Objectives. As the central organ of the respiratory system, the human lung is responsible for supplying oxygen to the blood, which reaches the erythrocytes by diffusion through the alveolar walls and is then distributed throughout the body. By exploiting the difference in electron density detected by a phase shift in soft tissue, high-resolution x-ray phase-contrast computed tomography (XPCT) can resolve biological structures in a sub-μm range, shedding new light on the three-dimensional structure of the lungs, physiological functions and pathological mechanisms.Approach.This work presents both

Pure dislocation of the ankle is an extremely rare injury accounting for only 0.065% of all ankle injuries and 0.46% of all ankle dislocations. The mechanism of the injury generally consists of high-energy trauma which is associated with a combination of plantar flexion and inversion or eversion of the foot. We present a case of a 22-year-old male patient who sustained a closed pure ankle dislocation after a fall from a small height. He was treated conservatively with closed reduction and circumferential cast immobilization for six weeks, followed by a functional rehabilitation program. The pa

PURPOSE: Assessing the complex three-dimensional (3D) structure of the cochlea is crucial to understanding the fundamental aspects of signal transduction in the inner ear and is a prerequisite for the development of novel cochlear implants. X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography offers destruction-free 3D imaging with little sample preparation, thus preserving the delicate structure of the cochlea. The use of heavy metal stains enables higher contrast and resolution and facilitates segmentation of the cochlea.
APPROACH: For μ-CT of small animal and human cochlea, we explore the heavy metal

OBJECTIVES: Here we describe a rare post-traumatic lesion and discuss its management.
BACKGROUND: Lumbar Morel-Lavallée is a rarely reported lesion. The cause is usually post-traumatic in a polytraumatic context, and care is often focused elsewhere. This leads to misdiagnosis with a risk of chronic pain and infection. In addition, there is no consensus for the management as few cases have been reported so far.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old African woman was involved in a motor accident. Physical examination at the emergency department revealed moderate head trauma, a lumbar inflammatory mass, a

BACKGROUND: This case reports the synchronous diagnosis of two rare unrelated diseases; leiomyosarcoma and tenosynovial giant cell tumor of the knee. It focuses on the challenges of diagnosing tenosynovial giant cell tumor, including cognitive biases in clinical medicine that delay diagnosis. It also demonstrates the pathogenic etiology of tenosynovial giant cell tumor, evidenced by the transient deterioration of the patients' knee symptoms following the administration of prophylactic granulocyte colony-stimulating factor given as part of the chemotherapeutic regime for leiomyosarcoma.

PURPOSE: Internal motion of the larynx can cause normal tissue toxicity and/or tumor underdosage during radiotherapy. MR-guided radiation therapy (MRgRT) provides improved soft-tissue contrast for patient setup and real-time gating of radiation based on cine imaging of tumor motion, potentially making it an advantageous modality for laryngeal treatments. However, there are potential concerns regarding the small target size, proximity to heterogeneous tissue interfaces in the airway that may cause dosimetric errors in the presence of the magnetic field, and uncertainty about the ability of MR-l

Left ventricular myocardial infarction (MI) has broad and debilitating effects on cardiac function. In many cases, MI leads to ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR), a condition characterized by incompetency of the mitral valve (MV). IMR has many deleterious effects as well as a high mortality rate. While various clinical treatments for IMR exist, success of these procedures remains limited, in large part because IMR dramatically alters the geometry and function of the MV in ways that are currently not well understood. Previous investigations of post-MI MV remodeling have elucidated that MV tiss

RATIONALE: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), also known as abdominal cocoon syndrome, is an uncommon condition that typically presents with features of bowel obstruction. EPS followed by cesarean section is extremely rare. Intestinal obstruction caused by EPS lacks specificity and poses clinical difficulties for diagnosis and treatment. We present the case of a patient with recurrent intestinal obstruction followed by cesarean section, and the diagnosis of EPS was confirmed intraoperatively. The patient recovered well postoperatively, and achieved satisfactory therapeutic results. Mana

Three cases of primary NTRK-rearranged spindle cell neoplasm of the lung with resemblance to those described in the somatic soft tissues are presented. The patients are 2 males and 1 female with age at presentation ranging from 31 to 45 years (mean, 36 y). All the 3 tumors were discovered incidentally during physical examinations. None of the patients had any prior history of mesenchymal neoplasms anywhere else. Computed tomography revealed intrapulmonary mass located in the right upper lobe, left upper lobe, and left lower lobe, respectively. All the patients underwent lobectomy. Grossly, the

UNLABELLED: Ultra-rare diseases occur with a frequency of 2 in 100 000 people or less. Kimura's disease (KD) affects less than 1 in 1 000 000 people. It is a benign, chronic inflammatory soft tissue disorder, accompanied by eosinophilia, raised immunoglobulin E (IgE) titer and the presence of painless subcutaneous masses, usually in the head and neck region. The disease was first described in 1948 and occurs at higher rates in Asia than in America or Europe.

Purpose Secondary mandibular defect reconstruction is a challenging operation. It is performed rather rarely, as in most of the cases a primary reconstruction is preferable. Restoration of function and symmetry, in secondary reconstruction of mandibular defects, requires accurate repositioning of segments and appropriate soft tissue filling. The purpose of this study is to estimate the value of three-dimensional (3D) digital modeling to meet the above requirements, in secondary microsurgical reconstruction of mandibular defects. Methods Five cases of mandibular defects, with various degrees of

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) Positron Emission Tomography, paired with Computed Tomography (PET/CT) are commonly used modalities in the complicated diagnostic work-up of osteomyelitis. PET/MRI is a relatively novel hybrid modality with suggested applications in bone infection imaging, based on expert opinion and previous qualitative research. 18F-FDG PET/MRI has the advantages of reduced radiation dose, more soft tissue information, and is deemed more valuable for surgical planning compared to 18F-FDG PET/CT. The goal of this study

BACKGROUND: The cavovarus deformity of Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is often characterized by a paradoxical relationship of hindfoot varus and forefoot valgus. The configuration of the midfoot, which links these deformities, is poorly understood. Accurate assessment of 3-dimensional alignment under physiologic loadbearing conditions is possible using weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT). This is the first study to examine the rotational deformity in the midfoot of CMT patients and, thus, provide key insights to successful correction of CMT cavovarus foot.
METHODS: A total of 27 WBCT

Retroperitoneal tumors (RPTs) are very rare tumors that arise in the large space of the retroperitoneum. About two-third of these tumors are malignant, of which soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is the most common and comprises almost one-third of malignant RPTs. Twenty to thirty percent of RPTs are benign. The retroperitoneal cavity has a very large potential space for tumor enlargement to a very high diameters without causing specific symptoms, especially during the initial phase of tumor enlargement. On diagnosis, the average tumor weight is 15 - 20 kg and tumor diameter is 20 - 25 cm. The most com

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive fibromatosis, also known as desmoid tumour (DT), is a locally invasive soft tissue malignancy originating from fascial planes, connective tissue, and musculoaponeurotic structures of the muscles. The symptoms greatly depend on the location and size of the tumour.
CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old male patient without any comorbidities with a large, palpable mass in the abdomen underwent computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen during diagnostic examination in September 2017 in another centre. The CT scan revealed a giant intraperitoneal 30×40cm tumour without signs of infiltr
