The reduced neural response in certain brain regions when a task-relevant stimulus is repeated ("repetition suppression", RS) is often attributed to facilitation of the cognitive processes performed in those regions. Repetition of visual objects is associated with RS in the ventral and lateral occipital/temporal regions, and is typically attributed to facilitation of visual processes, ranging from the extraction of shape to the perceptual identification of objects. In two fMRI experiments using a semantic classification task, we found RS in a left lateral occipital/inferior temporal region to

Early adversity, for example poor caregiving, can have profound effects on emotional development. Orphanage rearing, even in the best circumstances, lies outside of the bounds of a species-typical caregiving environment. The long-term effects of this early adversity on the neurobiological development associated with socio-emotional behaviors are not well understood. Seventy-eight children, who include those who have experienced orphanage care and a comparison group, were assessed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to measure volumes of whole brain and limbic structures (e.g. amygdala,

The present study examined psychophysiological reactivity to emotional stimuli related and non-related to sleep in people with primary insomnia (PPI) and in good sleepers (GS). Twenty-one PPI and 18 GS were presented with five blocks of neutral, negative, positive, sleep-related negative and sleep-related positive pictures. During the presentation of the pictures, facial electromyography (EMG) of the corrugator and the zygomatic muscles, heart rate (HR) and cardiac vagal tone (CVT) were recorded. Subjective ratings of the stimuli were also collected. We found that only PPI exhibited greater in

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis and patients experiencing first-episode schizophrenia had impairments in visual information processing as indexed by the visual P300 event-related potential. Sixteen UHR individuals, 21 first-episode schizophrenia patients, and 16 healthy controls were included. Participants were asked to perform a visuospatial oddball task while undergoing an electroencephalogram. The UHR and first-episode groups showed reduced P300 amplitudes in comparison to healthy controls. P300 amplitudes were negative

BACKGROUND: Several studies with optical coherence tomography (OCT) have demonstrated thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) in patients with optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis. Similar studies have not been performed with scanning laser polarimetry (SLP), which relies on different physical phenomena. This study was designed to use SLP to measure axonal loss following a single episode of optic neuritis and to determine if there is a relationship between the degree of axonal loss and the degree of residual visual dysfunction.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients with a single episode of

BACKGROUND: The majority of affective psychopathology is rooted early in life and first emerges during childhood and adolescence. However, little is known about how genetic vulnerability affects brain structure and function in childhood since the vast majority of studies published so far have been conducted on adult participants. The present investigation examined for the first time the effects of catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) valine (val) 158 methionine (met) (val158met) polymorphism, which has been shown to moderate predisposition to negative mood and affective disorders, on brain stru

To better understand the contributions of effort on cortical activation associated with motor tasks, healthy participants with varying capacities for isolating the control of individual finger movements performed tasks consisting of a single concurrent abduction of all digits (Easy) and paired finger abduction with digits 2 and 3 abducted together concurrently with digits 4 and 5 (Hard). Brain activity was inferred from measurement using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Effort was measured physiologically using electrodermal responses (EDR) and subjectively using the Borg scale. On avera

The negative impact of external interference on working memory (WM) performance is well documented; yet, the mechanisms underlying this disruption are not sufficiently understood. In this study, electroencephalogram and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were recorded in separate experiments that each introduced different types of visual interference during a period of WM maintenance: distraction (irrelevant stimuli) and interruption (stimuli that required attention). The data converged to reveal that regardless of the type of interference, the magnitude of processing interferin

BACKGROUND: . Vision restoration therapy (VRT) to treat visual field defects used single-point visual stimulation in areas of residual vision up to now. The question arises if the efficiency of restoration can be increased when the entire region of blindness is trained by a visual stimulus aimed at activating extrastriate pathways (extrastriate VRT).
METHODS: . In this crossover study, 18 patients with visual field defects with prior VRT experience were treated with 2 training paradigms. Group 1 (n = 8) first used extrastriate VRT followed by conventional standard VRT. Group 2 (n = 10) traine

In idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (RBD), an association with visuoperceptive disorders has been described. However, such an association has not been clearly established in RBD secondary to Parkinson's disease (PD). We compared visuoperceptive function in four groups of non-demented patients (parkinsonian patients with or without RBD, patients with idiopathic RBD and control participants) via a procedure enabling the analysis of the various components of visual information processing and in order to answer the following question: is RBD associated with visuoperceptive an

PURPOSE: Accumulation of free opsin by mutations in rhodopsin or insufficiencies in the visual cycle can lead to retinal degeneration. Free opsin activates phototransduction; however, the link between constitutive activation and retinal degeneration is unclear. In this study, the photoresponses of Xenopus rods rendered constitutively active by vitamin A deprivation were examined. Unlike their mammalian counterparts, Xenopus rods do not degenerate. Contrasting phototransduction in vitamin A-deprived Xenopus rods with phototransduction in constitutively active mammalian rods may provide new unde

BACKGROUND: Intravenous drugs active via gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors to produce memory impairment during conscious sedation. Memory function was assessed using event-related potentials (ERPs) while drug was present.
METHODS: The continuous recognition task measured recognition of photographs from working (6 s) and long-term (27 s) memory while ERPs were recorded from Cz (familiarity recognition) and Pz electrodes (recollection recognition). Volunteer participants received sequential doses of one of placebo (n = 11), 0.45 and 0.9 microg/ml propofol (n = 10), 20 and 40 ng/ml midazolam (n

It is well documented that good reading skills may be dependent upon adequate dorsal stream processing. However, the degree to which dorsal stream deficits play a causal role in reading failure has not been established. This study used coherent motion and visual frequency doubling to examine whether dorsal stream sensitivity measured before the commencement of formal reading instruction can predict emerging literacy skills in Grade 1. We demonstrate that over age, IQ and Kindergarten Letter knowledge, pre-reading measures of dorsal stream functioning, as assessed by frequency doubling sensitiv

This neuroimaging study investigated the neural mechanisms of the effect of conversation on visual event detection during a driving-like scenario. The static load paradigm, established as predictive of visual reaction time in on-road driving, measured reaction times to visual events while subjects watched a real-world driving video. Behavioral testing with twenty-eight healthy volunteers determined the reaction time effects from overt and covert conversation tasks in this paradigm. Overt and covert conversation gave rise to longer visual event reaction times in the surrogate driving paradigm c

Central coherence is a key concept in research on autism spectrum disorders (ASD). It refers to the process in which diverse information is integrated and higher meaning is constructed in context. A malfunction in this process could result in abnormal attention to partial information in preference to the whole. To verify this hypothesis, we studied the performance of two visual tasks by 10 patients with autistic disorder or Asperger's disorder and by 26 (experiment 1) or 25 (experiment 2) normal subjects. In experiment 1, the subjects memorized pictures, some pictures with a change related to

Acallosal participants usually do not display any disconnection signs in tasks requiring an explicit or declarative type of response. They can accurately compare stimuli placed in each hand and they perform normally on lateralized recognition tasks. They, however, show impairment in tasks assessing interdependent motor control, bilateral coordination and they are also unable to intermanually transfer an implicit procedural motor skill. These deficits suggest that compensation might be limited when a motor component is involved. Alternately, it is also possible that interhemispheric transmissio

In Purkinje cells from cerebellar slice cultures, low-threshold Ca spike (LTS) gives rise to complex bursts in the soma that resemble the complex spike induced by climbing fibers stimulation. We show that LTS is reduced by T-type and R-type Ca channel blockers (SNX-482, nickel, or mibefradil). We propose that LTS is generated by openings of T-type Ca channels (alpha-1G and/or alpha-1I subunits) and R-type Ca channels (alpha-1E subunit isoforms with a weak sensitivity to SNX-482 and to nickel). Using mibefradil we show that climbing fiber stimulation activates LTS, which contributes to the shap

Evidence has emerged for age-related amplification of basic sensory processing indexed by early components of the visual evoked potential (VEP). However, since these age-related effects have been incidental to the main focus of these studies, it is unclear whether they are performance dependent or alternately, represent intrinsic sensory processing changes. High-density VEPs were acquired from 19 healthy elderly and 15 young control participants who viewed alphanumeric stimuli in the absence of any active task. The data show both enhanced and delayed neural responses within structures of the v

Functional MRI during face matching shows activation of the ventral visual stream, including the ventral temporal lobes and fusiform gyrus. In contrast, a location-matching task activates the dorsal visual stream, compromising parietal lobe areas. The morphological basis of the functional coupling between brain regions may be related to the distribution of neuron numbers and neuropil density, but has not yet been demonstrated in the living human brain. Regional neuron density can indirectly be assessed in vivo using structural MRI. The progression of Alzheimer's disease pathology along specifi

Synesthetes who experience grapheme-color synesthesia often report feeling uneasy when dealing with incongruently colored graphemes although no empirical data is available to confirm this phenomenon. We studied this affective reaction related to synesthetic perceptions by means of an evaluation task. We found that the perception of an incorrectly colored word affects the judgments of emotional valence. Furthermore, this effect competed with the word's emotional valence in a categorization task thus supporting the automatic nature of this synesthetically elicited affective reaction. When manipu
