Efficiency of corncob-derived biochar and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria as growth promoters for Coffea arabica L. seedlings.

Corncob-derived biochar and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can improve soil fertility and plant performance, but their co-application in Coffea arabica L. nurseries remains poorly characterised. This study evaluated corncob-derived biochar combined with Bacillus megaterium S2-4a1 under well-watered greenhouse conditions. A completely randomised design with six replications was maintained for 180 days and included five treatments: control (T1), S2-4a1 alone (T2), and S2-4a1 combined with 1, 2, or 3% (w/w) biochar (T3-T5). Soil physicochemical properties, culturable microbial popula…

Impact of pharmaceutical waste (diclofenac) on consistency and particle packing of a Malaysian urban residual clay.

Rising demand for pharmaceuticals has raised concerns about their production and disposal, as poor management can harm the environment. Pharmaceutical waste, including unused and expired medications, mainly comes from households, the pharmaceutical industry, and healthcare facilities. These contaminants can enter the environment through soil, wastewater, landfill leachate, and agricultural runoff and alter the consistency of natural soil. However, limited literature on this topic was encountered during our review, which motivated this study. This research investigates the effect of diclofenac …

Target and non-target analysis of organochlorine pesticides and their transformation products in an agrochemical-contaminated area.

Organochlorine pesticides show biological toxicity and their degradation typically takes many years. Previous studies of agrochemical-contaminated areas have mainly focused on limited target compounds, and emerging pollutants in soil have been overlooked. In this study, we collected soil samples from an abandoned agrochemical-contaminated area. Target analysis and non-target suspect screening by gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry were combined for qualitative and quantitative analysis of organochlorine pollutants. Target analysis showed that dichlorodiphenyltrichl…

Physiological Essence of Magnesium in Plants and Its Widespread Deficiency in the Farming System of China.

Magnesium (Mg) is an essential nutrient for a wide array of fundamental physiological and biochemical processes in plants. It largely involves chlorophyll synthesis, production, transportation, and utilization of photoassimilates, enzyme activation, and protein synthesis. As a multifaceted result of the introduction of high-yielding fertilizer-responsive cultivars, intensive cropping without replenishment of Mg, soil acidification, and exchangeable Mg (Ex-Mg) leaching, Mg has become a limiting nutrient for optimum crop production. However, little literature is available to better understand di…

Belowground fungal volatiles perception in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) facilitates plant growth under biotic stress.

Microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) have great potential in plant ecophysiology, yet the role of belowground VOCs in plant stress management remains largely obscure. Analysis of biocontrol producing VOCs into the soil allow detailed insight into their interaction with soil borne pathogens for plant disease management. A root interaction trial was set up to evaluate the effects of VOCs released from Trichoderma viride BHU-V2 on soil-inhabiting fungal pathogen and okra plant growth. VOCs released into soil by T. viride BHU-V2 inhibited the growth of collar rot pathogen, Sclerotium rolfs…

Exposure to aged crumb rubber reduces survival time during a stress test in earthworms (Eisenia fetida).

Solid waste management struggles with the sustainable disposal of used tires. One solution involves shredding used tires into crumb rubber and using the material as infill for artificial turf. However, crumb rubber contains hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and heavy metals, and it travels into the environment. Earthworms living in soil contaminated with virgin crumb rubber gained 14% less body weight than did earthworms living in uncontaminated soil, but the impact of aged crumb rubber on the earthworms is unknown. Since many athletic fields contain aged crumb rubber, we compared the body weig…

Leaching of veterinary antibiotics in calcareous Chinese croplands.

Veterinary antibiotics reach the soil environment by manure application, where they accumulate or are prone to vertical translocation. We assumed that a high pH value at slightly calcareous soil properties should retain tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones even at high manure loads, whereas it should facilitate leaching of sulfonamides. Hence, we investigated the transport of manure-added antibiotics in a soil developed from calcareous parent material on a farm in peri-urban Beijing, China. Leachate was collected from zero-tension samplers, installed at 40cm depth under undisturbed soil, which w…

Climate controls on valley fever incidence in Kern County, California.

Coccidiodomycosis (valley fever) is a systemic infection caused by inhalation of airborne spores from Coccidioides immitis, a soil-dwelling fungus found in the southwestern United States, parts of Mexico, and Central and South America. Dust storms help disperse C. immitis so risk factors for valley fever include conditions favorable for fungal growth (moist, warm soil) and for aeolian soil erosion (dry soil and strong winds). Here, we analyze and inter-compare the seasonal and inter-annual behavior of valley fever incidence and climate risk factors for the period 1980-2002 in Kern County, Cali…

Neglected Aspects of SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol Transmission in Bathrooms of Multistory and High-Rise Buildings - Beijing Municipality, China, October 2022.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: There is a toilet flush-soil stack-floor drain pathway of aerosol transmission in multistory and high-rise buildings, but the influencing factors are not completely clear. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: The poor airtightness of the connecting parts of the floor drain, as well as pressure fluctuations in the sewage pipe during toilet flushing caused by blockage of the soil stack vent, may lead to the cross-floor transmission of viral aerosols through the soil stack and floor drains. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE?: In multistory a…

Interactions between the nematode parasite of pigs, Ascaris suum, and the earthworm Aporrectodea longa.

Pig faeces in which Ascaris suum eggs had been embryonating for 57 days were placed in buckets of soil containing either 30 or no earth-worms (Aporrectodea longa). When present, earthworms consumed the faeces and transported the eggs down into the soil, without inflicting any visible damage on the eggs. In later experiments 10 earthworms from the above experiment were fed to each of ten pigs, and another 40 earthworms were dissected. None of the 10 pigs became infected with A. suum through consumption of earthworms, and none of the dissected earthworms were found to contain A. suum larvae. Thi…

Enhancing chlorpyrifos degradation and plant growth through biochar-assisted microbial remediation.

The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. Developing sustainable, in situ remediation strategies is therefore a priority. This study evaluated an integrated plant-microbe-biochar system for the remediation of CPF-contaminated soils. Indigenous CPF-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soils and screened for degradation efficiency in mineral salts medium (MSM) and soil microcosms. The most efficient isolate, designated C78, was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Kle…

Composition of DOM along the depth gradients in the paddy field treated with crop straw for 10 years.

Crop straw return is a widely used agricultural management practice. The addition of crop straw significantly alters the pool of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in agricultural soils and plays a pivotal role in the global carbon (C) cycle, which is sensitive to climate change. The DOM concentration and composition at different soil depths could regulate the turnover and further storage of organic C in terrestrial systems. However, it is still unclear how crop straw return influences the change in DOM composition in rice paddy soils. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted in which paddy soi…

Effects of standard humic materials on relative bioavailability of NDL-PCBs in juvenile swine.

Young children with their hand-to-mouth activity may be exposed to contaminated soils. However few studies assessing exposure of organic compounds sequestrated in soil were realized. The present study explores the impact of different organic matters on retention of NDL-PCBs during digestive processes using commercial humic substances in a close digestive model of children: the piglet. Six artificial soils were used. One standard soil, devoid of organic matter, and five amended versions of this standard soil with either fulvic acid, humic acid, Sphagnum peat, activated carbon or a mix of Sphagn…

Widespread ancient bedrock landslide deposits facilitate deep weathering for storage and access of organic carbon.

Soils have been proposed as a tool to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). However, sparse field data and soil databases that do not account for geomorphic controls on soil properties hinder accurate quantification of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics at the watershed scale. In mountainous terrain, relict landslide deposits are common and feature thick (>5 m), weathered profiles with substantial SOC below the typically measured top 30 cm of soil. We generated a SOC-age relationship using a landslide chronosequence in Western Oregon where these landforms are abundant. We applied our relati…
