Exploring community participation in project design: application of the community conversation approach to improve maternal and newborn health in Zambia.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has adopted an approach entitled Community Conversation (CC) to improve community engagement in addressing health challenges. CCs are based on Paulo Freire's transformative communication approach, in which communities pose problems and critically examine their everyday life experiences through discussion. We adopted this approach to engage communities in maternal and newborn health discussions in three rural districts of Zambia, with the aim of developing community-generated interventions. METHODS: Sixty (60) CCs were held in three t

Survey of knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding reproductive health among urban men in China: a descriptive study.

There has been little focus on men's reproductive health (RH) in China. This descriptive study conducted in Yiling District, Yichang, China, surveyed male knowledge of sexual physiology and RH to assess levels of knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAPs) regarding prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). A total of 3933 men, aged 18-59 years (mean, 40.3 years), were recruited by cluster random sampling. They completed a questionnaire in the presence of an interviewer, with items related to subject characteristics, RH knowledge, and subjective symptoms of the reproductive system. Phy

Health care utilization and attitudes survey in cases of moderate-to-severe diarrhea among children ages 0-59 months in the District of Manhica, southern Mozambique.

In the predominantly rural Manhiça district, in southern Mozambique, diarrhea is one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 years. Caretakers randomly selected from the Demographic Surveillance Database were invited to participate in a community-based survey on use of healthcare services for gastroenteritis. Of those caretakers reporting an episode of diarrhea during the recall period, 65.2% in the first survey and 43.8% in the second survey reported seeking care at a health facility. Independent risk factors for seeking care in health facilities in the first survey included the

Health status and health care use of Massachusetts women reporting partner abuse.

BACKGROUND: Studies indicate that women abused by their intimate partners are at increased risk for a number of health problems and have increased rates of health care utilization. However, these findings are based mainly on studies using clinic or health plan populations. In this study, we examined the association between intimate partner abuse (IPA) and health concerns and health care utilization in a population-based sample of adult women. METHODS: We analyzed data on 2043 women aged 18 to 59 who participated in the 1998 Massachusetts Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a p

Differences in non-communicable diseases between women in prison and the general population in Brazil.

Women in prison have high risk for non-communicable diseases both in relation to men in prison and in relation to women in the general population. This study documented the health disparities related to diseases among women in prison and in the general female population in Brazil. Women in prisons (WP) < 30 years old had a prevalence of hypertension (PR = 4.5; 95% CI 3.4-6.1), cardiovascular disease (PR = 4.4; 95% CI 2.4-7.9) and asthma (PR = 3.0; 95% CI 2.3-3.8) higher than general female population in Brazil in the same age group. Women in prison > 50 years old also presented asthma prevalen

Barriers and facilitators of cervical cancer screening literacy among rural women with HIV attending rural public health facilities in East Central Uganda: a qualitative study using the integrated model of health literacy.

BACKGROUND: Several rural public health facilities in East Central Uganda have sub-optimal, below 50%, levels of uptake of cervical cancer screening services among women with HIV. This is attributed to low cervical cancer screening literacy: limited ability to access, understand, appraise, and apply cervical cancer screening information. This research identified multi-level (health facility, community, interpersonal and individual) barriers, and facilitators of accessing, understanding, and applying cervical cancer screening information among rural women with HIV attending rural public health

Environmental regulation effect on health poverty in China.

How does government spending on environmental protection benefit people's health? The current paper analyzed 2010 and 2018 data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) database to measure the impact of province-level environmental regulations on the health of local population. The study also applied the Alkire Foster method to develop the multidimensional health poverty (MHP) score, a new index intended to measure the health status of individuals in a holistic manner. Our results indicated that more fiscal spending on environmental regulation could improve health of the local population, es

Rural-Urban Parity and Socioeconomic Gaps in Traumatic Brain Injury Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States. Rural residence and low community income are independently associated with poorer health outcomes, mediated by variations in injury mechanism and healthcare access. We evaluated the impact of geographic location on injury patterns and acute-care metrics in adults with TBI treated at Maryland's statewide Level I trauma center. METHODS: Adults (≥18 years of age) with radiographically confirmed TBI admitted between 2017 and 2021 were identified retrospectively from the institutional trauma r

Risk Perception and Psychosocial Factors Influencing Exposure to Antimicrobial Resistance through Environmental Pathways in Malawi.

Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria are prevalent in household and environmental settings in low-income locations. However, there are limited data on individuals' understanding of AMR bacteria exposure risks in these settings. A cross-sectional study was conducted to identify individual risk perception of AMR bacteria and its associated behavioral determinants at the household level in urban, peri-urban, and rural Malawi. We conducted interviews with 529 participants from 300 households (n = 100 households/site). The risk, attitude, norms, ability, and self-regulation model was used to asse

Unmet Surgical Need among Adults in A Mixed Urban-Rural Community in Nigeria: A Survey of 1,993 Adults Using the Sosas Survey Tool.

INTRODUCTION: Community-based prevalence studies are known to be more accurate than hospital-based records. However, such community-based prevalence studies are uncommon in low- and middle-income countries including Nigeria. Allocation of resources and prioritization of health care needs by policy makers require data from such community-based studies to be meaningful and sustainable. This study aims to assess the prevalence of common surgical conditions amongst adults in Nigeria. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional community-based study to determine the prevalence of congenital and acquire
