Cutoff Points for Commonly Used Instruments to Assess Mental Health Problems Among Adults With Tourette's Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety are highly comorbid in Tourette's syndrome. Cutoff points of screening instruments for these conditions have been validated in the general population. The authors assessed whether established cutoff points on the General Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale; Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9); PHQ-2; Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale, version 1.1 (ASRS v1.1); and Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (OCI) need to be adjusted for adults with Tourette's syndrome. METHODS: Thirty-six adults with Tour

The higher the household income, the lower the possibility of depression and anxiety disorder: evidence from a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

OBJECTIVES: Observational studies have demonstrated that household income is associated with morbidity of mental disorders. However, a causal relationship between the two factors remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated the causal relationship between household income status and genetic liability of mental disorders using a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) study. METHODS: This MR study included a large cohort of the European population from publicly available genome-wide association study datasets. A random-effects inverse-variance weighting model was used as the main standard, w

A pilot study on the effects of probiotic supplementation on neuropsychological performance and microRNA-29a-c levels in antiretroviral-treated HIV-1-infected patients.

INTRODUCTION: The gut microbiota is involved in the regulation of cognition, mood, anxiety, and pain, and can impact cognitive functions by producing neuroactive substances or releasing bacterial by-products and metabolites. No information is available on the effects of a probiotic supplementation on brain function of HIV+ subjects. In light of the above considerations, we performed a pilot study in cART-treated HIV-1-positive patients with long-term virologic suppression. The aims were to analyze the effect of high-concentration multistrain probiotic supplementation (Vivomixx®; Visbiome®) on

Mental disorders, functional impairment, and nerve growth factor.

Nerve growth factor (NGF) is an important member of the neurotrophin family and its alteration has been associated with psychiatric disorders. Functionality consists of the activities that an individual can perform, as well as their social participation, which is an important factor in analyzing the carrier living conditions of subjects with psychiatric suffering. Several studies have evaluated functionality in bipolar disorder; however, no studies have evaluated the functionality in other mental disorders. There are also few studies investigating the association between functionality and the

Screening for emotional distress in cancer patients: a systematic review of assessment instruments.

Screening for emotional distress is becoming increasingly common in cancer care. This systematic review examines the psychometric properties of the existing tools used to screen patients for emotional distress, with the goal of encouraging screening programs to use standardized tools that have strong psychometrics. Systematic searches of MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases for English-language studies in cancer patients were performed using a uniform set of key words (eg, depression, anxiety, screening, validation, and scale), and the retrieved studies were independently evaluated by two reviewers.

Early Incorporation to Palliative Care (EPC) in Patients With Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: The PACO Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) experience a considerable disease burden, evident in symptomatic and psychological spheres. Advanced cancer represents a complex scenario for patients and the healthcare team. Early palliative care (EPC) has been proven as a clinically meaningful strategy in this context by several randomized trials but not in a resource-limited setting. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of EPC compared with standard oncological care (SOC) in patients with metastatic NSCLC in Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, randomized clinical tr

Effects of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Myelin Repair and Emotional Changes of a Cuprizone-Induced Demyelination Model.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease for which bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) have become one of the most promising tools for treatment. Cuprizone(CPZ) induces demyelination in the central nervous system and its use has established a demyelination sheath animal model which is particularly suitable for studying the effects of BM-MSCs on the remyelination and mood improvement of a demyelinating model mice. METHODS: 70 C57BL/6 male mice were selected and divided into 4 groups: the normal control (n = 20), chronic demyelination (n = 20), myelin repair (n = 15
