A sulphotransferase activity, concentrated mainly in the microsomal fraction, which catalyses the transfer of sulphate group from 3'-phosphoadenosine-5'-phosphosulphate to galactosylceramide and lactosylceramide was demonstrated in rat submandibular and sublingual glands. Body dimensions, composition, oxygen consumption and core temperature were measured in 2 groups of immature rats treated with PMSG. The first group weighed over 60 g on Day 27 of life and responded to PMSG treatment by ovulating; the second group weighed less than 60 g and did not ovulate after PMSG. Maternal thiamine deficiency and undernutrition are found to cause significant deficits in body and spinal cord weights of the offspring at 21 days of age. The concentration of different lipids is found to be decreased significantly in both experimental groups as compared to normal controls. However, these deficits do not seem to differ between the undernourished and the thiamine-deficient groups. The results suggest a general effect of growth retardation rather than thiamine deficiency per se on the lipid composition of spinal cord.

The extent of "first-pass" elimination of lidocaine in relation to the site of absorption in the rectum of rats was investigated. Male Wistar rats received lidocaine orally, i.v. or rectally at 4, 2, 1 and at about 0.2 cm from the anus. To investigate the role of the pineal gland in the long-term suppression of gonadotrophin secretion induced by prolactin, the effects of pinealectomy were studied in adult male rats with hyperprolactinaemia produced by the transplantation of two pituitary glands under the kidney capsule. In experiments of male Wistar rats, it was established that a long-term apomorphine treatment caused changes in density of benzodiazepine receptors in forebrain structures opposite to those elicited by acute administration.
