Health impacts and economic costs of residential fires (RESFIRES study): protocol for a population-based cohort study using linked administrative data.

INTRODUCTION: Residential fires remain a significant global public health problem. It is recognised that the reported number of residential fires, fire-related injuries and deaths significantly underestimate the true number. Australian surveys show that around two-thirds of respondents who experience a residential fire are unwilling to call the fire service, and international studies highlight that many individuals who access medical treatment for fire-related injuries do not have an associated fire incident report. The objectives of this study are to quantify the incidence, health impacts, ri

Design of a randomized controlled trial for multiple cancer risk behaviors among Spanish-speaking Mexican-origin smokers.

BACKGROUND: Smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity account for as much as 60% of cancer risk. Latinos experience profound disparities in health behaviors, as well as the cancers associated with them. Currently, there is a dearth of controlled trials addressing these health behaviors among Latinos. Further, to the best of our knowledge, no studies address all three behaviors simultaneously, are culturally sensitive, and are guided by formative work with the target population. Latinos represent 14% of the U.S. population and are the fastest growing minority group in the country. Efforts to

Tobacco use screening and counseling during physician office visits among adults--National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and National Health Interview Survey, United States, 2005-2009.

Tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States; cigarette smoking accounts for approximately 443,000 premature deaths annually. In 2009, the prevalence of smoking among U.S. adults was 20.6% (46 million smokers), with no significant change since 2005 (20.9%). In 2010, approximately 69% of smokers in the United States reported that they wanted to quit smoking. Approximately 44% reported that they tried to quit in the past year for ≥1 day; however, only 4%-7% were successful each year. Tobacco dependence has many features of a chronic disease:

Public health and the BSE epidemic.

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy was discovered in 1986 in the United Kingdom and relatively rapidly spread into its trading partners in Europe via contaminated cattle feed supplements. The practice of using the discarded bovine carcass as cattle feed supplements led to the recycling of the prion agent and the consequent generation of new point source epidemics in the recipient countries. The advent of rapid diagnostic tests and more widespread testing has led to the identification of BSE in countries not previously reporting cases and the recognition of larger numbers of infections in countri

Preferences for Prostate Cancer Outcomes: A Comparison of the Patient Perspective, the General Population Perspective, and a Population at Risk for Prostate Cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To collect disease-specific and generic preference values for three populations. METHODS: Prostate cancer-specific health states were developed with attributes that varied across five health domains: sexual function, urinary function, bowel function, pain, and fear of the future. Men with prostate cancer, men at risk for prostate cancer, and a sample of the general population assigned value to 18 disease-specific health states using standard gamble (SG) methodology. Study participants also completed the Health Utilities Index (HUI) to obtain generic, community-based preference valu

RN-to-MSN students' attitudes toward women experiencing homelessness: A focus group study.

When health professionals, including RNs, have negative attitudes toward women experiencing homelessness, they create barriers to services. It is incumbent on nursing faculty to develop curricula that address homelessness and associated stereotypes, as well as to prepare students to provide safe and appropriate care to the homeless population. The aim of this qualitative study was to examine the attitudes of RN-to-MSN students toward mothers living with their children in a transitional shelter. A convenience sample of 10 students enrolled in a community health nursing course at a university in

Behind the Spotlight: Understanding Mental Illness Disclosure Patterns and Reasons Among Ghanaian Celebrities.

Mental health, like physical health, is essential to overall well-being. However, the symptoms of mental health disorders, coupled with societal understandings of mental health, often lead individuals to keep their struggles private, hindering help-seeking behaviors. This study, guided by communication privacy management theory (CPM), examined how Ghanaian celebrities navigate the decision to disclose or withhold information about their mental illnesses. Data were collected through individual semi-structured interviews with 20 Ghanaian celebrities and analyzed using the phronetic iterative app

Enhancing physical healthcare in the mental health system: Perspective from the 2024 Equally Well Forum Embedding Lived Experience.

Each year in Australia, tens of thousands of people living with mental illness die from preventable physical health conditions. Australia is yet to meet its 2008 commitment to provide equal healthcare for people with disabilities (Article 25, United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities). In May 2024, a national forum of 240 delegates called for urgent action to address the life expectancy gap for people living with mental illness. This article presents perspectives of forum delegates about: (1) where we need to be, (2) critical reform elements and (3) foundational comp

A review of health education activities targeting schoolchildren for the control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Southeast Asia, with emphasis upon the Magic Glasses approach.

Soil-transmitted helminths continue to be a serious problem causing disease and morbidity globally. Children, mostly school-aged, are more at risk of these infections. The main strategy for control remains to be the mass drug administration (MDA) of antihelminthic drugs. With the limitation of MDA to prevent re-infection, the need for additional approaches such as hygiene education and improvements in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure are required. Although the importance of health education as a crucial component of an integrated approaches to STH control is highlighted, thi

Harnessing the power of infection prevention and public health data systems to support health care in Washington State during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: State health departments' (SHD) role in infection prevention and control (IPC) includes robust educational and consultative services for various health care settings. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Washington-SHD (W-SHD) IPC staff conducted remote and on-site Infection Control Assessment and Response (ICAR) consultations for long-term care (LTC) and non-LTC health care facilities. METHODS: ICAR consultations were classified as "reactive" in response to a COVID-19 outbreak or "proactive" to help facilities improve IPC protocols. Facility addresses were geocoded to census tracks, cla

Assessing and Reducing Risk to Healthcare Workers in Outbreaks.

The 2014-2016 West African Ebola epidemic was devastating in many respects, not least of which was the impact on healthcare systems and their health workforce. Healthcare workers-including physicians, clinical officers, nurses, midwives, and community health workers-serve on the front lines of efforts to detect, control, and stop the spread of disease. Risk mitigation strategies, including infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, are meant to keep healthcare workers safe from occupational exposure to disease and to protect patients from healthcare-associated infections. Despite ongoin

Care for low back pain: can health systems deliver?

Low back pain is the leading cause of years lived with disability globally. In 2018, an international working group called on the World Health Organization to increase attention on the burden of low back pain and the need to avoid excessively medical solutions. Indeed, major international clinical guidelines now recognize that many people with low back pain require little or no formal treatment. Where treatment is required the recommended approach is to discourage use of pain medication, steroid injections and spinal surgery, and instead promote physical and psychological therapies. Many healt

Urinary incontinence among a 65-year old Swedish population: medical history and psychosocial consequences.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a disability caused by an impairment, which can lead to a handicap of importance for nursing care. This means that UI is not only a practical-medical concern but also a socio-economic problem. The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of UI among 65 year-olds in a Swedish Health Care District and to compare gender differences concerning medical history and psychosocial consequences. In a Primary Health Care District, a questionnaire pertaining to UI was mailed to all women and men 65 years of age (N = 458). A total of 91% (n = 419) was sufficient for
