AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyze how proximal radial neck resorption (PRNR) starts and progresses radiologically in two types of press-fit radial head arthroplasties (RHAs), and to investigate its clinical relevance.
METHODS: A total of 97 patients with RHA were analyzed: 56 received a bipolar RHA (Group 1) while 41 received an anatomical implant (Group 2). Radiographs were performed postoperatively and after three, six, nine, and 12 weeks, six, nine, 12, 18, and 24 months, and annually thereafter. PRNR was measured in all radiographs in the four radial neck quadrants. The Mayo Elbo

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether ultrasonography can be used to explore the medial and lateral ligament structures during the acute phase of a closed elbow injury.
METHODS: A single-center, prospective study performed between December 2019 and June 2020, including patients who suffered a radial head fracture or elbow dislocation. Two radiologists did a blinded analysis using ultrasonography of visibility, injury grade, and presence of bone avulsion for the radial collateral ligament (RCL), lateral ulnar collateral ligament (LUCL), annular ligament (AL), and anterior (MCLant) and posterior bundles

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The evaluation of metaphyseal angular deformities in children includes indication and timing for corrective osteotomy, and possible need for several operations during growth. Gap-fillers are usually autologous bone grafts, which might cause donor site problems. Calcium phosphate (CaP) bone cement may be a possible alternative.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed 15 corrective osteotomies from 2007 to 2013 in 10 children, ages 5 to 18, with Norian SRS bone cement as a gap-filler, in the distal radius (12), proximal radius (1), and proximal humerus (2). Due to growth arre

BACKGROUND: Wrist fractures are a common occurrence, affecting patients of all ages. Wrist fracture patients often develop oedema and the presence of a cast increases the risk. The use of adhesive elastic tape is indicated for oedema control, but there is no definitive evidence of its effectiveness. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the tape in control of hand oedema in wrist fracture patients with a forearm cast.
METHODS: We present a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial with blinded data processing. We will apply the tape to the intervention group after cast appli

OBJECTIVES: To determine outcomes of radial head replacement (RHR) for acute fractures using 3 different implant designs with or without cement fixation.
DESIGN: Retrospective.
SETTING: Tertiary referral hospital.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: One hundred fourteen elbows underwent RHR for an acute radial head fracture using either (1) a nonanatomic design and smooth stem (n = 60), (2) a nonanatomic design with a grit-blasted, ingrowth, curved stem (n = 21), or (3) an anatomic design with a grit-blasted ingrowth straight stem (n = 33). Cemented (25%) or uncemented (75%) fixation was used at the dis

Improving the clinical outcome of scaphoid fractures may benefit from adequate monitoring of their healing in order to for example identify complications such as scaphoid nonunion at an early stage and to adjust the treatment strategy accordingly. However, quantitative assessment of the healing process is limited with current imaging modalities. In this study, high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) was used for the first time to assess the changes in bone density, microarchitecture, and strength during the healing of conservatively-treated scaphoid fractures. Thi

Flexor tendon entrapment (FTE) is a rare and usually lately diagnosed complication of pediatric forearm fractures. In this case report, we present a case of a neglected ring and little finger flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) entrapment after closed reduction of both bone forearm fracture and treated five years later due to late diagnosis. A 20-year-old man presented to outpatient clinic with flexion contracture of ring and little finger that occurred after both-bone forearm fracture treated with closed reduction and long arm cast five years ago. On his physical examination, flexion contracture

PURPOSE: Carpal malalignment following intra-articular fractures has been reported in the literature, with no clear description of possible ligamentous injury leading to the radiological appearance. This study presents a series of patients that developed carpal instability nondissociative (CIND) following acute wrist fractures. The mechanism of injury is postulated by using a cadaveric laboratory investigation.
METHOD: Twelve patients with average age of 32 years were identified with CIND, between 2013 and 2018. Ten patients with a normal carpal alignment in the initial postoperative radiogra

Common hand problems are treated differently in different countries. This article attempts to bring together the views of surgeons from different countries on some of the most common hand problems that hand surgeons encounter in daily practice. In practice, the correct treatment of these problems may be the most important and influential to patients.

This case report describes a rare side effect during a Bier's block. During local anaesthetic injection, the patient suffered a sudden onset painful petechial rash localised to the upper limb, distal to the tourniquet, without systemic effect. After deflation of the tourniquet, the pain resolved and no systemic effects were seen. The skin changes settled without treatment over one week. The discussion summarises standard technique and precautions required for a Bier's block. It also evaluates risks and complications.

INTRODUCTION: Radiocarpal dislocation is a rare injury and thus the number of cases described is limited. The course of the injury is favorable when the treatment provided is appropriate.
CLINICAL CASE: A 21-year-old male patient who sustained radiocarpal dislocation and fracture of the radial styloid process in both wrists. He was treated with closed reduction and external fixation. The evaluation at 3 months showed favorable results.
DISCUSSION: This case is one of the few similar cases reported because it is an uncommon pathology and it is even less frequent because the injury involves bo

The authors compare the functional outcome of 8 patients treated by distal scaphoid resection arthroplasty for scaphoid nonunion with symptomatic wrist arthritis before surgery and after a minimum follow-up of 6 months. There was a significantly better range of radial deviation and grip strength at the time of re-examination. Significantly fewer patients complained of resting pain. By contrast the change of radiolunate angle measured before the surgery and at the time of re-examination was statistically insignificant. Our preliminary results show that distal scaphoid resection arthroplasty see

We report the use of a bone graft harvested from the palmar and ulnar aspect of the distal radius and vascularized by the palmar carpal artery for the treatment of scaphoid nonunion in 17 patients, ten of whom had already had unsuccessful surgery. Union was obtained in all cases at an average of 60 days (range, 45-90 days). The average follow-up was 16 months (range, 12-36 months). There were no failures.

The incidence of complications related to wrist arthroscopy is unknown because of the small number of reported cases. Potential complications have been identified and are classified as (1) traction related; (2) complications incurred during the establishment of portals; (3) procedure-specific complications; and (4) miscellaneous. Techniques are described that may decrease the likelihood of each of these complications.

The authors attract attention to frequent association of fracture of the inner epicondyle of the humerus with dislocation of the bones of the forearm, which is of great practical importance. On this basis classification of fractures of the inner epicondyle of the humerus is presented. The authors believe that in treating this injury the method of choice should consist in open reposition, which allows to achieve accurate reposition, sanation of the ulnar joint cavity and stable fixation of the fragment. Osteosynthesis by screw-awl provides for reliable fixation of the fragment and allows for ea

High-level gymnastic training may cause clinical and radiographic changes in the wrist. A case is reported demonstrating bilateral closure of the ulnar side of the distal radius epiphyseal plate in a patient with a history of high-level gymnastic training. Cumulative microtrauma to the ulnar side of the distal radius epiphyseal plate may cause premature closure leading to a Madelung-like deformity.
