Substance use, mental health and dual disorders on pregnancy: Results of prevalence and treatment rates in a developed country.

Smoking and substance use during pregnancy are major preventable causes of mortality and morbidity, having a bidirectional and deleterious relationship with the mental health of the mother and child. As part of the WOMAP (Woman Mental Health and Addictions on Pregnancy) initiative, our study aimed to describe the prevalence of co-occurring mental illness and substance use problems, diagnoses and severity of those considered at risk and rates of treatment.A screening of 2,014 pregnant women was done using the AC-OK scale and they were asked about their smoking habits and services use for mental

Considerations for Selecting Cognitive Endpoints and Psychological Patient-Reported Outcomes for Clinical Trials in Pediatric Patients With Sickle Cell Disease.

Pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience a range of medical complications that result in significant morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in prophylactic and curative treatment approaches have highlighted the need for sensitive and clinically-meaningful trial endpoints. The detrimental effects of cognitive and psychological difficulties on social and economic mobility are well described. Although numerous reviews have assessed cognitive outcomes in other rare genetic disorders, SCD has not received the same focus. This review describes the cognitive (i.e., executive fun

Infection with intestinal helminth (Hymenolepis diminuta) impacts exploratory behavior and cognitive processes in rats by changing the central level of neurotransmitters.

Parasites may significantly affect the functioning of the host organism including immune response and gut-brain-axis ultimately leading to alteration of the host behavior. The impact of intestinal worms on the host central nervous system (CNS) remains unexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intestinal infection by the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta on behavior and functions of the CNS in rats. The 3 months old animals were infected, and the effects on anxiety, exploration, sensorimotor skills and learning processes were assessed at 18 months in Open Field (OF), Novel Obj

Somatization in patients with predominant diarrhoea irritable bowel syndrome: the role of the intestinal barrier function and integrity.

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is characterised by gastrointestinal (GI) and psychological symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, and somatization). Depression and anxiety, but not somatization, have already been associated with altered intestinal barrier function, increased LPS, and dysbiosis. The study aimed to investigate the possible link between somatization and intestinal barrier in IBS with diarrhoea (IBS-D) patients. METHODS: Forty-seven IBS-D patients were classified as having low somatization (LS = 19) or high somatization (HS = 28) according to the Symptom Checklist-90-Re

A role of noradrenergic receptors in anxiolytic-like effect of high CRF in the rat frontal cortex.

Corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) is a neuropeptide widely distributed in the brain as a hormonal modulator and neurotransmitter. The best known behavioral function of CRF is activation of stress and anxiety via the hypothalamus and limbic structures but the role of CRF in the cortex is still poorly understood. Our previous studies have shown anxiolytic-like effects of high doses of CRF injected into the Fr2 frontal cortex and involvement of CRF1 receptors (R) in that effect. These results seemed to be controversial as most other studies suggested anxiogenic and not anxiolytic effects of CR

Bioactivity-directed isolation, characterization, and quantification of an anxiolytic flavonoid from Brassica oleracea L.

Brassica oleracea L. or Broccoli, is known for its numerous health benefits attributed to the rich array of phytochemicals. Our earlier study showed the hydroalcoholic extract of Broccoli had significant antianxiety activity. The present study involved bioactivity-directed fractionation of the active extract with the aim of separating the constituent responsible for the activity. The bioactive extract was fractionated by column chromatography. The antianxiety activity of the obtained fractions and sub-fractions was evaluated using the elevated plus maze model in mice. It led to the isolation o

Sex-Specific Behavioral Response to Early Adolescent Stress in the Genetically More Stress-Reactive Wistar Kyoto More Immobile, and Its Nearly Isogenic Wistar Kyoto Less Immobile Control Strain.

Genetic predisposition and environmental stress are known etiologies of stress-related psychiatric disorders. Environmental stress during adolescence is assumed to be particularly detrimental for adult affective behaviors. To investigate how genetic stress-reactivity differences modify the effects of stress during adolescence on adult affective behaviors we employed two inbred strains with differing stress reactivity. The Wistar Kyoto More Immobile (WMI) rat strain show increased stress-reactivity and despair-like behaviors as well as passive coping compared to the nearly isogenic control stra

Poor mental health among low-income women in the U.S.: The roles of adverse childhood and adult experiences.

RATIONALE: It is well established that exposure to a greater number of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) increases the risk of poor physical and mental health outcomes. Given the predictive validity of ACE scores and other cumulative risk metrics, a similar measurement approach may advance the study of risk in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: We examined the prevalence and interrelations of 10 adverse adult experiences, including household events such as intimate partner violence and extrafamilial events such as crime victimization. We also tested the relation between cumulative adult adversity and l

Distinct effects of repeated restraint stress on basolateral amygdala neuronal membrane properties in resilient adolescent and adult rats.

Severe and repeated stress has damaging effects on health, including initiation of depression and anxiety. Stress that occurs during development has long-lasting and particularly damaging effects on emotion. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) plays a key role in many affective behaviors, and repeated stress causes different forms of BLA hyperactivity in adolescent and adult rats. However, the mechanism is not known. Furthermore, not every individual is susceptible to the negative consequences of stress. Differences in the effects of stress on the BLA might contribute to determine whether an indivi

Fluoxetine exposure during pregnancy and lactation: Effects on acute stress response and behavior in the novelty-suppressed feeding are age and gender-dependent in rats.

Fluoxetine (FLX) is commonly used to treat anxiety and depressive disorders in pregnant women. Since FLX crosses the placenta and is excreted in milk, maternal treatment with this antidepressant may expose the fetus and neonate to increased levels of serotonin (5-HT). Long-term behavioral abnormalities have been reported in rodents exposed to higher levels of 5-HT during neurodevelopment. In this study we evaluated if maternal exposure to FLX during pregnancy and lactation would result in behavioral and/or stress response disruption in adolescent and adult rats. Our results indicate that expos

Reduced mobility but unaffected startle response in female rats exposed to prenatal dexamethasone: different sides to a phenotype.

An adverse fetal environment is strongly associated with behavioral and emotional development in later life, and environmental interactions with the genome are essential in the development of pathophysiology. This implicates that a genetic vulnerability or other predisposition may interact with the environment and stressful life events to trigger mental disease. The startle reflex is highly sensitive to fear and anxiety in humans and animals. Elevated startle magnitude has been proposed as a marker for neurodevelopmental disorders. We have recently established an animal model for possible deve

Effects of antipsychotics and reference monoaminergic ligands on marble burying behavior in mice.

Antipsychotics constitute efficacious augmenting agents in the treatment of anxiety disorders, including refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder. We examined the effects of 36 compounds, including typical, atypical and novel antipsychotics with dual dopamine D2/5-hydroxytryptamine 1A (D2/5-HT1A) actions on marble burying behavior in mice, a putative preclinical test for anxiety disorders. One hour after drug administration, male NMRI mice were placed individually in cages containing 20 marbles, and the total number of marbles buried after 30 min was counted. The selective serotonin reuptake i

Axis I and II disorders as long-term predictors of mental distress: a six-year prospective follow-up of substance-dependent patients.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of lifetime psychiatric disorders among help-seeking substance abusers has been clearly established. However, the long-term course of psychiatric disorders and mental distress among help-seeking substance abusers is still unclear. The aim of this research was to examine the course of mental distress using a six-year follow-up study of treatment-seeking substance-dependent patients, and to explore whether lifetime Axis I and II disorders measured at admission predict the level of mental distress at follow-up, when age, sex, and substance-use variables measured both
