The presence of antithyroid antibodies in patients with affective and nonaffective psychiatric disorders.

We determined the frequency of antithyroglobulin and antimicrosomal antibodies in 173 consecutively admitted psychiatric inpatients. (We found antithyroid antibodies in 8% (5/65) of patients with DSM-III major depression, 13% (4/31) with biploar disorder, and in 0% (0/4) of those with schizoaffective disorder.) The rate of antibody occurrence was unrelated to lithium exposure either within individual diagnostic categories or for the sample as a whole. The overall frequency of positive antithyroid antibody titers in patients with DSM-III affective disorder, 9% (9/99), did not differ from that i

[Clinical studies on abnormal thyroid stimulators in patients with Graves' disease. I. A sensitive assay for thyroid-stimulating antibodies using cultured porcine thyroid cells and polyethylene glycol precipitation of serum].

The activities of thyroid-stimulating antibody (TSAb) in serum from patients with Graves' disease were measured by a sensitive assay, using cultured porcine thyroid cells and the precipitation from serum with polyethylene glycol (PEG), and the activities were compared with those of thyrotropin binding inhibitor immunoglobulin (TBII), measured by the commercial assay kit. Porcine thyroid cells after digestion were cultured for 15-18 hours with TSH of 1-10,000 microU/ml or the precipitations of sera from normal subjects and patients with Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and then the c

A rare coexistence of Behcet's disease and Graves' thyrotoxicosis in a young man: a case report.

Behcet's disease is a recurrent systemic vasculitic disorder. It manifests most commonly in the form of skin lesions, oral and genital ulcers and uveitis. Graves' thyrotoxicosis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by excessive production of thyroid hormones. We present a case of a 41-year-old male of Turkish descent who had symptoms of arthralgia, rash, palpitations and weight loss. Bloods tests showed raised inflammatory markers and biochemical evidence of severe autoimmune thyrotoxicosis. The patient was HLA-B51-negative, and pathergy test was inconclusive. A diagnosis of Behcet's diseas

Usefulness of PET/CT imaging in systemic IgG4-related sclerosing disease. A report of three cases.

Autoimmune pancreatitis is the pancreatic manifestation of a novel clinicopathological disorder called systemic IgG4-related sclerosing disease. Beside the pancreas, this entity affects other sites (salivary glands, orbit, lung, thyroid, gallbladder, biliary tree system, kidney, abdominal aorta, retroperitoneum, prostate, and lymph node) by infiltration with IgG4-positive plasma cells. Several case reports and small case series have demonstrated the utility of integrated positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in monitoring therapy and documenting relapse and flare-up of auto

Telangiectasia as a presenting sign of Graves' disease.

Acquired nevoid telangiectasia (ANT) is observed in several conditions including primary cutaneous disorders, systemic autoimmune disease and hyperestrogenism occurring in puberty, pregnancy and chronic liver disease. We describe a patient in whom ANT was a presenting sign of autoimmune hyperthyroidism, which improved after thyroidectomy. A 43-year-old Caucasian woman experienced an asymptomatic development of multiple widespread red skin lesions, diagnosed to be ANT. Blood tests revealed increased serum levels of free tri-iodothyronine and thyroxine and suppressed thyroid-stimulating hormone.

Suplatast tosilate (IPD), a new immunoregulator, is effective in vitiligo treatment.

The major type of vitiligo is considered to be an autoimmune disorder. Anti-melanocyte antibodies are frequently detected in sera of patients with this disease. Interleukin (IL)-4 released from Th2 cells is an important factor in stimulating autoantibody production by B-cells. In this study, seven patients with vitiligo treated with suplatast tosilate (IPD), three showed repigmentation and improvement of their lesions after administration of the drug. IPD halted the continuous spread of the lesions in three of the other patients, and, in two of them, also reduced microsome test and thyroid tes

Urinary iodine excretion and serum thyroid function in adults after iodinated contrast administration.

BACKGROUND: Iodinated contrast media (ICM) is a source of excess iodine that may induce thyroid dysfunction. A prospective cohort study was conducted to assess the effects of ICM on urinary iodine clearance and serum thyroid function tests (TFTs) in adults. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study of 54 adults undergoing elective computed tomography (CT) scans at an academic medical center, serial urinary iodine concentrations (UIC) and serum TFTs were obtained until UIC normalized following ICM administration. Thyroid volume/nodularity were assessed by ultrasound. Associations between covar

Immune Dysregulation in Pediatric Common Variable Immunodeficiency: Implications for the Diagnostic Approach.

Infections and infectious complications are hallmarks of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) and the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in affected patients at any age. However, the pediatric CVID is no longer perceived as a primary immunodeficiency associated solely with infectious manifestations; autoimmune, allergic, lymphoproliferative, and malignant disorders and organ-specific immunopathology also characterize the spectrum of non-infectious complications. In this study, we sought to determine the role of immune dysregulation and frequency of non-infectious sequelae in children

Who Cares More About the Environment, Those with an Intrinsic, an Extrinsic, a Quest, or an Atheistic Religious Orientation?: Investigating the Effect of Religious Ad Appeals on Attitudes Toward the Environment.

Allergen immunotherapy (AIT), or specific immunotherapy (SIT), is an effective treatment for inducing immune tolerance to specific allergens. It is widely used for allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma, and Hymenoptera venom allergies, with recent applications to food allergies and atopic dermatitis. Despite its benefits, the use of SIT in patients with autoimmune diseases is controversial due to concerns about its potential to induce or exacerbate autoimmune conditions. This report examines a case of autoimmune hypothyroidism developing during AIT and the management decisions involved. A

Characteristics of primary biliary cirrhosis in British Columbia's First Nations population.

UNLABELLED: Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a rare, autoimmune liver disorder characterized by progressive destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts, that results in portal inflammation, scarring, cirrhosis and, eventually, liver failure. Although considered rare in Canadian populations, it is the leading indication for referral for liver transplantation in British Columbia's First Nations population. Previously, an expanded review of all cases referred to the British Columbia Transplant Society for PBC was carried out comparing the demographics of those of First Nations descent with those not

Hepatitis C virus infection and autoimmunity.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection has been associated with a plethora of immune and autoimmune perturbations. We review serological and clinical autoimmune manifestations associated with HCV infection, discuss treatment regimens for HCV-related autoimmune diseases, and present a framework for understanding HCV-associated autoimmune disease by performing a computerized literature search from which representative articles were used and referenced. The immune response to HCV may include the development of cryoglobulins, rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anticardiolipin, antithyroid

Dysgeusia limited to sweet taste in myasthenia gravis.

Total dysgeusia, an inability to interpret all of the basic tastes, often occurs with zinc deficiency. Partial dysgeusia (dissociation dysgeusia) is a rare inability to interpret a limited number of these basic tastes. We present the case of a patient with myasthenia gravis who became unable to discern sweet taste, but other basic tastes were unaffected. Such dysgeusia can be explained by obstruction of selective taste receptors in taste cells. We considered that this symptom was induced by an autoimmune mechanism related to myasthenia gravis.

Pathophysiological lessons from rare associations of immunological disorders.

Rare associations of immunological disorders can often tell more than mice and rats about the pathogenesis of immunologically mediated human kidney disease. Cases of glomerular disease with thyroiditis and Graves' disease and of minimal change disease with lymphoepithelioma-like thymic carcinoma and lymphomatoid papulosis were recently reported in Pediatric Nephrology. These rare associations can contribute to the unraveling of the pathogenesis of membranous nephropathy (MN) and minimal change disease (MCD) and lead to the testing of novel research hypotheses. In MN, the target antigen may be

[Plasma and tissue levels of cytokines and adhesive molecules in patients before strumectomy].

From a group of 134 patients with complete documentation before goitrectomy the authors selected 10 histologically defined cases of (A) simple colloid nodular goitre, (B) toxic parenchymatous goitre type GB and (C) autoimmune thyroiditis. Marked hormonal suppression was achieved in group B by thyrostatic therapy, as compared with A and C, the autoantibody titres (TGAb and TMAb) differentiated the groups. The authors examined the interleukin 6 concentrations and those of its soluble receptor (IL-6, IL-6R), of the tumour necrotizing factor alpha (TNF-alpha) interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and of ad

Acquired von Willebrand's disease: a rare manifestation of postpartum thyroiditis.

This report describes the diagnosis of acquired type I von Willebrand disease in a 30-year-old woman (G5P5) who presented with complaints of excessive bleeding in the postpartum period. The patient's additional complaints of fatigue, depression, and inability to lose weight resulted in laboratory testing that indicated hypothyroidism due to thyroiditis. Clinical symptoms and laboratory tests for von Willebrand disease and hypothyroidism normalized with L-thyroxine replacement. Thyroiditis resulting in symptomatic hypothyroidism occurs in 2-4 per cent of postpartum women. The possibility of und
