Relevance of Cone-beam computed tomography on diagnosis and surgical planning of the cementoblastoma.

The cementoblastoma is a rare odontogenic tumor occurring in the mandibular molar and premolar of the patients in the second and third decades of life. Despite its typical benign behavior, this tumor may promote local destruction by perforating the cortical bone and displacing the mandibular canal. This case report shows a 31-year-old man with an aggressive cementoblastoma attached to the apex of the mandibular first molar. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a hyperdense mass connected to the root of mandibular molar surrounded by a hypodense area. Multiplanar reconstructions showed ruptur…

Repeatability of Weightbearing Computed Tomography Measurement of First Metatarsal Alignment and Rotation.

BACKGROUND: Weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT) can be used to assess alignment and rotation of the first metatarsal. It is unknown whether these measures remain consistent on sequential WBCTs in the same patient when a patient's standing position may be different. The aim of this study was to establish the repeatability (test-retest) of measurements of first metatarsal alignment and rotation in patients without forefoot pathology on WBCT. METHODS: We retrospectively identified 42 feet in 26 patients with sequential WBCT studies less than 12 months apart. Patients with surgery between sc…

The Usefulness of Preoperative Evaluation for Intractable Slow Transit Constipation by Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVES: Total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis is the gold standard surgical procedure for patients with slow transit constipation (STC). This operation's outcomes are highly variable; however, predictors of postoperative outcomes after surgical treatment of intractable STC remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the usefulness of preoperative evaluation for intractable STC by computed tomography (CT) in predicting postoperative outcomes. METHODS: From January 2011 to December 2018, 22 patients with intractable STC underwent laparoscopic total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosi…

Visibility of microvessels in Optical Coherence Tomography angiography depends on angular orientation.

Optical Coherence Tomography angiography (OCTA) is a widespread tool for depth-resolved imaging of chorioretinal vasculature with single microvessel resolution. To improve the clinical interpretation of OCTA, the conditions affecting visualization of microvessels must be defined. Here we inject a scattering plasma tracer (Intralipid) during OCTA imaging of the anesthetized rat eye. In the retina, we find that interlaminar (vertical) vessels that connect laminae have one-fourth to one-third the OCTA red blood cell to tracer (RBC-to-tracer) signal ratio of intralaminar (horizontal) vessels. This…

Postmortem Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging of an Abdominal Gunshot Wound.

The use of postmortem computed tomography (CT) has been described in many articles concerning gunshot injuries. Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for better assessment of soft tissue injuries has also been mentioned in the literature, albeit much less often. The use of postmortem MRI for abdominal gunshot wounds has not been previously presented in the literature. The present case report describes the findings of an abdominal gunshot wound detected by postmortem CT and MRI, followed by an autopsy. The main imaging findings on CT were a hyperdense ring at the entrance wound, which ind…

Postmortem Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Gunshot Wounds to the Neck.

Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is rarely used for the radiologic assessment of gunshot injuries, although it has clear advantages over postmortem computed tomography (CT) with regard to the imaging of soft tissue injuries. Another benefit in using MRI is that lodged projectiles composed of nonferromagnetic material such as lead present only marginal metal artifacts compared with severe artifacts on CT. This case report presents CT and MRI findings in a case with two gunshot wounds to the neck: a perforating wound and a nonperforating wound with a lead bullet lodged in the cervical…

Weight-Adjusted Contrast Administration in the Computed Tomography Evaluation of Pulmonary Embolism.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography pulmonary angiogram (CTPA) is widely considered the gold standard for diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) with previous studies demonstrating high sensitivity and specificity. Despite this, nondiagnostic and indeterminate CTPA rates of 5%-26% remain a concern. As part of a continuing quality assurance program, a new weight-adjusted contrast dose and increased administration rate CTPA protocol was studied with an aim to improve diagnostic accuracy of PE evaluation. METHODS: A total of 2,398 CTPA examinations were reviewed to assess pulmonary arterial enhancem…
