Differentiation of Alzheimer's Disease from Frontotemporal Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment Based on Arterial Spin Labeling Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Pilot Cross-Sectional Study from PUMCH Dementia Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Arterial spin labeling (ASL) is helpful in early diagnosis and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), with advantages including no exposure to radioactivity, no injection of a contrast agent, more accessible, and relatively less expensive. OBJECTIVE: To establish the perfusion pattern of different dementia in Chinese population and evaluate the effectiveness of ASL in differentiating AD from cognitive unimpaired (CU), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). METHODS: Four groups of participants were enrolled, including AD, FTD, MCI, and CU

Functional MRI and Structural Connectome Analysis of Language Networks in Japanese-English Bilinguals.

We aimed to clarify the mechanisms of neural plasticity involved in language. We hypothesized that alterations which occur in bilinguals cou … to the Japanese monolinguals in fMRI. Late bilinguals demonstrated bigger BRs in the right anterior temporal lobe and left medial parietal lobe than early bilinguals. Early bilinguals showed a higher NOFs between the right putamen and precentral gyrus than monolinguals and late bilinguals in DTI. Late bilinguals showed a lower NOFs between the left superior tem …

Differential Regional Brain Spontaneous Activity in Subgroups of Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Background: Amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) has a high conversion risk to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aMCI patients may have only a memory deficit (single-domain-aMCI, sd-aMCI) or deficits in multiple cognitive domains (multiple-domain-aMCI, md-aMCI). However, differences in intrinsic brain activity between these two sub-types remain unclear. Method: Neuropsychological and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired from 24 patients with sd-aMCI, 23 patients with md-aMCI, and 32 healthy controls (HCs). We used the fractional amplitude of low-freque

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor in a Chinese adult: a novel case report and review of literature.

Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT) is a rare glioma tumor classified by the World Health Organization as a central nervous system tumor in 2016. DLGNT is most common in children and adolescents but is rare in adults. A 25-year-old male patient was admitted due to recurrent seizures. Head magnetic resonance imaging revealed lesions in the right temporal lobe, which were considered to be intracranial tumors with variable properties. The patient was admitted for surgical treatment. After admission, it was confirmed that seizures were associated with right temporal lobe lesions. Rig…

Spatial frequency modulates the human visual cortical response to temporal frequency variation: an fMRI study.

The brain response to temporal frequencies (TF) has been already reported, but with no study for different TFs with respect to various spatial frequencies (SF). Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments were performed by 1.5 Tesla General Electric-system in 14 volunteers (9 males and 5 females, range 19-26 years) during square-wave reversal checkerboard visual stimulation with different temporal frequencies of 4, 6, 8 and 10 Hz in two states of low SF of 0.5 and high SF of 8 cpd (cycles/degree). The activation map was created using the data obtained from the block designed fMRI

Sporadic four-repeat tauopathy with frontotemporal degeneration, parkinsonism and motor neuron disease.

We report a sporadic tauopathy of 6-year duration in a 76-year-old woman. Her initial symptoms were asymmetrical parkinsonism and muscle weakness, with apraxia appearing 2 years later. The brain showed frontal and temporal cerebral atrophy; severe neuronal loss and gliosis were observed in the precentral cortex (loss of Betz cells was also evident) and premotor area, and in the medial temporal lobe, including the temporal tip, amygdala, and hippocampal CA1-subiculum border zone. The substantia nigra showed moderate neuronal loss and gliosis. In the spinal cord, loss of the anterior horn cells …

Clinical features of sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy in relation to the seizure-onset zone: A review of 135 surgically treated cases.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep-related hypermotor epilepsy (SHE), formerly nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy, is characterized by abrupt and typically sleep-related seizures with motor patterns of variable complexity and duration. They seizures arise more frequently in the frontal lobe than in the extrafrontal regions but identifying the seizure onset-zone (SOZ) may be challenging. In this study, we aimed to describe the clinical features of both frontal and extrafrontal SHE, focusing on ictal semiologic patterns in order to increase diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical fea

Bilateral volume reduction in posterior hippocampus in psychosis of epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosis of epilepsy (POE) occurs more frequently in temporal lobe epilepsy, raising the question as to whether abnormalities of the hippocampus are aetiologically important. Despite decades of investigation, it is unclear whether hippocampal volume is reduced in POE, perhaps due to small sample sizes and methodological limitations of past research. METHODS: In this study, we examined the volume of the total hippocampus, and the hippocampal head, body and tail, in a large cohort of patients with POE and patients with epilepsy without psychosis (EC). One hundred adults participated…
