The influence of a low-fat diet on incidence and severity of migraine headaches.

Migraine headaches are a common, debilitating syndrome causing untold suffering and loss of productivity. A review of the literature indicates that high levels of blood lipids and high levels of free fatty acids are among the important factors involved in triggering migraine headaches. Under these conditions, platelet aggregability, which is associated with decreased serotonin and heightened prostaglandin levels, is increased. This leads to vasodilation, the immediate precursor of migraine headache. A high-fat diet is one factor that may directly affect this process. This study, undertaken to

Anemia following Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for morbid obesity; a 5-year follow-up study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients are at risk of anemia post Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). We sought to determine the prevalence of anemia and related nutritional deficiencies 5 years after RYGB and to evaluate adherence to nutritional supplements with iron, vitamin B12, and folate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients operated with RYGB 2004-2006 were eligible for evaluation. Blood samples were collected and use of nutritional supplements was recorded preoperatively, and at outpatients' consultations 1, 2, and 5 years postoperatively. Of 203 patients operated, 184 (91%) completed the 5 year follow-up and we

Molecular cloning and daily variations of the Period gene in a reef fish Siganus guttatus.

As the first step in understanding the molecular oscillation of the circa rhythms in the golden rabbitfish Siganus guttatus--a reef fish with a definite lunar-related rhythmicity--we cloned and sequenced a Period gene (rfPer). The rfPer gene contained an open reading frame that encodes a protein consisting of 1,452 amino acids; this protein is highly homologous to PER proteins of vertebrates including zebrafish. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the rfPER protein is related to the zebrafish PER1 and PER4. The expression of rfPer mRNA in the whole brain, retina, and liver under light/dark (L

Early effects of lafutidine or rabeprazole on intragastric acidity: which drug is more suitable for on-demand use?

BACKGROUND: Medication for the relief of heartburn should have the rapid onset of action required for on-demand use. We studied the inhibition of gastric acid secretion by lafutidine and rabeprazole, given in single doses to fasting and postprandial subjects. METHODS: A total of 22 healthy male, Helicobacter pylori-negative volunteers participated in this randomized, two-way crossover study. They were randomly assigned to receive a single oral dose of 10 mg lafutidine or 20 mg rabeprazole after fasting overnight (12 subjects, fasting study) or after eating a test meal (noodles, 364 kcal; prot

Studies on the inhibition of sialyl- and galactosyltransferases.

The inhibition of the alpha-2,6-sialyltransferase from rat liver, the alpha-2,3-sialyltransferase from porcine submandibular gland and of the galactosyltransferase from human milk were studied using monosaccharide-, nucleoside- and nucleotide-derivatives of their naturally occurring donor substrates cytidine 5'-monophosphate-N-acetylneuraminic acid and uridine 5'-diphosphate-galactose, respectively. Only the corresponding nucleosides/nucleotides showed inhibitory activity. Periodate oxidation of CMP or CMP-Neu5Ac and of UMP or UDP-Gal led to reduced inhibitory efficiency with the respective tr

PET to assess early metabolic response and to guide treatment of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction: the MUNICON phase II trial.

BACKGROUND: In patients with locally advanced adenocarcinoma of the oesophagogastric junction (AEG), early metabolic response defined by 18-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET ([(18)F]FDG-PET) during neoadjuvant chemotherapy is predictive of histopathological response and survival. We aimed to assess the feasibility of a PET-response-guided treatment algorithm and its potential effect on prognosis. METHODS: Between May 27, 2002, and Aug 4, 2005, 119 patients with locally advanced adenocarcinoma of AEG type 1 (distal oesophageal adenocarcinoma) or type 2 (gastric cardia adenocarcinoma) were recruited into

Oral contraceptive pills for heavy menstrual bleeding.

BACKGROUND: Menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) is a benign yet debilitating social and health condition. The widely accepted clinical definition of menorrhagia is blood loss of 80ml or more per period. This figure is derived from population studies that have shown that the average blood loss is between 30 and 40ml, and 90% of women have blood losses of less than 80ml. Excessive menstrual bleeding is the commonest cause of iron deficiency in the United Kingdom affecting 20-25% of the fertile female population. Menorrhagia is a common problem accounting for 12% of all gynaecological referral

Dietary Chromium Picolinate Supplementation Improves Glucose Utilization in Transition Calf by Ameliorating Insulin Response.

The decrease in insulin sensitivity during the transition of preruminant calves into ruminant animals is the common denominator. Meanwhile, this adaptation predisposes dairy calves towards various health issues and metabolic disorders that occur in later life. Chromium (Cr) has been shown to potentiate insulin functioning and is thereby helpful in reducing the risk of these metabolic disorders. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of Cr supplementation on the insulin sensitivity and health status in Hariana calves during their transition period. A total of 24 preruminant Hariana calv

Nationwide survey of the development of drug resistance in the pediatric field in 2000-2001, 2004, 2007, 2010, and 2012: evaluation of the changes in drug sensitivity of Haemophilus influenzae and patients' background factors.

The Drug-Resistant Pathogen Surveillance Group in Pediatric Infectious Disease has conducted surveillance of pediatric patients with respiratory tract infections, meningitis, and sepsis five times (in 2000-2001 [period 1], 2004 [period 2], 2007 [period 3], 2010 [period 4], and 2012 [period 5]). With respect to the clinically isolated Haemophilus influenzae, the drug susceptibility, the frequency of drug-resistant strains, and patients' background factors in each period have already been reported. Here we evaluate trends in the development of drug resistance in H. influenzae, and the relationsh

Application of hairless mouse strain to bioluminescence imaging of Arc expression in mouse brain.

BACKGROUND: Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is a powerful technique for monitoring the temporal and spatial dynamics of gene expression in the mouse brain. However, the black fur, skin pigmentation and hair regrowth after depilation of mouse interfere with BLI during developmental and daily examination. The aim of this study was to extend the application of Arc-Luc transgenic (Tg) mice to the BLI of neuronal activity in the mouse brain by introducing the hairless (HL) gene and to examine Arc-Luc expression at various developmental stages without interference from black fur, skin pigmentation, an

Network and intrinsic contributions to carbachol-induced oscillations in the rat subiculum.

Low-frequency network oscillations occur in several areas of the limbic system where they contribute to synaptic plasticity and mnemonic functions that are in turn modulated by cholinergic mechanisms. Here we used slices of the rat subiculum (a limbic area involved in cognitive functions) to establish how network and single neuron (intrinsic) membrane mechanisms participate to the rhythmic oscillations elicited by the cholinergic agent carbachol (CCh, 50-100 microM). We have found that CCh-induced network oscillations (intraoscillatory frequency = 5-16 Hz) are abolished by an antagonist of non

Equilibrium potential of GABA(A) current and implications for rebound burst firing in rat subthalamic neurons in vitro.

Reciprocally connected glutamatergic subthalamic and GABAergic globus pallidus neurons have recently been proposed to act as a generator of low-frequency oscillatory activity in Parkinson's disease. To determine whether GABA(A) receptor-mediated synaptic potentials could theoretically generate rebound burst firing in subthalamic neurons, a feature that is central to the proposed oscillatory mechanism, we determined the equilibrium potential of GABA(A) current (E(GABA(A))) and the degree of hyperpolarization required for rebound firing using perforated-patch recording. In the majority of neuron

Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) biting deterrence: structure-activity relationship of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.

In this study we evaluated the biting deterrent effects of a series of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids against Aedes aegypti (L), yellow fever mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) using the K & Dbioassay module system. Saturated (C6:0 to C16:0 and C18:0) and unsaturated fatty acids (C11:1 to C14:1, C16:1, C18:1, and C18:2) showed biting deterrence index (BDI) values significantly greater than ethanol, the negative control. Among the saturated fatty acids, mid chain length acids (C10:0 to C13:0) showed higher biting deterrence than short (C6:0 to C9:0) and long chain length acids (C14:0 to C18:0
