Diastolic mitral regurgitation is a unique Doppler finding that can be missed if special attention is not paid to it. There are a few causes of such abnormal flow, ranging from a conduction abnormality to abnormal valvular and left ventricle function. Failure to recognize it might lead to unnecessary investigations and delay the primary diagnosis. We are presenting a teaching case and discuss the associated pathology.

Allupurinol is a commonly prescribed drug. However, the use of this drug is not based on evidence and guidelines. We audited Allopurinol prescriptions in patients aged 65 years and over in a teaching hospital over 22 weeks. In 47% of patients the dose was higher than recommended and in 40% it was lower. Quality use of medications is an important issue to maintain quality of life in the elderly.

Jelutong is the wood from Dyera costulata growing in south-east Asia. It is soft and easy to work and is used in, e.g., model workshops in car factories. It has also been much used in woodwork teaching in Swedish comprehensive schools. Necrotizing fasciitis, a severe soft tissue infection, was first described 80 years ago. It occurs rarely in obstetric and gynecology practice. We reviewed medical records of 2,894 women who had underwent an abdominal hysterectomy at the Social Security Agency Aegean Obstetrics and Gynecology Teaching Hospital between 2001 and 2005, and identified 5 (0.17%) cases of necrotizing fasciitis, which are described.
