OBJECTIVE: To describe the unique case of a middle-aged woman with severe insomnia recurring with a regular infradian period without any other significant clinical condition. To infer the existence of a circadian dysfunction modeled according to the physical phenomenon of the "beats."
PATIENT/METHODS: A two-year prospective observation by means of a sleep log was performed during the patient's normal life. She underwent one month of motor activity recording and also polysomnography, circadian rhythm of body core temperature and psychiatric evaluation during periods with and without insomnia.

This study assessed the course of perinatal depression among 210 Latinas who were and were not affected by intimate partner violence (IPV) and identified associated psychosocial factors. Peak depression prevalence occurred prenatally among 45.7% of IPV-exposed and 24.6% of non-IPV-exposed Latinas. At each assessment, depression was significantly higher for IPV-exposed compared to non-IPV-exposed mothers. In the absence of the entraining light-dark cycle, most totally blind humans free-run, albeit with relative coordination to nonphotic zeitgebers. Such blind free-runners (BFRs) often attempt to maintain a 24-h sleep-wake schedule and consequently suffer from recurrent sleep disruption and daytime somnolence. This study was conducted to determine the periods of the free-running melatonin rhythm and of the rest-activity cycle in 16 BFRs. It was found that the non-24-h component of the rest-activity rhythm correlated with the observed period of the circadian pacemaker.

AIM: We examined the clinical progress of low back pain and radicular pain during the premenstrual period in patients with lumbar disc protrusion and discussed the probable effective physiopathological mechanisms and laboratory results reported in the literature.
