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma without known distant metastases for persistent hypercalcitoninaemia after surgery. Brain injury causing dysthermia has appeared to be not uncommon in institutionalized people with mental retardation. We sought to determine the characteristics and risks of patients of one institution. Of 1100 residents surveyed over 10 years 92 were reported to have unexplained high or low body temperatures, and 48 were monitored. The existence of diurnal variation in CAPD remains controversial. We therefore attempted to delineate the blood-pressure (BP) pattern in CAPD patients by ambulatory blood-pressure monitoring (ABPM). Initially ABPM was performed in 31 patients (21 M, 10 F), mean age 65.4 years (26-87) using the Spacelabs model 90207. The maximal normal BP preset on the recorder was 140/90 mmHg. Psychological correlates of psychogenic seizures were studied. The MMPI, Portland Digit Recognition Test (PDRT; a forced choice measure of motivation), disability status, Face-Hand Test, and Finger Agnosia were compared in 53 patients with medically intractable seizure disorders who underwent intensive EEG monitoring. The present paper evaluates the efficiency of Nissen fundoplication as an antireflux technique in a series of 51 patients with different grades of esophagitis. Follow-up time averaged 6.6 years. The evaluation includes a clinical assessment, endoscopic study, and 24-hr pH monitoring. Bone marrow was harvested from a 3.95 kg premature 7-week-old female baby for donation to a 13 kg HLA-identical sister with severe aplastic anemia. Two hundred ml of donor bone marrow were aspirated, containing a calculated dose of 3 x 10(8)/kg nucleated bone marrow cells for the recipient. This was equivalent to two-thirds of the donor's calculated blood volume (320 ml).
