How do cancer patients manage unattainable personal goals and regulate their emotions?

OBJECTIVES: This article addressed the role of goal adjustment (i.e. disengagement from unattainable goals and reengagement in alternative goals) and cognitive emotion-regulation strategies (i.e. rumination, catastrophizing, positive refocusing) in cancer patients' psychological well-being. We expected that patients who are better able to disengage from unattainable goals, identify alternative goals, and regulate their emotions by positive refocusing and not engaging in rumination and catastrophizing would experience less negative and more positive affect. DESIGN: In this cross-sectional stud

Appreciation of research information in patients with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Ethicists have debated whether patients with serious mental illness can appreciate the risks of research participation and make autonomous decisions. We compared the abilities of euthymic and manic bipolar patients to appreciate and make voluntary decisions regarding research participation. METHODS: Twenty-six subjects with mania and 25 euthymic subjects reviewed hypothetical consent forms for three research studies of varying risk. We assessed subjects' appreciation of: their diagnosis and need for treatment; the researcher's role; the risks of participation; and the degree of inf

Menopause care in Brazil: policy recognition and the challenge of implementation.

Brazil is undergoing rapid demographic aging, with millions of women living decades beyond menopause. Despite having a universal public health system and one of the world's largest primary healthcare (PHC) networks, menopause remains inconsistently integrated into routine care delivery. Over the past four decades, Brazilian public policies have progressively expanded menopause care from a predominantly reproductive and hormone-centered model toward a broader person-centered and equity-oriented approach. The recent preliminary Brazilian Ministry of Health manual on menopausal transition and men

Psychosocial determinants of exercise behavior in Parkinson's disease: a mini-review.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by progressive motor and non-motor symptoms that profoundly impact quality of life. Physical exercise has emerged as a promising non-pharmacological intervention with neuroprotective potential, yet adherence rates remain suboptimal. This mini-review synthesizes current evidence on psychosocial determinants influencing exercise behavior in PD patients. Accumulating evidence suggests that psychosocial factors play an important role on exercise engagement, such as self-efficacy, social support, depression

Have we [fully] untapped the potential of allied health in the Australian healthcare system?

In 2015, allied health professionals (AHPs) were described as the 'untapped potential' of the Australian health system. A decade later, this perspective paper critically reflects on the progress made and the barriers that continue to prevent AHPs from working to their full potential. Despite being the second largest workforce, AHPs remain underrepresented in policy leadership and funding structures, with medical dominance still shaping health system priorities. While notable advancements have occurred - such as the establishment of a Commonwealth Chief Allied Health Officer, the National Allie
