Development of a Quality-of-Life Measure for Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic skin disorder with adverse impacts on both physical and psychosocial well-being. There is presently no validated HS-specific quality-of-life (QoL) measure. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to develop a QoL instrument for HS (HS-QoL) in accordance with recommended standards. METHODS: Patient interviews (concept elicitation) and expert input were used to develop the conceptual framework for outcomes perceived important to patients with HS. A HS-QoL-v1 measure was developed, and cognitive interviews with patients were conducted for

Beta-amyloid and cognitive decline in late middle age: Findings from the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention study.

INTRODUCTION: The present study investigated the relationship between beta-amyloid (Aβ) and cognition in a late middle-aged cohort at risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: One eighty-four participants (mean age = 60; 72% parental history of AD) completed a [C-11]Pittsburgh compound B positron emission tomography scan and serial cognitive evaluations. A global measure of Aβ burden was calculated, and composite scores assessing learning, delayed memory, and executive functioning were computed. RESULTS: Higher Aβ was associated with classification of psychometric mild cognitive impairment

Validation of the Gambling Disorder Screening Questionnaire, a self-administered diagnostic questionnaire for gambling disorder based on the DSM-5 criteria.

AIM: The DSM-5 has modified the diagnostic criteria for gambling disorder, compared to the fourth edition of the manual; new diagnostic instruments are therefore needed. This study evaluated the psychometric characteristics of the Gambling Disorder Screening Questionnaire (GDSQ), a self-report questionnaire based on the DSM-IV and DSM-5 criteria for Gambling Disorder, measuring its validity, internal consistency, and submitting the questionnaire to a principal components analysis. METHODS: 71 patients from a gambling disorder outpatient clinic and 70 controls were evaluated with the GDSQ, the

The English Version of the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome-Quality of Life Scale for Children and Adolescents (C&A-GTS-QOL).

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder that can have a detrimental impact on the health-related quality of life of children with the condition. To date no patient-reported health-related quality of life measures have been developed for children and adolescents in the English language. This study validated the first disease-specific scale for the quantitative assessment of health-related quality of life in 118 children and adolescents with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (C&A-GTS-QOL) following language adaptation from Italian to English in the United Kingdom. Rasch analysis of the carers quality of life questionnaire for parkinsonism.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the psychometric properties of the Carers Quality of Life Questionnaire for Parkinsonism using a Rasch modeling approach and determine the optimal cut-off score. METHODS: We performed a Rasch analysis of the survey answers of 430 carers of patients with atypical parkinsonism. RESULTS: All of the scale items demonstrated acceptable goodness of fit to the Rasch model. The scale was unidimensional and no notable differential item functioning was detected in the items regarding age and disease type. Rating categories were functioning adequately in all scale items. The scale

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.

The Circumscribed Fear Measure: Development and initial validation of a trans-stimulus phobia measure.

Extant stimulus-specific fear measures are limited to a small number of stimuli and contain significantly different content. This article describes 2 studies that develop a more flexible fear measure—the Circumscribed Fear Measure (CFM)—and examine its psychometric properties. In Study 1, participants (N = 771) completed an initial item pool while considering their most feared stimulus. Results of factor analyses were used to propose a 25-item, 5-factor measure that would span the domain of specific phobia reactions, applicable to different stimuli. In Study 2, participants (N = 959) completed

124 cases of clinical analysis of children with viral myocarditis.

BACKGROUND: Interest in the issue of childhood autism has surged in the recent decades. At the same time, despite the significant progress achieved in understanding the etiological and pathogenetic aspects of the condition, effective ways to treat it have continued to elude us. Stem cell therapy appears to hold great promise in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with both neurological diseases (cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus) and mental disorders (autism, schizophrenia). METHODS: This article presents a case report describing the use of nucleated cord blood cells in a patient with re

Impact of alcohol-related video sequences on functional MRI in abstinent alcoholics.

The object of this study was the identification of brain areas that were significantly more connected than other regions with a previously identified reference region, the posterior cingulate cortex, during the presentation of visual cues in alcoholics. Alcohol-related and neutral video sequences were presented to 30 alcoholics who had been abstinent for at least 4 days. Participants underwent a psychometric assessment before and after the presentation of the video sequences. Functional MRI data were acquired. Psychophysiological interaction analyses were carried out. Participants reported a s

A simplified method for routine outcome monitoring after drug abuse treatment.

THE ROUTINE COLLECTION OF DRUG TREATMENT OUTCOMES TO MANAGE QUALITY OF CARE, IMPROVE PATIENT SATISFACTION, AND ALLOCATE TREATMENT RESOURCES IS CURRENTLY HAMPERED BY TWO KEY DIFFICULTIES: (1) problems locating clients once they leave treatment; and (2) the prohibitive cost of obtaining meaningful and reliable post-treatment data. This pilot describes precise methods for an economical staff-based routine outcome monitoring (ROM) system using an 18-item core measure telephone survey. As implemented at Narconon™ of Oklahoma, a behavioral and social skills based, residential drug rehabilitation pro

Assessing limb apraxia in traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.

People with traumatic brain injury (TBI) may demonstrate action planning disorders and limb apraxia. Many patients, who sustain a spinal cord injury (SCI), sustain a co-occurring TBI (11-29 percent of people with SCI) and therefore are at risk for limb apraxia. People with SCI and TBI (SCI/TBI) rely on powered assistive devices which amplify movement. Their ability to learn complex motor compensatory strategies, that is, limb praxis, is critical to function. We wished to identify methods of screening for apraxia in patients with SCI/TBI. We reviewed instruments available for limb praxis assess

Hereditary vulnerabilities to post-operative cognitive dysfunction and dementia.

In view of multiple prospective investigations reporting an incidence of 10% or greater in elderly patients after cardiac and non-cardiac procedures, it is surprising that no families, twins or even individual cases have been reported with persistent post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) or post-operative dementia (POD) that is otherwise unexplained. As POCD and POD research has shifted in recent years from surgical and anesthetic variables to predictors of intrinsic, patient-specific susceptibility, a number of markers based on DNA sequence variation have been investigated. Nevertheless

Validation of the Chinese version of the gambling motivation scale (C-GMS).

The French items of the Gambling Motivation Scale (GMS) were first developed and validated by Chantal and colleagues in 1994. The scale then became one of the most widely used motivational scales in the gambling literature of the West. The present study recruited 932 Chinese university students in order to validate the Chinese version of the Gambling Motivation Scale (C-GMS). The results of a confirmatory factor analysis of the Chinese data supported the 7-factor model as proposed by Chantal et al. (Soc Leis 17:189-212, 1994). This study also found a second-order model with three major factors

A latent variables examination of processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory during typical development.

This study addressed three related aims: (a) to replicate and extend previous work regarding the nonunitary nature of processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory during development; (b) to quantify the rate at which processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory develop and the extent to which the development of these latter abilities reflect general changes in processing speed; and (c) to evaluate whether commonly used tasks of processing speed, response inhibition, and working memory are valid and reliable when used with a developmentally diverse group. To address th

[Transcultural adaptation of an instrument to evaluate hearing handicap in workers with noise-induced hearing loss].

The noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a chronic and irreversible disease resulting of the exposure to noise in high levels at work. Even in the beginning, this hearing loss can damage in many degrees the worker's quality of life. Before this study, there wasn't an instrument, in Portuguese, to evaluate the psychosocial disadvantages of workers with NIHL. The aim of this research was to make a transcultural adaptation of an especific instrument to evaluate the hearing handicap from the original language to Portuguese, and check the reliability and legitimacy. The selected instrument passed b

Evaluation of fatigue in Parkinson's disease using the Brazilian version of Parkinson's Fatigue Scale.

OBJECTIVE: Fatigue is common in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, factors associated with fatigue in PD are still controversial. This study aimed to translate the Parkinson's Fatigue Scale (PFS) into Brazilian-Portuguese, to test its psychometric properties, and to assess the severity of fatigue in PD as well as its relation to demographic and clinical features, depression, anxiety, excessive daytime sleepiness and cognitive performance. METHODS: We translated and assessed the internal consistency of the Brazilian version of the PFS. After, we assessed 87 PD patients with several neurologica

Measures of health status and quality of life in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Rheumatology Module 3.0, Juvenile Arthritis Quality of Life Questionnaire (JAQQ), Paediatric Rheumatology Quality of Life Scale (PRQL), and Childhood Arthritis Health Profile (CAHP).

Pediatric researchers and clinicians increasingly recognize the importance of measuring the impact of childhood disease across many aspects of a child’s life. In this review, we describe four measures of health related quality of life (HRQOL) designed specifically for children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). HRQOL generally refers to how an individual feels about aspects of their life in relation to their health. The World Health Organization originally described HRQOL as minimally including: physical, mental, and social health dimensions. Subsequent HRQOL definitions, while varied,

Plasma homocysteine in schizophrenia: determinants and clinical correlations in Tunisian patients free from antipsychotics.

The existence of association between hyperhomocysteinaemia (HHC) and schizophrenia has been suggested by several recent studies. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HHC and its main determinants, and sought a correlation with clinical features in Tunisian patients with schizophrenia. Plasma homocysteine (Hcy), folate, and vitamin B12, as well as the C677T methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) polymorphism, were studied in 33 patients with schizophrenia, all free from antipsychotic treatment, and 35 age- and smoking-habit-matched healthy subjects as controls. Construct development: The Suicide Trigger Scale (STS-2), a measure of a hypothesized suicide trigger state.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to develop the construct of a 'suicide trigger state' by exploring data gathered with a novel psychometric self-report instrument, the STS-2. METHODS: The STS-2, was administered to 141 adult psychiatric patients with suicidal ideation. Multiple statistical methods were used to explore construct validity and structure. RESULTS: Cronbach's alpha (0.949) demonstrated excellent internal consistency. Factor analyses yielded two-component solutions with good agreement. The first component described near-psychotic somatization and ruminative flooding, while the second d
