Results of removal of a transparent lens in high myopia are analyzed. The operation was performed in two stages according to V. S. Belyaev and T. S. Ilyina. The second stage of the operation (lens extraction) was performed by the extracapsular method, which prevented vitreous prolapse into the anterior chamber in all cases and ruled out the possibility of detachment of the posterior plate of the vitreous and retina. Albinism represents the most frequent cause of nystagmus induced by visual sensory disorders. We studied five patients aged between three and five years with ocular albinism with the aim of identifying the characteristics of nystagmic oscillations. Eye complications were studied in 240 cases of atopic dermatitis (age distribution 9 months to 40 years) hospitalized in the dermatology ward of our hospital. One hundred and thirty-four patients (55.8%) had at least one eye complication. Allergic conjunctivitis, cataracts, vernal conjunctivitis, retinal detachment, keratoconus, and retinal tears were detected in 28.3%, 17.9%, 2.1%, 1.3%, 1.3%, and 0.8%, respectively. Serum IgE levels and eye complications did not correlate. Routine ophthalmological examinations are recommended for patients with atopic dermatitis.

This study was performed in order to verify the prevalence of retinal periphlebitis and other ocular changes in a well-defined population of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, and to correlate the presence of these features with some clinical variables which characterize the disease. 110 MS-affected subjects were submitted to a standard ophthalmologic examination including a biomicroscopical evaluation of the fundus oculi. Whipple's disease, a chronic systemic and multi-organ disease can be associated with ophthalmological manifestations with or without CNS involvement. Myositis rarely occurs during Whipple's disease. Antibiotic treatment prevents CNS recurrence. We report here the association of an orbital pseudotumor with Whipple's disease. This myositis was discovered on a follow-up CT examination. It appeared only one year after the end of a long course of antibiotic treatment, but it resolved within a few weeks when treatment was reintroduced. Relations between these two diseases are discussed.

From 1973 to 1980, 727 patients with facial fractures received formal ophthalmologic consultation. The series included 174 mandible fractures, 29 nasal fractures, 436 midfacial fractures, and 88 frontal fractures. Of these, a total of 67% sustained some degree of ocular injuries. Seventy-nine percent of the eye injuries were categorized as temporary, 18% were serious, and 3% were blinding. Of the mandibular fractures, 29% had ocular injuries, 59% nasal fractures, 59% midfacial fractures, and 89% frontal fractures.

Thirty-eight children with signs of hydrocephalus have been tested for toxoplasmosis. On the basis of clinical data, including roentgenographical and ophthalmological findings, and serological data (Sabin-Feldman and IgM-IFA tests), congenital toxoplasmosis was confirmed in 15 (39%) infants. The diagnosis was established by demonstration of the persistence of Toxoplasma antibodies. In 13 (34%) infants aged 1 to 3 months there was not enough serological data and these were placed in a group of cases with "suspected congenital toxoplasmosis." In a randomized clinical study, 32 patients with Sögren's syndrome (SS were given placebo/bromhexine (Bisolvon) 48 mg daily for 3 weeks. Various ophthalmological and oral variables as well as different proteins in the tear fluid and saliva were registered. Bromhexine stimulated the tear secretion significantly, presumable without changing the protein composition of the tear fluid. In contrast to other proteins in saliva the IgM concentration decreased in patients with high pre-treatment values. Bromhexine may be of valuable help in the treatment of some patients with SS.

The importance of carrying out a preliminary examination of vision and eye movements in all handicapped is stressed. In any case of doubt a full ophthalmological and orthoptic examination is essential and is best carried out in the congenial environs of a District Handicap Centre. Eight hundred and ninety-three children with a wide variety of handicaps were seen at the Leeds Regional Child Assessment Centre between 1972 and 1977, and 324 were found to have a visual or visuomotor defect. The types of defects are discussed under headings which describe the main handicap.

To determine the hereditary and clinical patterns, nine patients from three families with different systemic and ocular rheumatoid diseases were examined ophthalmologically and medically. Three types of HLA-B27 associated anterior uveitis were seen. While HLA-B27 linked genes predispose the carrier to acute anterior uveitis (AAU) frequently recurring or chronic anterior uveitis may develop if an immune-complex disease such as Rheumatoid arthritis coexists. Hereditary factors may dispose patients to rheumatoid episcleritis, scleritis and keratitis.
