Respiratory virus infections in febrile children presenting to a general practice out-of-hours service.

BACKGROUND: Fever is common in young children and is assumed to be frequently caused by viral infections. OBJECTIVES: To document respiratory viruses in children with fever presenting at a general practice out-of-hours service (OHS), evaluate presenting symptoms in febrile children with a virus infection, and examine the association between antibiotic prescription and the presence of a viral infection. METHODS: Nasopharyngeal swabs were obtained to detect respiratory viruses in non-hospitalized children aged ≥ three months to six years presenting with fever at an OHS. Symptoms were assessed

The anatomy of the dog soft palate. III. Histological evaluation of the caudal soft palate in brachycephalic neonates.

A thickened and abnormally long soft palate is mostly involved in the pathogenesis of both nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal narrowing, affecting the respiratory activity in virtually all of the brachycephalic dogs suffering from Brachycephalic Airway Obstructive Syndrome (BAOS). The morphology of the soft palate in adult mesaticephalic and brachycephalic dogs has been previously described. In this article specimens from brachycephalic dog neonates (N=10) dead from one to 3 hr after birth of unrelated conditions were collected and histologically evaluated at three transverse levels to describe

In vitro biocompatibility and cellular interactions of a chitosan/dextran-based hydrogel for postsurgical adhesion prevention.

In this paper, we report the in vitro biocompatibility and cellular interactions of a chitosan/dextran-based (CD) hydrogel and its components as determined by mutagenicity, cytotoxicity, cytokine/chemokine response, and wound healing assays. The CD hydrogel, developed for postsurgical adhesion prevention in ear, nose, and throat surgeries, was shown by previously published experiments in animal and human trials to be effective. The hydrogel was synthesized from the reaction between succinyl chitosan (SC) and oxidized dextran (DA). Cytotoxicity was assessed in an xCELLigence system and cytokine

[Chlamydia trachomaatis DNA in leukocytes of peripheral blood from neonates].

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in newborns is difficult; however, this diagnosis is performed by cell culture or by detection of IgM antibodies against C. trachomatis. Detection of C. trachomatis DNA in peripheral blood leukocytes using polymer chain reaction (PCR) may be a better tool for the diagnosis of infection by this pathogen. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 44 premature newborns, all weighing less than 2500g, were included in the study. A blood sample and nasopharyngeal lavages were obtained from each newborn. Leukocyte DNA was obtained by phenol-chlorofor

Prevalence of human metapneumovirus in children with acute lower respiratory infection in Changsha, China.

Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) causes acute respiratory infections in children. The prevalence and clinical characteristics of hMPV were determined in nasopharyngeal aspirates of children in Changsha, China. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) or PCR was employed to screen for both hMPV and other common respiratory viruses in 1,165 nasopharyngeal aspirate specimens collected from children with lower respiratory tract infections from September 2007 to August 2008. All PCR products were sequenced, and demographic and clinical data were collected from all patients. Seventy-six

A novel protocol for three-dimensional reconstruction of pharyngeal airway on computed tomography.

Three-dimensional measurement of the pharyngeal airway has been widely used, but the three-dimensional reconstruction of pharyngeal airway has been performed in various ways, especially during the anterior boundary demarcation of the nasopharyngeal airway and oropharyngeal airway. This would inevitably affect the measurement and lead to noncomparison between different studies. Our study provided a novel method for anterior boundary demarcation of pharyngeal airway that defined the anterior boundary of nasopharyngeal airway as the "choana" according to the anatomical definition and defined the

[Minimally invasive surgery for cancer arising in a reconstructed gastric tube after esophagectomy based on evaluation of blood and lymphatic flow by indocyanine green fluorescence imaging].

A 69-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for treatment of gastric tube cancer detected by screening upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Seven years previously, he had undergone subtotal esophagectomy for esophageal cancer with gastric pull-up via the retrosternal route. Contrast study revealed a filling defect in the distal part of the reconstructed gastric tube. Nasopharyngeal cancer was detected at the same time. After chemoradiotherapy for nasopharyngeal cancer, surgery was performed for gastric tube cancer. Because the radiation field included the anastomotic site of the pervious surge

[Vascular tumors of the nasal cavities: a retrospective study of 10 cases].

UNLABELLED: Vascular tumors of the sinus cavities are rarely documented in the literature. They are characterized by a histological diversity. They can be benign or malignant. The most common histologic type is the hemangioma. Their management is not well codified, it benefited from advances in modern imaging and endoscopic surgery. The objective of the work is to study anatomical and clinical characteristics, therapeutic and outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The observations of 10 vascular tumors of the nasal cavities collected between January 2009 and July 2011 were studied retrospectively. Th

Viral-bacterial co-infection in Australian Indigenous children with acute otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media with perforation (AOMwiP) affects 40% of remote Indigenous children during the first 18 months of life. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis are the primary bacterial pathogens of otitis media and their loads predict clinical ear state. Our hypothesis is that antecedent respiratory viral infection increases bacterial density and progression to perforation. METHODS: A total of 366 nasopharyngeal swabs from 114 Indigenous children were retrospectively examined. A panel of 17 respiratory viruses was screened by PCR, and densiti

Macrophage involvement in Epstein-Barr virus-related tumors.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is known as a causative agent of Burkitt's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and approximately 10% of stomach carcinoma cases. In other human cancers, EBV gene expression including lytic infection protein detected using in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence staining has been reported. Moreover, the expression and replication of EBV genes in cultured normal macrophages and in histiocytes of Langerhans' cell histiocytosis have been identified. The aim of this study was to examine EBV expression in macrophages in other EBV-associated human tumors. Forty-one cases

OPCML is a broad tumor suppressor for multiple carcinomas and lymphomas with frequently epigenetic inactivation.

BACKGROUND: Identification of tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) silenced by CpG methylation uncovers the molecular mechanism of tumorigenesis and potential tumor biomarkers. Loss of heterozygosity at 11q25 is common in multiple tumors including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). OPCML, located at 11q25, is one of the downregulated genes we identified through digital expression subtraction. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed frequent OPCML silencing in NPC and other common tumors, with no homozygous deletion detected by multiplex differential DNA-PCR. Instead, promoter me

Laboratory assays for Epstein-Barr virus-related disease.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infects various cell types in a wide spectrum of benign and malignant diseases. Laboratory tests for EBV have improved and are increasingly used in diagnosis, prognosis, prediction, and prevention of diseases ranging from infectious mononucleosis to selected subtypes of lymphoma, sarcoma, and carcinoma. Indeed, the presence of EBV is among the most effective tumor markers supporting clinical management of cancer patients. In biopsies, localization of EBER transcripts by in situ hybridization remains the gold standard for identifying latent infection. Other RNA- and pro

Search for Herpesvirus 1 and 2 by in situ hybridization in tonsils and adenoids.

OBJECTIVE: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) has been described as cause of acute tonsillitis. It has also been found in nasopharyngeal florid lymphoid infiltrate, mostly composed of CD4+, CD56+ T-cells, simulating lymphoma. In spite of its widespread prevalence in latent form, to the best of our knowledge no study is available on in situ detection of HSV in chronically hyperplastic nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissue. The purpose of the present study was to search for the presence of HSV 1 and 2 in 21 adenoids and 15 tonsils from children (2-12 years of age) in which these organs had been surgically remo

Immunotherapy for Epstein-Barr virus-associated cancers in children.

Latent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is associated with several malignancies, including Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (LPD). The presence of EBV antigens in these tumors provides a target for immunotherapy approaches, and immunotherapy with EBV-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) has proved effective in post-transplant LPDs, which are highly immunogenic tumors expressing type III latency. The malignant cells in Hodgkin's disease and nasopharyngeal carcinoma express type II latency and hence a more restricted

The microbial ecology and immunology of the adenoid: implications for otitis media.

The nasopharyngeal tonsil, or adenoid, is a major inductive site for the synthesis of J-chain-positive B cells that may migrate to other areas of the upper respiratory tract, such as the nasal mucosa, the parotid gland, the lacrimal gland, and the middle ear during inflammation. The production of secretory IgA by both the nasopharyngeal tonsil and the nasal mucosa plays a major role in local immune protection against bacteria and viruses. The release of cytokines from Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes must be appropriate for B cells to produce IgA. The factors or mechanisms responsible for this are not,
