Effect of facial divergence and other biological factors on anchorage control and overbite in extraction cases.

OBJECTIVES: To compare and quantify anchorage loss during space closure following premolar extraction in matched groups of different facial types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Variables such as facial divergency, age, sex, and crowding were considered for cephalometric analysis. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the strength of the relationship between anchorage loss and facial divergence. Multiple regression analyses were used to investigate the factors associated with variability of anchorage loss. RESULTS: Average treatment duration was 41.90 ± 12.97 months. The mean ancho

Clinical outcome of maxillary arch expansion with clear aligners in mixed dentition: A systematic review.

Maxillary transverse deficiency, affecting approximately 21% of patients in the mixed dentition stage, represents a common skeletal discrepancy in orthodontics. Clear aligners have demonstrated efficacy in achieving maxillary arch expansion, alleviating crowding, and meeting orthodontic treatment objectives. This review aims to systematically evaluate and synthesize the available evidence on the clinical outcomes of maxillary arch expansion using clear aligners in the mixed dentition period. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024542510) and the review followed Preferred Reporting It…

Comparative evaluation of vertical dimension changes with clear aligners and fixed appliances: A prospective cephalometric cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The control of vertical dimension remains a critical aspect of comprehensive orthodontic treatment. This study compared vertical dimensional changes produced by clear aligners (CAs) to those produced by fixed appliances (FAs) during comprehensive orthodontic treatment, assessing whether modern aligner therapy provides comparable vertical control with conventional mechanics. METHODS: A prospective cohort of 52 adults (CA group: 26 and FA group: 26) was evaluated. Baseline comparability was confirmed for age, sex, malocclusion type, and skeletal pattern. Standardized lateral cephalo

Treatment stability with bonded versus vacuum-formed retainers after 12 months: A randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effectiveness of V-bend bonded retainers (BR) versus vacuum-formed retainers (VFR) regarding their capacity to maintain treatment stability and survival rates after 12 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients finishing orthodontic treatment were randomly allocated into two groups. The BR group received maxillary and mandibular BRs in the lingual surfaces of the anterior teeth. The VFR group received VFRs right after fixed appliances removal. The patients were evaluated at four time-points: at fixed appliances removal (T0), after 3 (T1), 6 (T2) and 12 months (

Mini-implant-supported twin-block appliance: An innovative modification.

Twin block is a commonly used appliance for correction of retrognathic mandible in growing patients. However, it has a drawback of causing lower incisor proclination, which reduces its potential of achieving maximum skeletal effects. Thus, we introduced a novel modification in the present design to facilitate greater anteroposterior effects in skeletal dimension. The aim of the present case reports is to evaluate the efficacy of this modified twin block. Here we present two cases treated with mini-implant-supported twin-block appliance, which successfully controlled the lower incisor position,

Scleroderma: a case report of possible cause of restricted movement of the temporomandibular joint with effects on facial development.

Scleroderma is a rare abnormality in which fibrosis of the skin, subcutaneous tissues and muscle may occur. All forms of scleroderma are rare in childhood: the most common form is localized scleroderma. Localized scleroderma is often benign, but may cause significant deformity, if it occurs on the face or extends across joint surfaces. Structural changes may occur in the osseous tissue and result in mandibular joint restriction (pseudoankylosis) and facial and occlusal disharmonies. This article describes a case of facial linear scleroderma in a nine-year-old child and the treatment performed

Quadhelix appliance therapy resulting in pyogenic granuloma of the tongue.

This paper describes the examination, diagnosis and treatment of a rapidly enlarging tongue mass presenting in a healthy 12-year-old girl. This mass caused distress to both the patient and her parents and diagnostic uncertainty for her general medical and dental practitioners. The lesion was in fact caused by an orthodontic quadhelix appliance and responded to simple treatment.

Posterior crossbites in children.

Posterior crossbite, the most common malocclusion in young children, can be caused by a variety of skeletal, muscular, or dental factors. This condition produces insufficient maxillary arch width and is frequently associated with various oral sucking and postural habits. If left untreated, this problem can result in adverse skeletal growth changes. Various mechanical treatment modalities designed to expand the posterior maxillary arch width are available to correct this problem. The appropriate treatment method depends on the patient's age and level of cooperation as well as the determined eti

[Joint treatment of patients with clefts by orthodontists and logopedists].

Close cooperation between speech pathologist and orthodontist in management of CLP cases is described. Preoperative treatment aims at maintenance of initially favorable maxillary relations and compensation for imbalance of the oral musculature. Knowledge of growth and speech development is decisive for timing of primary surgery (lip about 6 months, soft palate about 18 months, hard palate 5 to 7 years). Speech assessment starts at age 2-2 1/2, followed by team controls once or twice a year with proper coaching of parents. Actual speech therapy is not stared before age 5. The approach described
