Fusobacterium species, particularly Fusobacterium nucleatum, are anaerobic gram-negative bacteria found in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. Infections caused by these organisms exhibit diverse clinical manifestations. Here we report a rare case of orbital abscess caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum, which was initially misdiagnosed as Tolosa-Hunt syndrome. The patient was controlled conservatively, and surgical intervention was withheld due to poor prognosis, diabetes, and logistical limitations. This case report highlights the need to consider infection even when imaging and laborato

INTRODUCTION: Benign tumors account for 64-68 % of orbital tumors, with a wide variety of etiologies. The indication for surgical resection of a benign tumor is not systematic and depends mainly on the functional and esthetic clinical consequences. Surgical management presents risk of serious complications which can lead to major functional disorders and even blindness. The aim of this review is to identify the potential predictive factors of complications in benign orbital tumor surgery and assist therapeutic decision-making.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic review was performed, by search

Prostaglandin analogues have a pivotal role in the management of glaucoma by effectively lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) and slowing disease progression. This study explores the complex case of an 81-year-old female with primary open-angle glaucoma, initially treated with travoprost. Despite controlled IOP, her visual fields deteriorated, particularly in the left eye. Investigations included sleep apnea tests, anemia blood tests, and orbital MRI, revealing optic nerve kinking. This case highlights the complex nature of glaucoma management, emphasizing the impact of mechanical stress on the

Forced duction testing (FDT) is a diagnostic clinical test of extraocular muscle function employed to confirm the mechanical and restrictive nature of a patient's defective upgaze. Orbital floor blowout fractures (OFBFs) may lead to bony entrapment of the inferior orbital muscles and connective tissue, resulting in restricted vertical gaze and early or late enophthalmos. Management of OFBFs aims to restore normal ocular anatomy and physiology and may require definitive surgical intervention if there is significant entrapment and large fractures. The authors report a 19-year-old man with a smal

Common ocular manifestations of Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) include conjunctivitis, keratitis, anterior uveitis and ocular hypertension. Immunosuppressed patients are at an increased risk of sequelae including orbital inflammation and meningitis. We present a case of a 47-year-old immunocompetent patient who presented with acute orbital inflammation and viral meningitis, on a background of recent HZO without ocular involvement. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated enhancement and enlargement of the left extraocular muscles, lacrimal gland and optic nerve sheath and enhancement of

UNLABELLED: Conidiobolomycosis is a rare tropical mycosis that is often difficult to diagnose and treat.
METHOD: We describe here an imported case that highlights these issues.
RESULTS: A 24-year-old HIV positive patient was diagnosed and treated for a conidiobolomycosis due to Conidiobolus coronatus. Imaging showed extensive facial invasion. Biopsy and fungal culture confirmed conidiobolomycosis, resistant to standard antifungals. Initial therapy with liposomal amphotericin B and itraconazole failed due to drug interactions. After adjusting treatment and performing surgery, the patient's co

This retrospective case series describes a transorbital endoscopic approach to perform an excision of the frontal nerve branch of the ophthalmic nerve. This was performed for suspected zone 1 perineural spread (PNS) secondary to squamous cell carcinoma. Four patients were identified for inclusion. All were male with a mean age of 76 years (range: 65-81 years). Three patients had histological confirmation of neoplastic nerve infiltration from squamous cell carcinoma. One patient with corneal paraesthesia and radiological frontal nerve enlargement had no histological evidence of PNS. Postoperati

Paediatric orbital lesions encompass a wide spectrum of benign and malignant entities that can arise from different components of the orbit. Clinical symptoms and signs are often nonspecific, and imaging plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and management. Ultrasonography has a limited role and radiation is a major concern with CT especially in the paediatric population. MRI is the modality of choice that avoids the radiation hazard and provides superior soft tissue contrast. The lesions can be localized using the 'compartment' approach which helps to narrow the list of differentials. MRI als

The recent acceleration of commercial, private and multi-national spaceflight has created an unprecedented level of activity in low Earth orbit, concomitant with the largest-ever number of crewed missions entering space and preparations for exploration-class (lasting longer than one year) missions. Such rapid advancement into space from many new companies, countries and space-related entities has enabled a 'second space age'. This era is also poised to leverage, for the first time, modern tools and methods of molecular biology and precision medicine, thus enabling precision aerospace medicine

PURPOSE: The conventional method to reconstruct the bone level for orbital defects, which is based on mirroring and manual adaptation, is time-consuming and the accuracy highly depends on the expertise of the clinical engineer. The aim of this study is to propose and evaluate an automated reconstruction method utilizing a Gaussian process morphable model (GPMM).
METHODS: Sixty-five Computed Tomography (CT) scans of healthy midfaces were used to create a GPMM that can model shape variations of the orbital region. Parameter optimization was performed by evaluating several quantitative metrics i

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the orbit is an exceedingly rare entity. These tumors exhibit locally aggressive behavior, recurrences, distant metastasis, and poor response to existing treatment protocols. Orbital nerve sheath tumors are often associated with neurofibromatosis 1, and malignant transformation of neurofibroma into malignant nerve sheath tumor has also been seen. The recommended treatment for localized disease is radical or wide surgical excision to achieve negative margins followed by chemoradiation. For extensive disease, chemotherapy and radiotherapy can be utilize

A 5-year-old boy presented for evaluation of an intermittent lesion in the left forehead that, per history from his mother, enlarged when the child slept on his right side. On clinical exam, although there were no notable findings with the child in the upright position, fullness and an enlarging mass when the child was placed on his right side could be reproduced. A diagnosis of a venous varix was suspected. Under sedation, a routine Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the orbits without and with intravenous contrast in the supine position and an axial T1 post-contrast in the right lateral decubitus
