Pediatric movement disorders (PMD) neurologists care for infants, children, and adolescents with conditions that disrupt typical movement; serving as important subspecialist child neurologists in both academic and private practice settings. In contrast to adult movement disorders neurologists whose "bread and butter" is hypokinetic Parkinson disease, PMD subspecialty practice is often dominated by hyperkinetic movement disorders including tics, dystonia, chorea, tremor, and myoclonus. PMD neurology practice intersects with a variety of subspecialties, including neonatology, developmental pedia

Ellis-van Creveld (EVC) syndrome is a rare inherited condition with inheritance, which is autosomal recessive in nature and is also described as skeletal dysplasia (chondroectodermal). The patients present with a grave genu valgum deformity which is a major challenge in orthopedics. The current case report presents a young girl of the juvenile age group who came with deformity over the bilateral lower limb with difficulty in walking and bilateral upper limb polydactyly. The patient underwent relevant investigations and examinations which were suggestive of bilateral genu valgum deformity. Sinc

Development of bioactive bone and joint implants that offer superior mechanical properties to facilitate personalized surgical procedures remains challenging in the field of biomedical materials. As for the hydrogel, mechanical property and processability are major obstructions hampering its application as load-bearing scaffolds in orthopedics. Herein, we constructed implantable composite hydrogels with appealing processability and ultrahigh stiffness. Central to our design is the incorporation of a thixotropic composite network into an elastic polymer network via dynamic interactions to synth

Meniscus tears are a common orthopedic pathology and planning a single, effective treatment is challenging. The diagnosis of meniscal tears requires detailed history-taking, physical examinations, special diagnostic tests, and most likely magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to confirm the lesion. A good understanding of the meniscal structure including vascularity, zones, function, and affected movements with associated symptoms plays a crucial role in establishing an optimal management plan. A careful assessment of the patient's characteristics, comorbidities, post-repair rehabilitation, and pat

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication of orthopedic arthroplasty surgery. Rat bite fever is a rare infection with Streptobacillus moniliformis (S. moniliformis). Rat bite fever can lead to serious complications such as pyogenic infection of joints, bacteremia, endocarditis and even death. We hereby present the first case of a patient with a total knee arthroplasty, infected with S. moniliformis, successfully treated by surgical debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR).
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was a 64-year-old female. S. moniliformis wa

Differential diagnosis of tumor processes in orthopedics is a relatively broad and inherently very serious issue, especially if the patients are pediatric patients. A number of examination procedures is used in diagnostics, together with a wide range of complementary laboratory and imaging methods. However, the clinical examination, including the collected anamnestic data, remains to be the cornerstone. In pediatric patients, of major importance is the cooperation with parents, but not always necessary information is provided to make the final diagnosis. In younger children, it is very often i

Technological development of motion and posture analyses is rapidly progressing, especially in rehabilitation settings and sport biomechanics. Consequently, clear discrimination among different measurement systems is required to diversify their use as needed. This review aims to resume the currently used motion and posture analysis systems, clarify and suggest the appropriate approaches suitable for specific cases or contexts. The currently gold standard systems of motion analysis, widely used in clinical settings, present several limitations related to marker placement or long procedure time.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify trends in medical malpractice litigation related to intraoperative neuromonitoring.
METHODS: The Westlaw Edge legal research service was queried for malpractice litigation related to neuromonitoring in spine surgery. Cases were reviewed to determine if the plaintiff's assertion of negligence was due to either failure to use neuromonitoring or negligent monitoring. Comparative statistics and a detailed qualitative analysis of the resulting cases were performed.
RESULTS: Twenty-six cases related to neuromonitoring were identified. Spinal fusion

INTRODUCTION: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is an invasive procedure used in critically ill patients with catastrophic pulmonary failure or cardiogenic shock in which conventional management has failed. These patients are managed with permanent anticoagulation, with increased bleeding risk. Hemorrhage is the main reported complication.
CASE: A 25-year-old polytraumatized woman, both lower limbs amputated and a left femoral shaft fracture with catastrophic pulmonary failure (Murray score 4) that required intensive management care with ECMO. During her evolution definitive femoral

The authors report their experience in the management of a 53-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who presented with bilateral asynchronous traumatic periprosthetic fractures of the humerus after bilateral elbow replacements. One side was treated with a long-stem revision and internal fixation with bone graft, while the other side was treated with a long-stem distal humeral replacement. She sustained pathological periprosthetic fractures on top of the long-stemmed implants. Total humeral endoprosthesis replacements were performed bilaterally as salvage procedures to provide a stable platf

Among about 400 patients with active arthritis and/or enthesitis who were referred to our department within the last two years, 140 of them were strongly suspected as having psoriatic arthritis by a comprehensive diagnostic procedure and after consulting specialists from dermatology, orthopedics, and radiodiagnostics at our institution and other institutions. Among them, 115 patients strictly met the classification criteria for psoriatic arthritis (CASPAR). Among the 115 patients, 19 patients (9 males and 10 females) had current psoriasis and 96 patients (22 males and 74 females) did not have

OBJECTIVE: Autograft bone obtained from the iliac crest remains the "gold standard" for spinal fusion. For various reasons, including previous harvesting or pelvic dysmorphism, the iliac crest bone graft may not be available to the spinal surgeon. We present a novel use of a common orthopedic procedure, intramedullary reaming, for obtaining autograft for revision spinal fusion.
METHODS: A 47-year-old woman presented with failed back syndrome after multiple lumbar surgeries with previous bilateral iliac crest bone harvest. A commercially available reaming system (Synthes Reamer-Irrigator-Aspir

Arithmetic skills and their cognitive correlates were studied in 24 children with myelomeningocele and shunted hydrocephalus (MM), 27 children with severe traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and 26 children with orthopedic injuries (OI). Their average age was 11.56 years (SD = 2.36). They completed the WRAT-3 Arithmetic subtest and a subtraction task consisting of 20 problems of varying difficulty, as well as measures of working memory, declarative memory, processing speed, planning skills, and visuospatial abilities. The MM group performed more poorly on the WRAT-3 Arithmetic subtest and the subt

Total joint replacement is a common orthopedic procedure. An artificial joint implant may fail due to mechanical mishap and a granulomatous reaction can be induced by the artificial joint debris after the mechanical failure. We report a case of an exaggerated pigmented granulomatous tissue response to metallic artificial joint implant debris in a 72-yr-old male that was mistaken for metastatic melanoma. The mass was soft, pigmented, ill-defined, and located in the right inguinal region. Fine-needle aspiration revealed numerous black-pigment laden cells. The cellular features were frequently ob

The benign fibrous histiocytoma is a rare tumor with only a few descriptions. In order to better define the optimal therapeutic procedure and the necessity of surgery we retrospectively analyzed the patients of the orthopedic department. Benign fibrous histiocytoma occurred in the femur (n = 3), pelvis (n = 2), humerus, tibia, fibula, rib and spine. Pain as the cardinal symptom and a median age of 28 years are factors that differentiate benign fibrous histiocytoma from other metaphyseal fibrous lesions such as the nonossifying fibroma. Radiographic investigation of this entity showed osteolyti

The disposition of d-tubocurarine (dTc) was assessed when a bolus and infusion dosage regimen was used to obtain relaxation during major orthopedic surgery on the spine. Renal clearance of dTc was 0.63 +/- 0.23 ml X min-1 X kg-1 and was correlated with creatinine clearance. Total plasma clearance of 1.21 +/- 0.40 ml X min X -1 X kg-1 was lower than that found in many previous studies, and the predetermined continuous dTc infusion produced an apparent plateau in plasma concentrations of 1.8 +/- 0.3 micrograms X ml-1. Despite the operative blood loss, these concentrations were greater than antic
