Introduction: Goldmann Favre Syndrome (GFS) is a vitreoretinal degenerative disease with macular retinoschisis. The current treatment of foveoschisis is topical and oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.Case: A 22-year-old male diagnosed with GFS presented a progressive decrease in vision of the right eye. The optical coherence tomography showed a significant macular schisis. A medical treatment with topical and oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors was ineffective. We performed a pars plana vitrectomy and silicone oil placement which led to an improvement of the visual acuity and a reduction of the

Ocular manifestations of syphilis with visual impairment symptoms may occur already at the stage of secondary syphilis. They may also be the only manifestation of syphilis and mimic other diseases of the eye. Therefore, in all patients with uveitis, optic neuritis, optic atrophy, acute ocular muscle paresis, or loss of visual acuity, syphilis infection should be ruled out, even if the medical history does not initially raise suspicion. Ocular involvement should be treated as neurosyphilis. Delayed diagnosis and inadequate therapy are often associated with irreversible consequences for the affe

This 46-year-old female patient presented after a 6-month progressive right-sided visual loss, with a visual acuity of 20/60, a temporo/infranasal visual field deficit, and optic atrophy. The magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a tuberculum sella meningioma with minimal right medial canal invasion, however, no encasement of carotid arteries. Tuberculum sella meningiomas represent 5%-10% of intracranial meningiomas and are surgically challenging tumors that can severely hinder vision. The endoscopic approach allows for early coagulation of the tumor meningeal supply, and importantly, facilitat

We report a rare case of dematiaceous fungus colonization in the therapeutic bandage contact lens (BCL), in an eye with peripheral ulcerative keratitis. Bandage contact lens removal and appropriate treatment resulted in improvement of the visual acuity and prevented the spread of fungus to the underlying ocular structures. Microbiological evaluation of the BCL showed dematiaceous fungal filaments, and the fungus was identified as Bipolaris species. In patients with pigmented plaque-like lesions, with BCL in situ, dematiaceous fungus on the undersurface of the BCL should be kept in mind. Patien

A 51-year-old Asian Indian male with right oculodermal melanocytosis presented with a blurred visual acuity of 20/40. Upon fundus examination, he was discovered to have two independent pigmented choroidal melanomas in the temporal juxtapapillary region and inferiorly, in the region of trace clinical sectoral choroidal melanocytosis. The patient underwent enucleation, and on histopathology the two tumors were found to be in the area of choroidal melanocytosis, in continuity with each other. Multifocal choroidal melanoma is an exceedingly rare diagnosis. Ocular melanocytosis is a known predispos

Epiretinal membrane over macula secondary to toxoplasmosis compromises vision. We describe the outcome of pars plana vitrectomy and epiretinal membrane removal after adequate treatment of acute infection. The average age of all four male patients was 36 years (range 20-60 years). Following surgery there was an average three or more lines visual acuity improvement, restoration of foveal contour with reduction in central macular thickness. One patient developed choroidal neovascular membrane postsurgery and was effectively treated with intravitreal bevacizumab. Surgery for ERM secondary to heale

This case report discusses the rare association of cerebral abscess related to conjunctivitis in an otherwise healthy child. A 6 year old boy presented with conjunctivitis was treated with topical antibiotics and resolved after a week. Conjunctival swab cultures grew MRSA. A month later he developed status epileptics and CT scans revealed a large cerebral abscess. He was treated with intravenous antibiotics which covered for MRSA, along with an incision and drainage for the cerebral abscess. Pus cultures grew MRSA. The patient recovered well with no disturbance in visual acuity or visual field

We report the case of a 9-year-old girl who presented for a routine change of glasses. On slit-lamp examination, no abnormality was detected; however, dilated fundus examination revealed profuse myelination of the retinal nerves around the disk of the right eye along with an optic disk pit inferotemporally. The left eye fundus also had an optic disk pit inferotemporally but no associated myelination. Visual acuity was 6/9 in each eye, and the patient had no other ocular or systemic complaints. To our knowledge, cooccurrence of myelinated retinal nerves and optic disk pits in the same eye, has

CLINICAL CASE: A five-year-old patient, with a diagnosis of long-chain 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, was referred for an ophthalmological examination. He had a history of acute metabolic crises precipitated by intercurrent infections,as well as rhabdomyolysis. The fundoscopic examination revealed a peripapillary chorioretinal atrophy and a diffuse granular appearance of the macular retinal pigment epithelium. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/6 in both eyes, and he had a normal electroretinography test.
DISCUSSION: We perform a review of the literature and recent findings in re

A 20-year-old woman presented with headache, decreased vision, eye pain, and urinary retention. During her clinical course, visual acuity declined to 20/800, right eye, and 20/50, left eye, associated with bilateral optic disc edema. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed enhancement of the leptomeninges, right optic nerve, and right side of the optic chiasm. Extensive evaluation of the central nervous system (CNS) for an infectious cause was negative. Brain biopsy showed a pattern consistent with vasculitis. The patient was treated with prednisone and cyclophosphamide, resulting in improve

Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetically heterogeneous disorder with an estimated prevalence of one in 4,000 that is classically characterized by the progressive constriction of peripheral vision and a later deterioration of visual acuity. Central vision can be compromised earlier in disease, however, in the approximately 25% of patients that have cystoid macular edema. This poorly understood problem can thus significantly impair patient quality of life, particularly as available treatments have limited efficacy. We will review clinical features of retinitis pigmentosa-associated cystoid macular

The extraocular muscle palsies associated with herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) are transient, self-limiting conditions, usually seen in elderly patients. There are different treatment recommendations for paralytic complications, but prognosis has generally reported to be favorable. A 75-year-old male patient presented with diplopia. Clinical history revealed left facial vesicular eruptions and pain treated by oral aciclovir 1 week following symptom onset. On examination, we observed cicatricial lesions with crusts involving left hemiface, a limitation in abduction of the left eye, and a super

In this paper, a posterior uveitis case was reported in a patient who was being followed and under treatment for Ankylosing Spondylitis. Toxoplasma antibodies were investigated and anti-toxoplasma IgG was positive. Systematic treatment (Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim and Clindamycin) was started. Despite medical treatment, reduction in visual acuity and development of dense membranous condensation in vitreous occurred. Surgical vitrectomy was performed. When posterior uveitis develops in patients who undergo immunosuppressive treatment, toxoplasma is among the first infectious agents that we sh

A 42-year-old man presented with fever, headache and liver dysfunction, and was diagnosed as having aseptic meningitis by lumbar puncture. The PCR detected Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-DNA in the peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid. About 20 days after onset, the patient presented with hearing impairment in the right ear, which was confirmed by a pure tone audiogram. The hearing acuity improved after the initiation of hydrocortisone sodium phosphate. We presume that the hearing impairment was due to auditory nerve neuritis related to extension of inflammation of the meninges. This is the firs

X-linked ocular albinism (OA1) is the most common form of ocular albinism. Affected males are characterized by nystagmus, impaired visual acuity, iris hypopigmentation with translucency, fundus hypopigmentation, macular hypoplasia, and normally pigmented skin and hair. However, OA1 has rarely been reported in China. Here, we report on a Chinese family with OA1 and partial deletion of GPR143. An unusual phenotype of iris hyperpigmentation without translucency was observed in the male patient and the carrier mother. There was apparent mosaic pigmentation of the fundus. Our results demonstrate at

CASE REPORT: The case of a 64-year-old patient with bilateral, progressive and painless diminution of visual acuity is presented. Ophthalmologic evaluation revealed optic neuritis and vitreous cells in both eyes, at different stages. Suspecting a paraneoplastic optic neuritis, the study of antibodies was requested. This showed positivity to the marker CRMP-5-IgG. After mediastinoscopy, a small cell lung carcinoma was diagnosed.
DISCUSSION: Autoantibody CRMP-5-IgG defines a paraneoplastic entity of combined optic neuritis and vitreous inflammatory cells. The serological positivity avoids the v

We report optical coherence tomography-3 (OCT-3) of retinal disorders in acute preeclampsia. A 33-year-old woman developed mind hypertension (170/90 mm Hg) and proteinuria in the 28th week of pregnancy. The patient complained of sudden and severe visual acuity decrease. Fundus exam showed bilateral serous retinal detachment at the macula area. OCT-3 exam demonstrated subretinal and intraretinal fluid. Bilateral serous retinal detachment is an unusual finding of preeclampsia of unknown aetiology. Intense arteriolar vasospasm has been implicated in the pathogenesis of the serous retinal detachme
